1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 November 2012 Dear VQers, I hope that you are enjoying our fall, well, our San Diego fall anyway which I know for those of you from other parts of the country isn't much of a seasonal change. When I was in Boston in early October I got my fill of leaves turning glorious colors. I took so many photographs of trees that at one point my husband photographed me photographing trees. It was a hilarious photo. The trees back east reminded me of a autumn-themed quilt I made as a wedding present for one of my step-sons a few years ago. I loved that quilt not just for the colors but because it was the first quilt I designed on my own. Speaking of gifts I hope that many of you will visit our booth at the Olde Fashioned Christmas Boutique, our big fundraiser. Please mark your calendars. This year it takes place on Fri, Nov 30th 2p-4p, Sat, Dec 1st 10a-4p and Sun, Dec 2 10a-2p. If you haven't been before the boutique is in a private home located at Charbono Point in Scripps Ranch. If you need directions the phone number at the home is Please come out and support the many VQ volunteers who worked on items to sell and are working in our booth. Every year I find a mind boggling array of wonderful gifts for friends and family. In fact one year I completed all my holiday shopping at the boutique. Not only are the gifts beautiful and well-made but very unique. As we come into the holiday season I know that many of you will be busy with various festivities, chores and cooking but I do hope that you find time to sew. For me the simple act of sewing whether it is cutting out fabric, piecing, sewing on a binding or hand-quilting is such a soothing and relaxing experience that it seems to magically bring down my stress levels. Helps me focus and appreciate the gifts around me. Plus my cat Rachel loves it when I have a quilt in my lap for slip-stitching the binding or hand-quilting. She doesn't understand how difficult it is to sew with her planted squarely on top of the quilt but it is every cat's greatest fondness to snuggle on a quilt so how can I deny her? Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish all of you and safe and delicious Thanksgiving. Enjoy the holiday and especially your loved ones. Quiltingly Yours, Jeffree

Make your quilt as you normally would. Make a sleeve and baste it on to the back of your quilt using large stitches and two strands of a heavy thread (quilting weight, maybe). After the quilt show, the large stitches will make the sleeve easy to remove. Then save the sleeve to use on another quilt in a future quilt show!

7 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 7 November 2012 Ways and Means BRING YOUR CHRISTMAS BOUTIQUE ITEMS Thanks so much to all the gracious folks who have offered to help me with Ways & Means during my recovery, as well as all the generous folks who worked on the Boutique items and those who donated Christmas fabrics! One more month to finalize the last details! We will be passing around a Sign-Up Sheet to help monitor the Christmas Boutique 2 hour timeslots. Mostly we want to be there to answer any questions. In my post-surgical absence this month, here s who will help with the Boutique: Diane Troncale will manage the Ways & Means table at the November guild meeting, collecting sale items and taking them to Annie Mitchell's house. Diane will also pass around the sign-up sheet for the Christmas Boutique monitors. Diana Foster and Sandra Walker will measure, tag, and price the final influx of inventory in late November. Jeanie Braheme, Annie Mitchell, and Carol Shull will be responsible for collecting a portion of the inventory and setting up the Christmas Boutique display. Annie Mitchell has volunteered to "re-load" the Christmas boutique on Friday and Saturday nights. What would we do without you, Annie! Lynnell Hallock and Annie Mitchell will take down the display after 3pm Sunday afternoon and return auction items to Annie's and the racks to the next guild meeting. Please offer your assistance to Annie Mitchell or add your name to the Monitor sign-up sheet. Diane DeWeese will pick-up and take the unsold items to the DECEMBER guild meeting. Annie Mitchell and Kathy Greene will manage an auction of the unsold items as part of our December guild meeting. With any luck, I will see you at the Christmas potluck. Many thanks from Darlene and the Christmas Elves! Here s a Tip: Need a large or odd-sized hexagon? Do you have a way to cut a circle with the width of the hexagon you want? If so, the cut the circle out of paper. Then, fold the circle in half and in half again to make a center point. Open the circle completely and pull one of the fold-crease edges to the center and crease the bottom across. Now, take the point to the left you created and pull it to the center and crease... continue until you have all six points. It does it by itself! Try it with any circle, and then do this with large paper or just with the fabrics, and then cut straight lines between the point ends after you reopen the circle. 9 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 9 November 2012 Block of the Month Our Block of the Month schedule is as follows: November Darlene Piche December Holiday Potluck---no block January Rene Robinette February Karen Kluwin March Hope Campbell April - Betty Molnar May Bib Medina / Bea Davis In case you re wondering how BOM works -- each month someone signs up to bring quilt block kits. I signed up to do October s BOM! I got to decide on the block pattern, color, size, number of kits, & if I wanted to get half of the completed blocks back. (I did not want ½ back, so I made the lesser amount of blocks so WINNER TAKES ALL. The minimum number of block kits is (enough blocks to make a good size lap quilt). If the person bringing the quilt blocks wants to get her half back, then she will double the number of & staple 2 block kits together. Please bring a sample of the finished block that we can put up for display. Kits are sold to members for $2 each. Members take their kits home & sew the blocks together in time to return their finished quilt blocks to the next month s guild meeting. A winning name is drawn at the next guild meeting. Remember to put your name & ph# with your finished block so your name can be in the drawing to win. Enter 1 name per each $2 block kit purchased. (Many times the contributor chooses to get her ½ depending on how many blocks were made. Some of the ladies don t want any back, so it is winner takes all.) *Just a reminder to the ladies that make the block kits, if you only make enough for the winner and don t want any back, you only have to make single kits, and make as many as you want. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to call or or me (or Lynnell)! We have some recycled baggies for kits, & also the papers to put in the kits for people to use for the drawing (for their name & ph#). We are looking forward to the BOM blocks this year! If you have any suggestions on how to improve our BOM Program, we d love to hear it. See you on the 10th of November!!! Can t wait to see what all of the completed Whirly-Gig BOM blocks turned out like that I made up in white on white paisley with pastel batiks! Jill Elhard jbelhard@gmail.com ph# (before 8pm) Lynnell Hallock lynnell@san.rr.com ph# Library It was nice to see everyone at last months meeting. A big Thank You to all who brought in their old magazines and books. Please keep them coming! There are a few books that have been checked out for a while now. This is just a friendly reminder to turn in your checked out books in a relatively timely manner so that others can enjoy them. See you in November. Kim Stevenson

We ll share your creations in our December VQ Newsletter. KGreene001@san.rr.com Quilting Trivia: Quilting can be traced back to ancient Egypt and China where three layers of fabrics (top, batting for warmth, and backing) were stitched together to keep the middle layer from slipping and clumping. Later in the 11th century, quilting was used to hold together the layers of padding under armor. From then on quilting was a common form of needle work. In the 18th century, it was stylish for English women to wear quilted petticoats and underskirts and for men to wear quilted waistcoats. Quilted bedding was also popular. Quilts were first brought to the American Colonies during this century. A Fabric Designer In Our Midst? For those of you who want to see what Rene Robinette has been designing and/or want to order some fabric, wall paper or wall decals, check out this site: Notes: Ballerina Bars was designed as a wall decal. It prints a 30X30 design that can be mounted as one decal or split into two (15 HX30 W) decals. If you were decorating a girls room with the ballerina decals, you can use the Ballerinas fabric to make, for example, curtains, dust ruffles, quilts or pillows. My Playday Panels works well with Little Robinettes Kids to create a quilt story called My Playday. This panel comes with instructions, a sample layout (suitable for a doll blanket) and a label. All these designs can be printed on fabric, wallpaper, or as wall decals. My suggestion when ordering fabric is to order the Kona Cotton. Stay tuned, there are more fabric designs in the works.
