5 Rotary is Service Above Self Forgiveness And Other Virtues It was Monday, December 12, 2011, and President Bill Bloomfield banged the gavel on the bell lest we be too preoccupied to hear Rick Farrell s holiday gift suggestions (he recommends the gifts that matter, like forgiveness)..john Hugunin s guest was his bride of 45 years, Carole.When Sandpiper Holiday Basket volunteers were asked to stand and be recognized, it seemed like half the room rose up..santa Bill thanked his elves.tom Jeffry urged us to do as Mike Matthews just did, namely go online to sign up for the January 10 District Breakfast, featuring the General Manager of the RI Foundation.Kent Caldwell was honored for his 30 years in the club President Bill called him an Unsung Hero, but Patrick Donahue, noting Kent s musical talent, suggested he s a Sung Hero..Still more members stood up to be recognized for assisting at the Joslyn Center s Senior Citizen Holiday Luncheon (which Wendell Harter was finally old enough to attend). Happy Dollars Ed Kushins is simply grateful to be a Rotarian.Russ Rothner is grateful for the experience of delivering Sandpiper Holiday Baskets.Alex Yoffe is grateful for Rotary s help with the Sandpiper Holiday Baskets, given that his wife Kristen was in charge of the project.john Osten s son has not only passed the Bar but, better yet, now has a job with a law firm.james Caprell is grateful to the club for its member support of the Casa Hogar CBV gift drive for the children, spearheaded by James, Steve Murillo, Vinny Fazzino, and Randy Meadors (all of whom were brilliantly caricatured by James on a poster which you can view on our club s Facebook page, thanks to Facebook impresario Donn Ennis).Patrick Donahue defied 17 to 1 odds and walked off with $333 for finding the white marble. Rick Davis What a coup President Bill pulled off for us this date, bringing us Rick Davis, campaign manager in both 2000 and 2008 for John McCain. President Bill was McCain s national volunteer coordinator in 2008, so, as Davis said, he owed Bill, and Bill collected that debt on our behalf, bringing this high profile political genius (think

8 Rotary is Service Above Self Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, James Carville, David Axelrod) to our club. Remarkably self-effacing for a man who lives in such an aggressive world, Davis shared multiple, candid campaign stories with us. Among these: at its low point the 2008 McCain campaign was broke and laying off staff. Bill Bloomfield showed up and said he d manage the volunteer effort at a time when volunteers were few in number. But soon there were a multitude of volunteers, whom Davis says were far more effective thanks to Bill s management. Davis is first a businessman and second a politician, currently devoting his energies to his investment company, Pegasus. He chaired the Young Republicans while a student at Alabama, became Bob Dole s 1996 deputy campaign manager, and then famously joined McCain. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, who is a veterinarian. Davis handicapped today s Republican presidential primary race, suggesting it s Newt Gingrich s to lose, but also suggesting that at least the Old Newt is quite capable of turning this into a loss. He d like to see more energy in the Romney campaign, but believes Romney remains quite viable. His hope for a GOP win is the widespread Republican unified opposition to President Obama. He is alarmed by the prospect of a Gingrich-Obama campaign in which both candidates start out with negative approval ratings, a perhaps unprecedented situation. Such a campaign would be highly entertaining, he believes, but he d like to see leadership that transcends politics and believes a third party centrist candidate, despite the historical odds, could get in the mix. Davis also shared some McCain campaign stories. He believes that McCain, though he lost the nomination race in 2000, built up so much goodwill through his positive campaign style that it carried right into He also took some credit (blame?) for the Sarah Palin selection, putting us back in context, surmising that we ll never know if the Palin candidacy could have succeeded because the September 16, 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers turned the entire election upside down in unpredictable ways.

9 Rotary is Service Above Self Third Party Candidate: Rick Davis commented that this may be the year for a viable third party candidate. Right on cue, President-Elect Tom Jeffry posted another one of his campaign slides for President Bill, promoting him this time as the standard-bearer of the Tea & Crumpet Party. While President Bill blocked the screen and turned off the projector, all agreed that America could do worse.
