SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 May 2017 May 2017 Two steps forward... I actually received good news from the IRS in April. Terrific news, actually. Our application for 501c3 status has been approved! Woohoo! We are now officially a non-profit organization! There are still a few housekeeping issues to take care of, but the biggest part of the process is complete, and I must confess to having a huge sense of relief after all that research and worry. And I m thrilled to have my sewing table back after having it covered first with guild paperwork then by my own tax preparation! But that excitement has been tempered by some rather unexpected news. The big holiday boutique -- our biggest fundraiser of the year -- has been cancelled! We only learned of it in the last few days, so I don t have an answer yet for what we will do. Ever the optimist, though, I think this is a terrific opportunity to perhaps find a similar boutique in another part of town or simply rethink how we do fundraising. We are a very creative and capable group of women, and I know we will find a brilliant solution to our fundraising needs. In the meantime I m celebrating the freedom from application paperwork and enjoying some sewing and hand quilting. What are you celebrating and creating this month? Jennifer Williams President

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 2 May 2017 Programs On May 13, our guest speaker is Cindy Myers. The title of Cindy s lecture is My Quilts are Not Quiet. We are looking forward to seeing some exciting and colorful quilts. Cindy s expertise is in foundation piecing. After taking a class with Judy Niemeyer, she fell in love with Judy s technique and organized process and is very excited to be a Judy Niemeyer Certified Instructor. She has been teaching quilting for over 12 years through her quilt guild and local quilt shops. She is active with her guild, the Nite Owl Quilters, holding various positions through the years. In her studio in Ontario, Cindy also does custom machine quilting and makes custom quilts on commission. Check out Cindy s website: Program Co-Chairs: Pat Kelley, Linda Pountney, Betty Hoogland Village Quilters Program Schedule (NOTE: Some Programs are Subject to Change) May 2017 through January 2018 Date Speaker/Event Program/Lecture May 13, 2017 June 10, 2017 July 08, 2017 August 12, 2017 Cindy Myers Guild Potluck Sit & Sew Sit & Sew My Quilts Aren t Quiet September 9, 2017 Barbara Shephard Blending Old and New October 14, 2017 Ways & Means November 11, 2017 Mickey Depre Me, Myself and I November 12, 2017 Mickey Depre www,mdquilts.com December 9, 2017 Holiday Potluck Chinese Auction January 13, 2018 Becky McDaniel My Quilt Journey Workshop: Half-Scrap Quilts Paradise Sewing 10:00 4:00 PM January 14, 2018 Becky McDaniel Foundation Paper Appliqued Orange Peel Pillow Location TBD 10:00 4:00 PM

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 3 May 2017 Programs Preview! Preview! On September 8th, our guest speaker is Barbara Shephard. In 20 plus years of passionate quilting, Barbara had produced many quilts, blending old needlework and traditional quilting patterns with modern fabrics and unique styles. With a mother who exhibited a quilt in the first Sister s Quilt Show 42 years ago and two sisters who are equally passionate about quilting, Barbara has a background that nourished her quilting creativity. Many of her quilts are embellished with crocheted and embroidered handwork acquired from antique shops. She has taken classes from Kaffe Fassett and admired his work and fabrics; and with friends and quilting companions has made many Kaffe quilts, all colorful and beautiful. She has spent many years doing hand applique and has some lovely hand appliqued quilts to show. More recently, she has made some quilts featuring applique with wool. You may have seen her at Rosie s where she has been teaching classes in applique and wool work. Barbara is looking forward to sharing the joy of quilting with our guild. On November 11, our guest speaker is Mickey Depre. Mickey s quilts have been described as whirlwinds of color, with oranges residing next to purples of all shades in harmony. Dots, swirls, and stripes intermingle with florals and prints in an outlandish yet exciting visual parade. Her work mixes traditional quilting techniques with bold, innovative machine applique and thread work. Fabric choices include her own hand dyed cotton with commercial cottons for a special spark of color and depth. WORKSHOP: Mickey Depre Half-Scrap Quilts Sunday, November 12 at Paradise Sewing in Poway Poway Road, Poway ( ) Half-Scrap Quilts is the title of her workshop. Check out her website ( ). More detailed information regarding the project, price, and supplies should be available at the May guild meeting along with a sign-up sheet for the workshop. On January 13, our guest speaker is Becky McDaniel. Betty and I recently met Becky at the SCCQG Meet the Teachers. She had an impressive booth showing off her quilts and a unique applique technique. Check out Becky s website ( ) and look for her Orange Peel Pillow. Linda Pountney

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 6 May 2017 Special Projects / Philanthropy Kasaan Hammon is going to visit our guild meeting Saturday, May 13, to receive the 15 quilts we have made for Camp Alandale, A Special Place for Abused Children, in the mountains of Idyllwild, California. Camp Alandale was founded in 1980 and serves abused and neglected children in the Southern California foster care system. They are a non-profit, 501c3 non-denominational Christian camp. The camp serves foster kids ages Camp is free for kids and supported 100% by donations. I want to give a big thank you to all who contributed quilts, quilted the quilts, and bound the quilts for Camp Alandale. They are spectacular. Thanks go to Lynnell Hallock, Deb McManus, Sharon Ainsworth, Cheri Fleming, Diana Foster, Annie Mitchell, Tina Lloyd, Linda, Mary Lewis, Eleanor Myrus, and Peggy Castor. It really takes a Village. 7 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 7 May 2017 WAYS & MEANS Spring is well underway and it will be summer before we know it. The response is getting better with more kits out and more finished items coming in. Many thanks to Sandy, Diane, Gail, Tina, Pam, and Deb for bringing in finished boutique projects. And a special thank you to Mary for her generous donations of Christmas fabric and batting. We still have many kits that need to be sewn, quilted or just need binding and any help is truly appreciated. Most of our kits are pretty simple and can be done in just a few days. Hopefully we will be able to complete many of the kits during the summer sit and sews. The Christmas boutique sales are our biggest fund raiser. And it is wonderful to show off the talent that all you quilters have. Our guild has a very positive reputation. Big thank you to all of you who have helped us. Penny Bamford Darlene Piche P.S. As you all now know, the holiday boutique has been canceled at Andrea s home. She did say that she would manage one at another venue. Any ideas or suggestions for a venue we could join would be great.

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 8 May 2017 Hospitality Thanks to everyone who brought delicious snacks to our last meeting. The following members have volunteered to bring snacks for our May meeting. Sharon Ainsworth Jeannette De La Torre Louisa Hawks Roxanne Howell Nancy Lynch Karen Nicholson Carol Shull Anyone else who would like to contribute, please feel free to bring a goodie to share. Thank you! Nancy Laursen and Maggie Forys Hospitality Co-Chairs Reminder: Village Quilters 2017 Spring Challenge: Postcards! The idea for this challenge comes from the San Diego Quilt Show in September, where the theme and challenge is Postcards from San Diego. Making postcards is quick and easy, and meant to be creative and fun. I m hoping that this guild challenge will inspire some of you to enter your creations in the Quilt Show! Postcards must be 5 X 7 and made out of fabric. Other details -- the batting, quilting, binding is entirely the creator s choice. Just like a real postcard, one side should have the image, the other side an address and short message. You can use fabric paint or pens for this or print something onto fabric. Postcards are due at our last meeting on June 10th. We will display them and perhaps vote for our favorite. Most important of all, though, have fun!

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 9 May 2017 Fabric Exchange May flowers!!! Isn t that what April Showers were supposed to bring? Well, we didn t have much in the way of showers in April, I think we got almost all of it in February and March.but no matter when it rained, it sure brought out all the flowers! I see them blossoming all over town, and they are gorgeous. This is the theme for Fabric Exchange this month. Flowers and ribbons.for May Day, of course. I remember when we lived in Alameda many years ago.i was at home, the doorbell rang and there was no one at the door.??? I couldn t imagine who had rung the bell. Then, as I shut the door, I noticed it. A small green produce basket with a bunch of wild flowers in it hanging on the doorknob. My face lit up with a big smile! Never had I been given such a gift. All those years and I d never known anyone to follow that simple ritual of leaving a basket of flowers on someone s doorstep for May Day. It turns out that my dear neighbor, Margaret (who worked at the daycare center across the street), was behind this. Then why ribbons for the other choice this month? For the Maypole dance, of course! You all knew I was about 40 years older than I claim to be, right? I just love the ways and days of old. Enjoy this month of May. Flowers start the month with the basket rituals and end with Memorial Day. See you at the meeting! Karen, your little fabric elf

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 10 May 2017 Hello quilters, Block of the Month The blocks provided by Annie in March were so cute. What a great quilt they will make. Diana Foster was the lucky winner. I provided the blocks for April and they are so simple I think everyone will turn them in finished, right? In May, Sharon Ainsworth is providing the blocks, and she already has them ready. This will be the last chance for block of the month until September. If you have not made blocks, now is a good time to sign up for next year. There will be a sign-up at the May and June meetings. If you have questions about how it works, just let me know. Lynnell lynnell@san.rr.com A special THANK YOU to Doris Hargrove who is cleaning out her sewing room! She has gifted Ways & Means this lovely 19 Sewing Grandma doll with wicker chair to raffle. We will be selling tickets at the next two meetings $1 each or 6 for $5. The raffle will be held at the May meeting. What a nice fundraiser for the guild! Thank you, Doris. Darlene
