3 March Madness It was Monday, April 2, 2012, and Punster President Bill Bloomfield welcomed Wendell Harter home to his Rotary Club. Wendell, accompanied by his wife Madelyn, received a prolonged standing ovation and more than a few moist eyes (Madelyn gave us a good medical history, an invitation to visit-but call first, not -and thanked David Boochever and Steve DeBaets for new door handles to ease Wendell's way at home...it was the day of the March Madness championship game, and Dan Saks used the occasion to quote John Wooden, telling us to "do something each day for someone who can never repay you"..guests included Dick Ackerman's "Maid Miriam" and Jan Rhees' Mike Grady..Geoff Bremer urged participation in the April 15 bowling challenge with Interact...Tom Jeffry urged attendance at the April 10 District Breakfast, featuring speaker Terrence Roberts of the Little Rock Nine. Lost Marbles Patrick Donahue was our Mystery Rotarian. He motorcycles, bicycles, surfs, scubas, and rides horses when he's not taking those gorgeous photos...president Bill suggested that, if Kansas won the championship game (see quote on front cover), Rotarians A-K would get breakfast today paid by Rotarians L-Z. Oh, well...our club's pre-meeting prayer group invites all comers and regularly includes Vinny Fazzino, Steve DeBaets, Steve Murillo and James Caprell...Charlie Steinmetz is back from Peru where he found a drinking cup made from the skull of a rival whacked by an Inca...Mark Curran's daughter has been in D.C. at a service conference growing out of her service activity at Cal Poly SLO..Wade Austin's wife Wanda will be the speaker at UCLA's engineering school commencement...the Dodgers chose Larry Johnson's company as a food supplier...lee Walker recognized Tim James Auringer for his audio-visual work at our meetings, prompting President Bill to recognize several more folks who facilitate our meetings-patrick Donahue, Lindy Murrell, Patty Panucci and John Rhind..There was no raffle after President Bill lost his marbles (an obvious comment, I know, but who could resist?).

4 War Games & Literacy We enjoyed two speakers today. Kathleen Terry introduced Christine Campisi, who is the publicity chairwoman of the South Bay Literacy Council, which focuses its efforts on adults who are functionally illiterate. Several of our club members have been tutors in their program, and Christine shared her own volunteer tutoring stories. As Kathleen told us, literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility. (You can volunteer at bayliteracy.org)..middle school teacher Duke Winser showed us slides of his work in 4th-8th grades promoting his life-long hobby of military history in miniature. It started at age 4 when he got a Fort Apache play set, and he has turned it into large, elaborate, scenic sets of famous military campaigns-the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, the Seven Years War, the Napoleonic Wars, and more. He started the Manhattan Beach Middle School Wargaming Club, expecting a few of his classroom alums to show up, and found 45 kids at the first meeting. Teaching & Preaching Duke Winser is of course more than a teacher-he's also a preacher. Asked by President Bill how he integrates his fascination with military history with his role as a clergyman, Duke simply replied, Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition. He multitasks, in other words, and is just one more member of this club who qualifies as the most interesting man in the world. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

6 How I Introduce Guests 1) Five to ten minutes prior to gaveling the meeting to order, the introducer goes to the Club Secretary retrieves a list of guests' names. At this time, the list SHOULD BE READ making sure the names are legible. 2) Find the guest and ask them how they pronounce their name if it's a difficult name. Ask who brought or invited them. Write that name next to their name if it hasn't already been done. 3) Once, you are at the podium introduce: a) Visiting Rotarians first. b) Then call on THE PERSON who brought the guest, unless that person is not present. The sponsor of the guest will have the guest stand, wave and the sponsor takes 15 to 30 seconds to introduce his or her guest. The guest sits down. THE GUEST DOES NOT SPEAK, unless it has been cleared with the President. If guest is solo, let the guest take 15 to 30 seconds to state who they are and what they are about. TELL THE GUEST THIS AHEAD OF INTRODUCTIONS. c) Make a call to the room to see if you have missed any guests. This can be done two ways: 1) Call to the room asking for guests or visitors, 2) Call table by table asking for guests or visitors. 4) If you have cleared it with the President, you may sing "The Welcome Song." This can be done three ways: a) You have the whole room stand and sing together while finding guests with which to shake hands, b) You can sing by yourself, c) You can sing by yourself in the closet. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects.
