1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 May 2013 May 2013 I am indoors today with little incentive to look outside. Rain is coming and the birds are napping. This is the best weather to sip tea and quilt or read. I am making two quilts at the same time. Not unusual, you say, but I am using fabric from a big bag of red, white and black scraps. I am sewing green. I only keep a few bags of scraps, which I organize according to color (red, white and black), batiks and some small bags of Brights. When you have a large stash, scraps aren t in demand but the frugality of quilting makes it a given that we save smaller pieces for a future project. That may never come and we are faced with an ever growing supply of these small slices of color. These gems are my go to fabrics for charity quilts and even some gift giving. It is relaxing to do some mindless sewing now and then. I have other projects of course but they require a lot more concentration than I have today and this week. The news has been pervasive with national stories leading on our local news and the local stories finding there way onto the national and international programs. We have become less isolated and insular now with all of the electronic media propelling these stories into our homes... The bombing was in my home town. The results were horrific. I worked in Copley Square at an advertising agency when I was a freshman in college. I lived on Commonwealth Avenue after I graduated. Now you will all know about Dorchester where I grew up. The youngest victim was from there. It was all too real and disturbing that this could happen to my hometown. I used to ride the subway by myself when I was in high school. I lived in the city in a safe neighborhood. I played with the kids up the street, walked to school every day with friends. We all attended the same churches. We shopped the same stores and knew each other by sight if not by name. We did not move around much in those days. There was a sense of stability. Parents and grandparents shared the same streets if not the same homes. It took a village to keep an eye on us as we moved around on the cul de sac to play. We kept a look out for strangers before there was a neighborhood watch. Since we lived down the street from the subway station we knew the regulars that went to and from work each day and the Sunday visitors that came each week. Public transportation was good into the city and you could go anywhere with it. We were a group of immigrants with as many languages as there were streets. We blended together with all of the prejudices and friction that there was in those days. We were peaceful. We were grateful for the opportunities that were given to us. Simple things like owning property and cars. Higher education for our children. Much the same as it is today. We all have stories that are similar to mine I look at the events of the past week and know that my home town will never be the same. My time of innocence is lost. I don t have any answers or solutions to the problem of this new violence. We need to talk. More laws are not the answer. We have way too many and it is getting harder to enforce all of those. Common sense was the basis of behavior years ago. It was taught to us by our parents and grandparents. The Golden Rule was the byword. What ever happened to these simple precepts? Please join us for a fun meeting with friends old and new. Bring a smile, bring a quilt and bring a friend. Diana

9 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 9 May 2013 Village Store The Village Store will be up and running in May. Our offerings will be FABRICS! Please stop by the table. Deb Community Requests Mr. Gary Stathas of Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley asks if anyone has sewing machines to donate to the school. The school has a new Fashion Class. They are looking for donated machines - the school cannot afford to buy machines. It would be extremely helpful if folks could donate machines for the class. The sewing machine doesn't have to be new - it just has to be in working condition. If you or anyone you know has a machine they are willing to donate, please call Mr. Stathas at or him at: gstathas@schscougars.org Additionally, Boston Modern Quilt Guild wants to make charity quilts for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. They are asking for donations of BLOCKS, to be received by May 24, If you are interested, you can find more information at: Block of the Month Hello quilters, May will be our last month for Block of the Month. The blocks will be provided by Karen Kluwin. We have had some creative and beautiful blocks this year and I am sure next year will be equally as great. Please be sure to sign up for a month for next year. We will have the signup sheet at the table. If you have never provided Block of the Month blocks please consider it for next year. It is fun and not difficult and Jill and I can help you through it. If you have been one of the winners this year we are looking forward to seeing your completed quilt shared with everyone next year. I will not be at the meeting in May as we will be visiting our daughter and family in Boston but I will see all of you at the pot luck in June. Questions?
