Today George Barks and Mark Ledesma of the Manhattan Beach Sister City Committee updated us on recent Hurricane Jimena relief efforts, including delivery of $3000 emergency funds (contributed on an expedited basis by our Manhattan Beach Rotary Club) to Jose Luis Benson of Santa Rosalia Rotary, along with the Sister City Committee s successful delivery of $9000 more, plus a 40-foot truckload of supplies (loaded in part by our own President Jan Rhees) to Mulege and Santa Rosalia. 6 Rotary is Service Above Self Drink Responsibly Our own Chief Rod Uyeda brought us a somber message for the holidays: If you drink and drive, then do so responsibly. MBPD Detective Steve Kitsios presented the extraordinary film that he and many other local citizens produced about the scourge of drunk driving. With Mira Costa students, their parents, and our local police officers and paramedics acting their parts, we witnessed the harrowing and heartbreaking aftermath of a drunk driving collision that resulted in three fatalities and one prison sentence. The film, Every 15 Minutes, is now available on YouTube and will soon be on our website. (Even knowing the incident was staged, I saw many of us tearing up the film really is that good.) Mira Costa will be visited by the Grim Reaper every two years to bring home this message to juniors and seniors and the most recent school assembly on the subject featured speaker Christopher Williams, who lost his wife and two children to a drunk driver (he is featured in the film). City Rivals After a minor spat over whether USC beat UCLA 21-7 or 28-7 (the combatants finally took a timeout), Chris Ullman announced a benefit to the club of $500 from his mysterious Ouija board, with a none-more-deserving big winner: Burger King Russ Samuels. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects.
