Eric Iverson is our 2010 Burger King. October 3 RAW at Hometown Fair. Randy Meadors has organized a club band, RAW (Rotary At Work), now famous after its boffo performance at the Demotion. An expanded version will be on the main stage at the Hometown Fair at 10 am, featuring covers of the Traveling Wilburys, Beach Boys, Blues and more. Be there! Nov 3 South Bay Ethical Forum. Join other South Bay Rotarians in a lively discussion on ethical issues. More information will be provided. Nov 6 CERT Training. A mini One Day CERT Training (8:00-4:30) specifically created for Rotarians. This session will provide us with the skills we need to jump into be of help in our community when there is a disaster. 3 Rotary is Service Above Self Changing Lives and Getting Seasick It was Monday, August 23, 2010, and President Roger Cox presented us with a beautiful booklet of original art work by the elementary school students at 186th Street School, thanking us for sponsoring their trip to the Ocean Institute. Samples: In my whole entire life, that was my favorite trip ever! I cannot say thank you a little, because this by far was one of my best life experiences ever. Thank you for paying the fines so 186 St. could go to Dana Point. I had so much fun. I feel seasick. You have taught us a lot of what s in that ocean. And from the principal: You are changing lives for GOOD! Club News David Harris started us off with some John Wooden quotes and he proved he follows them at the last Board meeting, as he has pyramided our successful club foundation portfolio into a permanent fund valued at over 300K..Years of marriage: Jay Harkenrider wins this week with 37 years behind him (if you had Susan, where else would you go?).susan Adams is our Hometown Fair Wine Garden coordinator..wade Austin tried to award a Paul Harris fellowship to Deb-something, but the Deb in question failed to surface. If at first you don t succeed Russ Rothner has been working with the Jimmy Miller Foundation, doing things like teaching wounded Marines how to surf.ten of our members attended the District Youth Protection Seminar.Wade Austin back at it, this time praising Paul Sanchez for outstanding dental work provided to his daughter-inlaw.rich Ham s son, a recent UCSB grad has a job He s off my payroll and on someone else s Roger Cox found eight Rotarians to play golf with him last week. The Famous Five Directors President Roger Cox provided commentary from the directors of our Five Avenues of Service, introducing each through five characters from the Famous Five books (I guess you have to be a Kiwi). International Director Matt Peck covered the Casa Hogar Orphanage, medical flights to El Fuerte, Santa Rosalia, Mali water wells, Colombian musical instruments, the Dominican Republic, Neutragena sales to End Polio (a 2K check sent this very day), and

6 Rotary is Service Above Self more. Community Director Rich Ham covered the Joslyn Center, schools, 40K in college scholarships, Meals on Wheels, the Roundhouse Aquarium, and more. Vocational Director Kathleen Terry covered tours, literacy, reading in schools, dictionaries, teachers, police, firefighters, student musicians, Junior Achievement, CERT training, spotlighting members who have a passion for their careers, and more. New Generations Director John Hugunin covered Interact, Rotaract, Youth Protection, and a possible new club at MBMS. Club Service Director Russ Samuels covered the Demotion, Christmas, Magic in Giving, the 60th Anniversary, Mozart, and provided a cricket demonstration, featuring President Roger bowling to Arturo DiPietro s wicket with Tim James keeping and Kathleen Terry fielding. All of this was for our special guest. District Governor s Visit District Governor Doug Baker made his official visit to our club this date. He was greeted by all the above, plus songsters/guitarists/harpist President Roger, Larry Johnson, Kent Caldwell, Paul Allman and Rick Farrell, all impudently singing of Governor Doug s being Asleep at the Wheel. Governor Doug in turn insulted our directors (they deserved it), kept us laughing pretty continuously, and showed a video featuring himself speaking to an audience of one, our own President Roger (who ends up walking out on him). The video featured many in the District, including some of our own members, and lots of bad dancing. Governor Doug s message: Practice the fine art of jocularity (from Paul Harris). David Paul Harris presented the Governor with a Bigger Better Boulder, President Roger presented a bottle of HERO wine, and we were done. But not until District Governor Doug Baker told us: This is one of, if not the best, clubs in You have it nailed perfectly. So does he. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

Our secretary, Katie Gleason, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Katie keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects.
