September 2015 I don t remember who it was or when she spoke up, and for the life of me I can t imagine why she said it, but I distinctly recall that one member of our guild asked for a president s challenge this year. As I understand this particular form of torture, it involves a quilt guild president throwing down a gauntlet (although in this case a seam ripper would be more appropriate) by challenging quilters to make a quilt according to certain specifications. Some presidents ask for quilts of a certain color or specify a particular fabric. Others hope their members will experiment with a new technique or interpret a stated theme. I admit I was more than a mite surprised to hear this request. For me, day-to-day living presents enough little challenges to keep me baffled, flummoxed and discombobulated much of the time, especially now that we ve added a lively puppy to our household. As for quilting, isn t it enough to try to get seams to match, points to keep their pointiness and quilting stitches to avoid veering off in unplanned, jagged paths? But if it s a challenge that s called for, a challenge you ll get. I m refining the requirements and specifications now, and if I don t fall victim to carpal tunnel syndrome from writing all the rules, I aim to present them at the September meeting to give people plenty of time to sew and rip and sew again to finish these projects before the big unveiling at our June potluck. If you re not the person who asked for this, don t worry. This project is strictly optional, and I won t be dreaming up anything I wouldn t want to tackle myself. (Full disclosure, though: I m not averse to that often-dreaded A-word technique appliqué or even paper piecing, although the latter really does test my below -average spatial relationship skills). I look forward to welcoming members back and greeting visitors at the first meeting of our year to hear from local quilt teacher Betty Alofs. It promises to be an exciting year, with a full calendar of programs and tempting projects and opportunities, not to mention snacks and potlucks. And if things in your life are too boring and predictable, rest assured. You ll have a chance to take on at least one new challenge as a quilter this year. Children s Quilts any size. *All our charities also love burp cloths, bibs and booties * POTHOLDER CHALLENGE Our potholder challenge starts at our September meeting. I have made 25kits with 3 pieces of challenge fabric, 2 pieces of batting and 1 piece of Insul-Brite. Rules are make a potholder of any size of your choice using the challenge fabric and what ever other fabrics you want to add. The big reveal is in December. There will be a prize for the prettiest or/most unique. You can keep this potholder for yourself, give it to the boutique committee or gift it away, up to you. 6 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 6 September 2015 September Program Featuring Betty Alofs - Lecture title is "My Quilting Journey" Betty began making crafts and sewing as a young girl, and continued with sewing garments and home decorator items throughout the years. She began quilting in 1989 and took early retirement from her job as Administrative Assistant/Technical Editor in 1997 to quilt full time.. The reason for the early retirement was to work in a friend's quilt shop, where she learned more and more and began teaching classes. After creating a series of pictorial quilts, she established her own company to market the patterns for these pictorials in She continues to teach and design patterns, and currently provides workshops and presentations to quilt and sewing organizations. Ways and Means The Christmas boutique fund raiser will be here before we know it (the 2nd weekend in November this year... it happens to conflict with our guild meeting) We have a great collection of items thanks to Diana's hard work last year and to many guild members who have sewed up a storm this year! Please stop by our table at the September meeting. We have table runner kits and snap bag kits. Also, a few items that need binding, quilting, etc. In addition, we have a couple of Christmas panels that need to be whipped up into something irresistible...placemats or a lap sized quilt perhaps. We did succeed in finding Minion fabric! A big coup as Rosie's and many of the websites keep selling out. If anyone is interested in making a child sized quilt, we have a minion panel and coordinating minion fabric. This would be a quick and easy project. There should also be enough fabric for a few pillowcases. Very cute fabric! We would like to have most items completed by the end of October so we have time to price and organize everything. Thank you, Eleanor Diane Recipes Fruit Crisp (recipe from Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book) I added 50 percent to this recipe to make an Apple Crisp for the June potluck - Carol Goodhue Shull - 5 cups sliced apples (or pears, peaches, apricots or thawed frozen fruit) 2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar ½ cup regular rolled oats ½ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ginger, or cinnamon (I think I used ginger) ¼ cup butter or margarine ¼ cup chopped nuts or coconut (I used coconut) Place fruit in a 2-quart square baking dish. Stir in the granulated sugar. For topping, in a medium bowl combine the oats, brown sugar, flour and nutmeg. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the nuts. Sprinkle topping over fruit. Bake in a 375-degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes (40 minutes for thawed fruit) or until fruit is tender and topping is golden. If desired, serve warm with ice cream.
