Movember is intended to focus all of us on Men s Health, especially prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and physical inactivity. People won t have time for you if you are always angry and complaining. Stephen Hawking TODAY S PROGRAM Nov 2 Craft Talks. This morning we will hear Craft Talks by Tim Hageman and Steve Delk. Get the back story on two of our newer members.

2 Programs Nov 9 Advances in Dentistry. Ray Padilla, dentist for the Galaxy and UCLA, will bring us up to date on advances in dentistry. Nov 16 Richstone Family Center. Roger VanRemmen, CEO of Richstone Family Center, will update us one the organization where many Rotarians volunteer. Nov 23 Craft Talks. This morning we will hear Craft Talks by Tom Zimmerman and Mike Dobak Save The Date Nov 4 Board Meeting. Rotary Board of s meeting at President Rich Ham s house, 6:30pm. Nov 7 Ocean Trails Hike. A hike with lunch after. Ed Kushins will be sending out information. Nov 11 Veteran s Day Event. Join Mayor Mark Burton at 11 am at 15th and Valley for this great holiday event. Nov 14 Foundation Celebration. The Rotary Foundation Celebration is at Loews Santa Monica Hotel, $125 per person. See the District 5280 e-newsletter for more information. Dec 6 MB Rotary Holiday Party. This year our holiday party will be at Lido di Manhattan Ristorante.

3 Prayers It was Monday, October 26, 2015, and President Richard Ham designated Chris Ullman to kick off the meeting, starting with Steve Murillo advising us to love one another. As we gathered, Roger Cox was going under the knife for some kind of brain tumor a surgery we have since learned went well. Roger s mother and sister have flown in from New Zealand, and, in Roger s honor, New Zealand has beaten South Africa s Springboks and moved on the Halloween final of the Rugby World Cup against Australia.We also found ourselves wishing and praying for the recovery of cancer patient Anne Lore, Steve Lore s wife. Movember Larry Johnson presented certificates from the Manhattan Beach City Council to his committee members who are making the Niger project such a success..les Silverman is bringing attention to Movember with a half-moustache. Happy Dollars Dennis Ridge apologized for posting the picture in the Bulletin of Chris Ullman, Ray Padilla and Russ Samuels with an unrelated caption, then produced a new Bulletin with their eyes blacked out.. 4 Montgomery estimated a $1.4 million take for the Pier-to-Pier walk fundraiser..steve Murillo is now a sensei at Patrick Fard s dojo, which frees him up to bicycle along the Rhine in two weeks in a trip arranged by Barbara Matles.Ian Jackson will be watching the World Rugby Cup final.loli Ramezani is celebrating the second anniversary of her business.ed Kushins attended his 50th high school reunion and somehow held off the advances of two girls who had 50-year crushes on him..sue Vogl is pleased that USC beat Utah and that her daughter won a pumpkin race..shannon Ryan took a 25th anniversary trip with husband Chris to Grenada where she found a Rotary meeting to attend..russ Samuels repeated his chant, Let s Go Mets! (down 2-0 as I write this)..rich Ham s son has joined Raytheon.Mike Doell is enjoying a 6th grandchild and is planning for our city s November 11 Veterans Day ceremony. State of the City Larry Wolf introduced our speaker, our own Mayor Mark Burton. It was an insanely power-packed presentation. Here s a summary: 1. City Council meetings will be shorter. Public comments will be invited early rather than late and will be limited to 2 minutes per person. 2. Our new City Manager practices less talk and more getting things done.

5 3. Our new HR, from Stockton, will reinstitute annual performance evaluations. 4. Our new Community Development will improve customer service. 5. IT will be upgraded. 6. We are managing change downtown. We are now in a 24-month timeout that ends June 30, We are overdue to get serious about downtown planning, like so many quaint east coast villages did decades ago (also Carmel, Laguna Beach and Coronado). We will upgrade streetscapes and sidewalks, with first floor retail and upstairs offices. 7. We will also begin to focus on the Sepulveda Corridor and the North End. 8. Digital Ventures is a venture capital company coming our way as we strive to become Silicon Beach South. As part of this effort, we are putting out RFQs for 5-star hotels. 9. Property and sales taxes are our major sources of revenue. So are bed taxes. 10. We own the Marriott land. The hotel is up for sale. We look for it to be upgraded. There are also possible hotel sites east of the Village and in the North End. 11. Gelson s application is expected in a couple weeks. The staff will vet it. Then the Planning Commission will review it, and undoubtedly the City Council as well. There is a lot of misinformation out there about this project. The alternatives tend to look worse for the neighborhood. 12. Capital improvements will include the Fire Station on Manhattan Beach Blvd, a municipal pool, more downtown parking and a new city hall. And by the way, the valet parking program downtown has worked well. 13. Unfunded mandates are a continuing concern for City finances. Storm water permit requirements imposed by the state, for example, could cost residents substantial money. 14. Contract bargaining is upcoming with five city employee groups. Changes in CalPERS make these contracts unpredictable and necessarily short term. 15. We have a Mobility Plan to encourage bicycling and walking.

7 16. The three projected phases of the Mall revamp are not easily separated. We have a new developer who has proposed a magical plan. The plan requires Macy s to consolidate their two stores, and they are reticent to do so. The plan is to create a community gathering place similar to The Point, to build a garage where the theaters now are, and to address the Fry s lot last of all. 17. The proposed Sepulveda bridge widening requires traffic planning with our neighboring cities. 18. Risk management includes making sensible financial decisions, such as settlement negotiations in the Polliwog Park golf disc injury cases. The negotiations are private, but the final settlements should be announced at public City Council meetings, in part to avoid letting others distort the story. 19. (How d I do, Mark?) Miss America As I write this, Charlie Steinmetz is recruiting volunteers for dictionary deliveries, this time in the early morning on November 4. On that date, he will visit St. Anthony of Padua School in Gardena, and he entices us to join him with visions of the school s principal, Angela Grey, our 2001 Miss America. But I suspect that the happy children s faces that Charlie has been seeing during his countless dictionary deliveries are more than enough enticement for him or anyone else. Charlie s foundation, with the involvement of our club, has been a continuing story for us for many years, and, knowing Charlie, will continue for many years to come.
