1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 January 2018 January 2018 Happy New Year! Have you enjoyed this glorious weather? While the rest of the country is in a deep freeze, my family has taken advantage of the sunshine by playing tourist for the last few weeks. We ve gone to the zoo, and Old Town, and gone on long walks along the bay with the dog. I ll be ready for some quilting weather after the 1st, though, cooler, rainy weather that brings those long, gentle soaking rains which all our gardens need. The kind of weather to motivate us to finish those piles of UFOs! January might be a good month for quilting, but it is also the time of year when your guild president starts worrying about finding new board members and committee chairs. If you are still reading this and haven t turned the page because I m talking about volunteering, just know that my guiding philosophy for the board of directors and committee chairs is that those jobs should still be fun. We quilt because we enjoy it, we joined this guild because we want to be with and learn from other quilters. Well, serving as a president or running block of the month or organizing snacks or laying out the newsletter should still be fun. So think about it and consider what kind of job you could do to keep this guild the warm and happy place that it is. Jennifer Williams President fiddlinjenn@gmail.com

2 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 2 January 2018 Another year ahead. I have tallied up our statistics for What a terrific year! You ladies are awesome. So generous with your time and talents. We completed and sent: 87 quilts to Kaiser Special Care Unit 80 quilts to Gently Hugged 38 quilts to hidden Valley House 270 knitted and crocheted caps to Kaiser and Gently Hugged 307 bibs to Gently Hugged 6 quilts to Santa Rosa Quilt Guild for fire victims 18 quilts to Camp Alandale for abused children Grand Total of 229 quilts made by our wonderful guild members. Thank you, thank you all!!! February s guild meeting is devoted to making charity quilts. I will have many kits, fabric, batting and supplies. We will have directions and kits for a jellyroll race. The kits are for a small stroller size quilt, 34 x 30. If you want to give us a hand, make 20 (2 ) strips in pastel colors, infant colors 9blue, pale green, yellow and pink) or some variety of baby prints that blend together...plus a 3/4 yard of white or off white for borders. We have been approached by San Diego American Sewing Guild to explore if our guild would like to participate in making quilts for the victims of the lilac fire. What do you think? Lap size quilts and children s quilts. I will make a list at our January meeting of those who would like to participate in making a quilt for the fire victims. 5 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 5 January 2018 WAYS & MEANS Happy, happy holidays to all as we celebrate another successful year for the guild. In spite of not having our annual boutique, we did pretty well at raising money for the guild with minor expenses, less than $100 total. We had the raffle quilt that raised $117. the fabric sale raised $310. the church crafts fair, $607. My mini crafts sale at my home with my neighbors and my silver sneakers friends that raised $589. and at the potluck meeting, we raised $518. For a total of $2141. And the dog scarves raised even more. And again, a huge thank you to all of you who helped, a really terrific and talented group of ladies. I couldn t have done it without you!!! Happy New Year! Penny Bamford Ways and Means Hospitality Best wishes for a very Happy New Year. Thanks to the following members for volunteering to provide snacks for our January meeting. 6 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 6 January 2018 PROGRAMS JANUARY 13 TH - Becky McDaniel is our guest speaker and will share her passion for quilting along with her many beautiful quilts. Her Applique Journey will highlight several different types of applique along with samples so we can have a hands on while she gives her talk. JANUARY 14TH - Workshop with Becky McDaniel Orange Peel Pillow $40.00 This scrappy Orange Peel Pillow will use a foundation paper on the inside of your applique, that when soaked will change to a puffed fiber. Your finished project will look like you did the applique by hand. Prewash bright fabrics for the flower but neutral background fabrics should NOT be washed. Becky will have kits available for sale for $25 as well as the foundation paper to make this class easy to prepare for and easy to complete your project. NEW LOCATION FOR THE ORANGE PEEL PILLOW WORKSHOP A big THANK YOU to Sewing Machines Plus in San Marcos. They have agreed to let us use their beautiful classroom. Their address is: 713 Center Drive in San Marcos Directions: From I-15, go west on the 78. The first exit is Nordahl. Go right, then left into the Walmart shopping center (they are just south and west of Guitar Center). We currently have 16 members signed up for this class. However we now have room for two more, either guild or non-guild members. The cost of the class is $40 for members and $45 for non-members.
