1 SERVICE ABOVE SELF The Rotominder CHATHAM, ONTARIO Rotary Club of Chatham Chatham Capitol Theatre, Rotary Lounge 238 King St W. Phone Wednesdays at 12:15 P.M. Fax ORIGINAL CHARTER # 1011 issued - November 1 st, 1921 President Charles Seaman PRESIDENT OF R.I. DISTRICT 6380 GOVERNOR SECRETARY EDITOR Kalyan Banerjee Stephen Youtz Keith Dawson Sandee Frederick Rotary Club of 19 Braemar Blvd Executive Secretary Club Vapi Milford Chatham, ON Rotary Club of Gujarat, India Michigan N7M 6G2 Chatham Reach Within to Embrace Humanity WEDNESDAY May 9, 2012 DATE PUBLISHED May 10, 2012 Our guest speaker this week was Steve Baker, president of Union Gas. Steve was born in Chatham-Kent and attended CCI. He was introduced by Rotarian Denise Spadotto who also works at Union Gas. Denise informed us that Steve attended The University of Waterloo where he received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. In addition, he became a chartered accountant. He joined Union Gas in 1989 and became president in January of this year. Today, he talked about the natural gas market. The price of the commodity has dropped significantly during the past few years. In 2008, the wholesale price peaked at $14 per thousand cubic feet. During this past winter, the price dropped to below $2. The reason for the large drop is the unusual increase in the amount of natural gas in storage areas. In fact, today, there is more gas available than can be stored and this has created the
2 lowest prices of the last 10 years. North America is now looking at ways to export natural gas. New technologies, such as horizontal directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing, have created huge supplies in the Ohio-Pennsylvania shale areas as well as many other locations. Horizontal drilling allows for drilling vertically for several thousand feet and then drilling horizontally for up to a mile. This locates many more pools of gas than straight vertical drilling. Fracturing is a technique used to release natural gas by creating fractures in a rock layer using pressurized liquids. The greater supply of natural gas is good news for the consumer who has seen his gas bill drop dramatically during the past year. It also has been a great stimulus to business and commerce - billions of dollars in energy savings in Ontario alone. Many sectors, such as transportation, are now thinking of using more natural gas - both from an economical perspective and also for better air quality. Union Gas is a large employer in Chatham-Kent and a valued corporate citizen. Chatham-Kent is thankful to have Union Gas located here and our appreciation was expressed by Rotarian Allyson Storey. Keith Dawson President Charles Seaman, Steve Baker (President Union Gas), Denise Spadotto, Alysson Storey
