3 Rotary is Service Above Self Rotary Stars It was Monday, August 29, 2011, and I missed Summer Breeze, but arrived in time to see President Bill Bloomfield award Sharon Gradinette (musical bride of musical Paul Allman) a Paul Harris Fellowship. (September 11 in the evening is Sharon s We Can Pediatric Brain Tumor Network annual fundraiser at Salt Creek Grille ask Paul for details.)..our starry array of guests included District Governor Elect Lew Bertrand, District Membership Chair Dean Reuter, Wendell Harter s wife Madelyn, John Acker s wife Lisa, and Ray Padilla s wife and daughter, Margaret and Jennifer..President Bill thanked Randy Meadors for his weekend Star Party, Kathleen Terry reminded us to be at Finance Park (Junior Achievement) on September 17 with spouses in tow, and President Bill inducted our newest Rotary star, Stephanie Skrbin, sponsored by Jordan Peister (i before e except after c and in Peister). Starry Nights Our guest speaker rightly occupied the entire meeting. Dr. Geoff Marcy, professor of astronomy at Berkeley and San Francisco State, treated us to a compelling talk on the search for intelligent life in the universe, timely following Randy Meadors star party and Steve Murillo s talk on ufology. Dr. Marcy is the recipient of numerous awards, including California Scientist of the Year, and is a worldrenowned expert on exoplanets (planets outside our solar system). Here s some of what he had to say: Exoplanets We are very, very close to finding life out there, and perhaps intelligent life. There is clearly no intelligent life in our solar system other than Planet Earth. We find planets by looking for regularly repeating dimming of star light an orbiting planet may cause dimming of one part in 10,000. So a space-borne telescope is needed, and we have the Kepler Telescope out there on a 4-year mission its every camera shot takes in 150,000 stars. The star called Kepler 10 has been a major focus, with a planet now identified as to size, orbital period, mass and density. This work is accelerating we ve identified 2000 near-earth-size planets, including 1235 in the past year. We ve found
4 Rotary is Service Above Self 6 planets on the star Kepler 11. Just a few weeks ago we learned the Kepler Telescope has found 170 multiple-planet systems. Habitable Planets Habitable planets need lukewarm temperatures and the basic ingredients for life: water, energy and organic molecules. What are the odds of finding such a planet? The Milky Way has 30 billion planetary systems and the universe has hundreds of billions of galaxies. The most pessimistic scientists guess that one in a million planets is habitable, which means there should be thousands of civilizations in our galaxy alone. Signs of Life However, we have no signs of life out there. The untouched surfaces of Mars and the Moon reveal no visitors. There have been no telescopic sightings of UFO s, no radio signals, no gamma rays, no robotic probes, nothing. Three speculative but possible explanations for this: 1. Earth is very precious, with just the right amount of water 0.06%, and unlikely to be replicated. 2. Evolution does not necessarily favor intelligence see, for example, the dinosaurs, so a habitable planet may not evolve intelligent life. 3. Technology may cause civilizations to self-destruct. How to learn more? Fund SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), the organization spearheading this quest, which Dr. Marcy believes is comparable to our quest to put a man on the moon. Technological Life Interestingly enough, both Dr. Geoff Marcy and Steve Murillo ended their talks on the same note: Technological life may simply be extremely rare, despite the odds, because technological civilizations may not have the social/political/spiritual capacity to handle technology. Which may explain why Dr. Marcy flew down from the Bay Area to address our local Rotary Club because Rotary represents the best our technologically advanced civilization offers and needs to survive. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett
