1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 June 2017 June 2017 Summertime! I can t quite believe we are already wrapping up the year. It s been a whirlwind, but it has all been fun and I m looking forward to celebrating the year with you at the June potluck meeting. It will be a great meeting with lots of good food, all the postcard challenge entries to view, a used book sale and the election of our new board. And of course we ll do sharing, too! I ve been busy putting the finishing touches on a couple of postcards, and look forward to seeing what you all have created, too. I hope you have had fun with the challenge and encourage you to enter your postcards in the San Diego Quilt Show in September. You can see the details on how to enter at What are your summer plans? Are you traveling? Taking quilting classes? Traveling in order to take a quilting class? Don t forget we ll have sit and sews in July and August, which are always a lot of fun. If the weather is hot, the room at the library is air conditioned, and you can work alongside your friends. See you at the meeting! Jennifer Williams

Please return any books you may have out so that we can do inventory over the summer. Many people have donated books and we will book through and possibly weed out books from the library for books to sell. Even old books may have nice pictures or an idea for a technique you might not know. Come and support your guild by checking out the book sale. Proceeds will go back into the general guild treasury. I will try to get an updated list of our books by the end of the summer to start the new year fresh. For any questions, feel free to me. Thanks for the ongoing support! Peggy pcastor@ucsd.edu

3 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 3 June 2017 Programs Preview! Preview! On September 8th, our guest speaker is Barbara Shephard. In 20 plus years of passionate quilting, Barbara had produced many quilts, blending old needlework and traditional quilting patterns with modern fabrics and unique styles. With a mother who exhibited a quilt in the first Sister s Quilt Show 42 years ago and two sisters who are equally passionate about quilting, Barbara has a background that nourished her quilting creativity. Many of her quilts are embellished with crocheted and embroidered handwork acquired from antique shops. She has taken classes from Kaffe Fassett and admired his work and fabrics; and with friends and quilting companions has made many Kaffe quilts, all colorful and beautiful. She has spent many years doing hand applique and has some lovely hand appliqued quilts to show. More recently, she has made some quilts featuring applique with wool. You may have seen her at Rosie s where she has been teaching classes in applique and wool work. Barbara is looking forward to sharing the joy of quilting with our guild. On November 11, our guest speaker is Mickey Depre. Mickey s quilts have been described as whirlwinds of color, with oranges residing next to purples of all shades in harmony. Dots, swirls, and stripes intermingle with florals and prints in an outlandish yet exciting visual parade. Her work mixes traditional quilting techniques with bold, innovative machine applique and thread work. Fabric choices include her own hand dyed cotton with commercial cottons for a special spark of color and depth. WORKSHOP: Mickey Depre Half-Scrap Quilts Sunday, November 12 at Paradise Sewing in Poway Poway Road, Poway ( ) Half-Scrap Quilts is the title of her workshop. Check out her website ( ). More detailed information regarding the project, price, and supplies should be available at the May guild meeting along with a sign-up sheet for the workshop. On January 13, our guest speaker is Becky McDaniel. Betty and I recently met Becky at the SCCQG Meet the Teachers. She had an impressive booth showing off her quilts and a unique applique technique. Check out Becky s website ( ) and look for her Orange Peel Pillow. Linda Pountney

4 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 4 June 2017 Village Quilters Program Survey We are planning Programs for the next couple of years and would like to get your input on what you would like for lectures and workshops. Offering programs to draw current and prospective members will help our guild to grow. Between September and June, we usually plan on a total of six speakers which includes four workshops. 1. On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest level of interest, how interested are you in a program by a professional organizer on how to organize your sewing room? 2. Which of these topics are you most interested in learning about through a lecture and / or workshop? Traditional piecing Traditional blocks made with modern fabrics Modern quilting Paper piecing Art quilts Strip piecing Applique Embellishments and other surface design Wool felting Special effects with color Antique quilts Foundation piecing Machine quilting Thread painting with a machine 3. Would it be possible to include the link below in your next e-newsletter or group ? Video Recap on YouTube: We will also be taking pictures of the kids receiving the quilts this summer, and I will update you with those as well. God Bless! The numbers are amazing from September 2016 through May Mary Lewis has made 221 bibs since September We have made and given 57 quilts to Gently Hugged, 93 premie quilts to Kaiser Special Care and 37 quilts to hidden Valley House. Our Knitters and crocheters had made and given 140 caps/hats to Kaiser Special Care and Gentle Hugged. We made and gave 18 quilts to Alandale Camp in Idyllwild for the abused children and camp-goers. You all continue to amaze me with your talents and generosity. THANK YOU, THANK YOU. 7 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 7 June 2017 And the Christmas sewing continues!!! Special thank you to Peggy Kollars, Annie Mitchell, and Tammie Kallen for turning in their Christmas boutique items. And thanks to Tammie and Jeanette De La Torre for taking additional items to complete. (Sorry if I ve missed anyone.) We are still really loaded with kits, so please help us continue to complete these items. As you know, the venue of the Olde Fashioned Christmas Boutique is being relocated, so we are researching other places to sell our wonderful quilted items. If you have any suggestions or know of upcoming craft shows, please let us know. Together we can continue selling our beautiful things, but we all need to work together. Do you remember when we tried an Opportunity Quilt one year? It was lots of work for only a few people and we didn t make as much money as we do with outright selling. We ve done an auction in the past and that sure was a lot of work too...for a one-day event. We will keep you posted when we know what the future holds. In the meantime, THANK YOU for your generous support. Penny Bamford and Darlene Piche WAYS & MEANS Membership will be accepting 2018 dues payments at the June potluck and at the July and August Sit & Sews. Peggy

8 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 8 June 2017 Hospitality Come one, come all to enjoy our state-of-the-summer potluck. The Hospitality Team has table decorations planned that you won t want to miss! Please bring a dish corresponding to the first letter in your last name so that we will have a good variety. A E F K L R S Z Dessert Salad Main Dish Appetizer See you soon! Maggie Forys and Nancy Laursen Hospitality Co-Chairs Reminder: Village Quilters 2017 Spring Challenge: Postcards! The idea for this challenge comes from the San Diego Quilt Show in September, where the theme and challenge is Postcards from San Diego. Making postcards is quick and easy, and meant to be creative and fun. I m hoping that this guild challenge will inspire some of you to enter your creations in the Quilt Show! Postcards must be 5 X 7 and made out of fabric. Other details -- the batting, quilting, binding is entirely the creator s choice. Just like a real postcard, one side should have the image, the other side an address and short message. You can use fabric paint or pens for this or print something onto fabric. Postcards are due at our last meeting on June 10th. We will display them and perhaps vote for our favorite. Most important of all, though, have fun!
