1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 February 2014 February 2014 Love of reading seems to go hand in hand with quilting. Many quilters are prodigious readers and I am no exception. I was one of those kids that read cereal boxes at the breakfast table and the back of my Dad's newspaper as he read it. I came across an interesting article recently by Barbara Brachman that dealt with quit making folklore. Did you know that if you are the last one to put a stitch in a quilt you'll be the next to have a baby? Also, if you break a needle you will have the next baby. If you are wrapped in a new quilt right off the frame then you will soon be married. If you begin a quilt on Friday, then you will never finish it. I think Friday was considered a bad luck day to start anything and many couples would never marry on that day. Perhaps it was unlucky because Christ was crucified on that day. If you work on a quilt on Sunday, then after you die every stitch that you put in on that day will have to be picked out with your nose before you can enter heaven! (I guess all quilters are destined for heaven. Some with a little penance and make up work!) Cats seem to come into play in the predictions also. If you toss a cat on to a newly made quilt, the girl the cat jumps toward will be married first. If you wrapped her in the quilt( without the cat) she would soon be married. I don't know how many girls were scratched by these hapless cats. In other areas, the girl or boy who took home the new quilt to sleep under would marry the partner dreamed of that night. I like the one best that says that if a girl had some one special in mind she could win her lover by the ritual of placing his shoes under the edge of the bed in the shape of a T for nine nights. She had to recite a special chant, also. I wonder what the young man did without his shoes for those nine days? (Not everyone could afford the luxury of more than one pair of shoes in those days) Many of the folklore myths dealt with death and disaster. Certain patterns were considered bad luck: Lone Star, Hexagons and Job's Troubles. It may be that the patterns were made for people whose lives took an unexpected turn for the worse and the only new item in their lives was the quilt and therefore it was blamed for this. Also the life span of adults many years ago was not very long and some of these quilts took many years to collect the fabrics and to complete so many of their destined owners died before they were completed. There are a few myths that deal with death before completion. These are all myths with little or no basis in history or fact. Don't take them seriously and keep you from finishing those projects. Keep on quilting. She who dies with the most quilts finished gets into heaven first!( I made that one up) See you at the meeting. We have a great speaker and a workshop. 2 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 2 February 2014 Dragon Lady quilt patterns: They re not really so scary Programs For Sharon Wilhite of Dragon Lady Quilts, quilting has become a welcome complement to her work as a software and website developer. She does the bootbarn.com website, filled with cowboy boots and apparel as well as some splendid hats. It s fun to peruse, but the techie work behind it can be very exacting and highly stressful, she said. That s where quilting comes in to provide relaxation. An Oceanside resident, she took a class at Quilt in a Day a very long time ago and built the skills that eventually led to a side business in quilt design. It reached a point where the patterns that were on the market were not quite what I wanted, she said. Needing more challenging projects, she started designing her own, and the very first one, Florentine Fantasy, led to a request from Robert Kaufman Fabrics for a pattern sheet. She now creates patterns for five fabric manufacturers. She ll share examples of her creations at Village Quilters on Saturday, February 8, 10 a.m. to noon at Scripps Miramar Ranch Library, Scripps Lake Drive, San Diego. Meetings are open to nonmembers for a $5 fee. Wilhite is also leading a workshop on making her Alejandro quilt, based on a simplified kaleidoscope square, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bits N Pieces, Danielson Ct. Suite 111, Poway. Although the Alejandro pattern looks intricate, Wilhite promises that it s easier than it looks. Everything I design can be successfully achieved by a confident beginner. Another chance to take a class from Bonnie Hunter: Because Elaine Swatniki, an assistant Programs Chair for Friendship Quilters, is honoring a tentative agreement we have to share workshops in , we can participate in one of that guild s 3 Bonnie Hunter workshops in October. We have 10 slots available for the My Blue heaven! scrap quilt workshop on Tuesday, Oct 14, this year. The cost is $50. If more than 10 people want to sign up and pay at the Feb. meeting, we ll give preference to those who didn t make it into our bonnie hunter workshop on the Pineapple Blossom quilt on Fri, Oct 10, and then do a drawing to determine who can participate in the Tuesday class. I ll keep a standby list of several would-be participants for each class in case some people s plans change. For details on the My Blue Heaven pattern using 2.5 strips, see Note: For this project, she recommends using two EZ Angle rulers: the EZ Angle (she likes the 6.5 size) and the EZ Companion Angle, as well as your regular rotary cutting ruler. 3 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 3 February 2014 Special Projects Our Round Robin is underway with 7 participants. We will have a nice surprise in June when we reveal our gorgeous quilts. We had 5 quilts donated for Kaiser special care unit to go on the premature babies isolettes. These quilts measure 24 x 36 inches. 2 quilts were donated to Gently Hugged. These quilts measure 40 x 40 inches or smaller. Gently Hugged donates used baby clothes to needy babies. A small quilt is placed in each box of donated clothing. 2 quilts donated to Hidden Valley House, a women s shelter in the North County. These quilts can be any size for women or children Thank you very much to all who donated a quilt for our Charities. A special thanks to Deb McManus, Ashlee and Sharon Ainsworth for all the machine quilting they do for the guild!! There are many, many kits available at the Special Projects Desk at each guild meeting. Make just a top take a kit or do your own thing. Chocolate will be available if you take a kit. A fat quarter measures 18 x 22. If you want, you can buy ½ yd of fabric and cut it down the fold. Be sure that the fold is right on center. Requested Recipe: Creamy Curry Dip 1 cup mayonnaise 1 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon curry powder 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 3/4 teaspoon seasoned rice wine vinegar 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon minced dried onion 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl, whisk until well blended. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator. Serve with fresh vegetables (or chips). Keeps well. Yield: about 2 cups dip Barb Maietta

The food table was overflowing again. Home made, store bought, fruit and veggies, every thing so gooood and tasty!! Wasn't Kathy's trunk show the "BEST"!!!!!! Good food, good company and wonderful entertainment all for free. We sure are a lucky bunch. I for one am really inspired. Hope the inspiration lasts until I get some UFO'S done. I am looking forward to seeing the creations everyone makes with the Laurel Burch squares Jill brought for January. Annie Mitchell won the Bento blocks that Hope Campbell brought for November. 9 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 9 February 2014 Ways & Means Looking forward to putting some kits together to start on this year's boutique. Will have a date at the meeting in February for anyone that wants to come help work on the kits. We are down a little from what we started with last year, but we sold about $4, from boutique and our December meeting, so it's a good thing. Thank you, ladies. But we all need to get to work this year with new "things". If anyone has suggestions for new items that we could try selling along with what we normally make, we are open to any and all suggestions so please don't hesitate to let us know. Our membership is made up of new quilters, old quilters and people who just appreciate the fabric arts. Each meeting provides opportunities to hear from talented guests in the quilting industry and identifies ways you can support your community through the making and giving of quilts to the needy. Well, the answer to that question would be: At the February 2014 guild meeting! You will find the sign-up form on the next page. If you have never been to a retreat, it s a *lot* of fun. And the retreat center does all the cooking! We just sew, eat, sew, sleep, sew, eat, sew, etc. for 2-1/2 days. Hope to see you there! Kathy Greene

Check-in time begins at 10:30 AM on Friday, Oct 31 (yes, the retreat starts on Halloween). (If you arrive earlier than 10:30 AM, you *may* have to wait for weekday retreaters to remove their belongings. Please do not enter the sewing room until the previous occupants have completely removed their belongings.) Check-out is Sunday at 2PM. Registration fee includes lunch and dinner Friday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner Saturday; and brunch on Sunday. The Retreat Center provides coffee, tea and water. Please bring snacks to share. We have reserved 10 double-occupancy rooms, allowing 20 retreat participants. Registration begins February 8, 2014 for current active members.
