If you have a holiday table decoration you d like to share as well, please do so. See you at the meeting! Hope Campbell (Quilting4Hope@aol.com) and Kim Stevenson It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of a fellow guild member, Lorreta Harry. Loretta passed away November 8, 2009, in her home. Her battle with cancer was just too much for her to overcome.

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 4 November 2009 Ways and Means Thank you everyone who contributed to the Christmas Boutique this year. Hopefully by the time you are reading this column, the sale is over and we have a hefty amount of money earned to add to our Village treasure. We have 35 beautiful table runners made by many VQ members. Christmas stockings and Christmas Napkins are unique this year. So many wonderful elves put in a lot of time working on projects for the Boutique. A big thank you to all but a special thanks to Linda Pountney, Mary Lewis, Suzy Marshall, Jan Kolarov. Jan Halldorson, Karen Kluwin, Andrea Keskey, Deb McManus, Diana Foster, Rene Robinette, and Sharon Ainsworth who contributed many hours and many, many items. We are planning an Opportunity Auction again this year at our Christmas meeting along with possibly a small sale of items that did not sell at the Boutique. 10 to 15 stations will be set up around the perimeter of the room with lots of great surprises. You will not be able to resist placing a ticket in the paper sack next to the item and then your name could be drawn from this sack and you are the winner of this great item. Tickets will be sold at the meeting for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Bring a potluck item and a guest, if you like, and enjoy our Christmas Party. No charge for guests at the Christmas party. Also if you want a head start on your tickets bring those wonderful address labels to place on the back of your ticket, so you don't have to write your name 60 times. I think I have plenty of quilts and items for this Auction so come and enjoy. Anna Mitchell amitchel@san.rr.com Membership Membership wishes everyone a joyous holiday season and a wonderful Marilyn & Cheri Classifieds and Websites Classifieds: Sell, give away or get items from your fellow guild members. All items must be related to quilting and will be published just one time. Perhaps you have a sewing machine you would like to sell; or you re looking for a special ruler or book. Websites: Share sites that you find yourself visiting over and over again. Submit classifieds (with your contact information) and favorite websites to Rene Robinette at robinette@san.rr.com

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 6 November 2009 Block of the Month Well ladies, we are officially on the big holiday countdown. We ve had a great turnout for block o f the month, so far. Both the blocks were well received, and much drooled over. We want to back up a bit and let you all know that the September block was the Disappearing Nine Patch, contributed by Dorothy Stout and won by Sharon Ainsworth. Sorry I overlooked that in last month s article. October s block Fall Leaf Block - was contributed by Betty Molnar & BJ Steitz and won by Janice Rudgers. Lucky gal! We were all sure our name would be drawn!! The November block Holiday Four Patch & Friends was contributed by Janet Beyea. The fabrics are quite colorful and the block was easy to put together. How many of you have your fingers crossed that you ll win at the December meeting? There is no block for the December meeting, as it s our holiday potluck. But be sure to get ready for Diane Hart s block at the January meeting. Her block was adorable last year, and sure to be just as wonderful. Contributors for the next few months are: February Jan Kalorov & Annie Mitchell March Gail Tauscher April Sharon Ainsworth May still available See you at the potluck! Karen Kluwin Doris Hargrove karenkluwin@msn.com Happy Birthday to the following members: Antoinette Corum Dec 07 Darlene Piche Dec 07 Margaret Cording Dec 15

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 7 November 2009 Quilt Book Adventures The VQ Library WHERE IS THE LIBRARY? As many of you know, we were requested by the Scripps Ranch Library to remove our boxes from under the stage in preparation for some work there. We have no date when this will be completed. I m hoping for some Library activity each month, but on a smaller scale, until that issue resolves itself. I WILL have books for lending in January, along with the sale of some books. EXTREME MAKEOVER - LIBRARY EDITION: Thanks to Kathy Greene, Sandra Walker, and Suzy Marshall who offered to join me and comprised the committee to review the books and make decisions. We spent an entire Saturday morning evaluating every single book. The result was that we deleted books prior to 2005 along with more recent books that haven t been borrowed from the library in a very long time. The withdrawn books were evaluated on sale worthiness and the best of the lot is being offered to you. The oldest and least interesting books were donated to the Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa libraries equally. OUR GOAL: Our goal is to keep no more than 100 books and those no older than five years. The exception will be any older book of basic techniques that is still being borrowed. One of the things we discovered, as we sorted through the books -- we found books that we didn t know we had! Too many choices diluted the quality of our collection. Also, we plan to provide a small sampling of rulers and templates, along with any associated book, that will be beneficial to the group. Recommendations are appreciated. WHAT S NEW IN THE LIBRARY? Hours and hours of studying have gone into the selection of books. If there is anywhere on the Internet that I can see what s inside a book, I ll find it and I ve spent time at Rosie s looking at every book she s got there! That was a fun afternoon. Here are a few new books: StrataVarious Quilts: 9 Fabulous Strip Quilts from Fat Quarters Beautiful quilts from strips! Material Obsession: Modern Quilts with Traditional Roots This book helps you use fabric-youlove to make quilts-you-love! A New Light on Storm at Sea Quilts: One Block-An Ocean of Design Possibilities Wendy Mathson s book to accompany Kathy Green s donation of the Storm at Sea templates. Thanks, Kathy! Loose Change: Quilts from Nickels, Dimes, and Fat Quarters From large quilts to table runners, this book will help you use scraps.

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 8 November 2009 Experts Guide to Foundation Piecing: 15 Techniques & Projects from Barbara Baker, Carol Doak, Cynthia England, Caryl Bryer Learn techniques from all the foundation piecing experts. Flying Geese & More by Kay Wood Although this is an older book, it goes with the Flying Geese template that was requested. Make those geese fast and easy! Fearless Design for Every Quilter: Traditional and Contemporary 10 Lessons Creativity & Critique For stretching yourself creatively. More books to come. CAN I STILL DONATE BOOKS TO THE LIBRARY? HOW ABOUT TEMPLATES & RULERS? Yes, you definitely can as long as they are no older than (Thank you.) Books that are will be sold; more current books may be added to the library. If you have acrylic templates that you don t think you will use again, we d be happy to add them to the library. If we find they are not being borrowed, we will sell them to buy what s new on the market. (Unless you specifically want them back. I have loaned the VQ Library an Easy Circle Template, but want it back if it s not being borrowed.) CAN I HAVE A LIST? Sure! I m still working up the list of books on an excel spreadsheet, hoping we can add it to our webpage soon. WHAT S NEEDED FOR THE NEXT MEETING? Books and templates appropriate to donate to help replenish the library. Suggestions for books and tools/rulers you d like to see in the library (My brain doesn t hold things very well these days, so I d really appreciate a written note. Thx.) And finally, SPECIAL THANKS TO ANDREA KESKEY for offering to be a library assistant during meetings. And THANK YOU to all who purchased books at the last meeting. We already made $190 to put toward updating the library! Darlene

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 9 November 2009 Fabric Exchange Here are the patterns for the rest of the year: Month Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Fabric Christmas blenders (tone-on-tone or small print) Winter white, neutrals, and grey Orientals Soft baby pastels New colors on the market (you decide what this means) Fun summer novelties Patriotic red, white, and blue Mundane Things to Remember: You get one raffle ticket for each fat quarter you bring for the Fat Quarter Fabric Exchange drawing. Use a GOOD QUALITY fabric. We discussed that last year. Always pre-wash your fabric for the Exchange/Trade. If you are cutting 6 squares, please cut off the salvage edges. No need to do this if you are cutting a fat quarter. When cutting 6 squares, use good judgment and do not choose a large print, as they are more difficult to use. Both the Fabric Exchange and the Fabric Trade will use the same patterns/colors below. For the Fabric Trade of 6 squares, please put your 24 pairs (for a total of 48 squares) in a plastic baggie and label the bag with your name. If you have fewer than 48 squares, please note that on a piece of paper. (Thanks!) Have fun! Janet VQ is an organization of people who like and appreciated quilting. Our membership is made up of new quilters, old quilters and people who just appreciate the fabric arts. If you are new to quilting and thought quilt guilds were only for experienced quilters, please think again. Our meetings offer an opportunity to learn from each other and to be challenged to try new things. Each meeting provides opportunities to hear from talented guests in the quilting industry and identifies ways you can support your community through the making and giving of quilts to the needy. Meetings are held on the second Saturday, September through June. Join the guild for $25, renew your membership for $20 or come as a guest for $3. We look forward to seeing you.

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 12 November 2009 My Sewing Room New to the newsletter...take a look inside Karen Kluwin s sewing room. Briefly describe your sewing room Yes, it was originally in the smallest of the 4 bedrooms of our house. Then our daughter moved out last year, and I took the opportunity to claim it as my new sewing room. We took up the carpet and put down hardwood floors, moved all my sewing things in, and I m slowly settling in. Not sure if it s all in the right place yet, but I ll work at it. Do you have to share it (TV, computer, guest room)? I always think of it as a work in progress. Just when I get it arranged, I clean up and end up fixing it better than it was before. Did your sewing room ever serve as something else (baby/kid s room, garage)? Not really, unless you count the corner of the closet that I use for a coat closet. Considering we ve never had one in this house before, it is a pleasure to share the space. And, no, I don t even have a TV in the room.yet. Again, the space I have to spread out and work with. What is your favorite part? It s larger, and sunnier. My sewing machine is in front of the window that looks out onto the back yard. And I adore the wood floors. What makes sewing there easy? What makes sewing there hard (what would you like to change)? The clutter, oh it looks good now, but that s before I cleaned it up. When it s nice and clean like this, sewing is a breeze. Getting started on a new workshop project, picking the fabrics (which I m horrible at), then dashing out the door for a meeting/workshop and returning with just more items.sigh.

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 13 November 2009 What do you wish you had more or less of? More wall space for a design wall, more organization of the shelves, a new label maker and less UFOs. Also, I d like more time. But that s something I have to create. How often are you in your sewing room? Not as often as I should be, want to be, could be. I get home from work, and just don t have the energy to sew, or the desire to be in another room from my husband. Maybe that s why I ve enjoyed the hand sewing of the binding on quilts, I can be in the living room with Tom. Yes Janet, I can hear you in my head saying, Take up appliqué, it s portable. Friday night before the meeting is the busiest time for me. Do you have any great ideas about setting up a sewing room that you d like to share with the guild? Honestly? Just make it a space you re comfortable in, even if it s a lawn chair in a parking lot waiting for a fireworks show to start. If you are doing something you enjoy, have all the supplies in a small bag, and being with the one you love you have it made! We could visit each one of our houses and come away with a million ideas..mine? Sewing machine, good lighting, a few shelves for fabric and supplies; that s all it takes..
