2 Programs May 5 Upcoming Concert. Join us this morning as we hear from Cantor Ilan Davidson. His band,the Moody Jews, are working on two more recordings, including Still In A Hanukkah Mood, a CD of new, original Hanukkah melodies. May 12 Space Tourism. Shelley R. Bonus, an astronomical historian and lecturer, and her unique ability to master her subject, makes the mysteries of the night sky come alive for not only professional, but amateur astronomers of all ages as well. 3 Teamwork: Firefighters It was Monday, April 21, 2014, and President Kathleen Terry presented Tim James Auringer, who told us, Failure isn t falling down; failure is staying down. After recognizing Dennis Morehead and the many members of our scholarship committee, President Kathleen got right to the program, introducing John Hugunin (his head somewhat lost in Fire Chief Bob Espinosa s helmet), who turned the podium over to Bob. (John was himself a volunteer summer firefighter in Kern County over 50 years ago, so he wore the helmet naturally.) Bob told us about our city s Firefighter of the Year, James Stratton, selected by his peers. A graduate of Manhattan Beach schools, James has focused on care, maintenance and training he coordinates paramedic supplies, manages the intern program, works with safety training, and is the department photographer. Accepting the award, James told us that the award really goes to his team: This is a reflection on my shift, B Shift. Teamwork: Science John Hugunin then literally changed hats, now donning a school graduation cap to present our relatively new Science Awards. John told us that the United States is barely average in international surveys of math and science education, but Manhattan Beach is clearly on the leading edge. MBUSD administrator Carolyn Seaton introduced MBMS Principal John Jackson, who presented science awards for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. (We also learned that Mr. Jackson was named, by the Association of California School Administrators, statewide middle school principal of the year.) Next up was the now familiar stand-up comic, Mira Costa Principal Ben Dale, who presented four Costa Science Award winners, telling us that Costa now has a 1.5 to 1 ratio of students to teachers in science labs. Just as James Stratton told us that firefighting depends on teamwork, we heard the same message from our science award winners science depends on teamwork. (The students made a point of thanking their teachers.) To top it off, President Kathleen thanked John Hugunin and Dave Hornbecker for their teamwork in organizing our firefighter and science awards.

4 Teamwork: Magic In Giving Jim Lambert told us that 145 Magic in Giving tickets have been sold as we reach for his goal of selling 250 tickets. 11 of 12 live auction items are set, as are 79 of 100 silent auction items. The more the merrier, so contact Jim to help increase these numbers. The success of MIG is, after all, all about teamwork. Teamwork: Rotarians at Work President Kathleen recognized Bob Stephenson for his behind the scenes work for our club. Past President Bob is on our Foundation Board, handles our Art Winsworth engineering scholarship program, and does the thankless job of preparing our taxes..president Kathleen also performed every president s favorite duty, inducting a new member: Sue Vogl, sponsored by Les Silverman..By the time you read this, Kent Caldwell will have led us in another round of Marriott golf, and Russ Rothner will have led a crew of drivers in the Rotary Grand Prix fundraiser. Meanwhile, Jordan Peister is looking for members to join a team of riders in the Tour de Pier..Norm Levin (yes, the Norm Levin who runs those videos for us meeting after meeting), pulled the white marble and cashed out $1574, which he promptly promised to donate to a club charity. (Aside: Did anyone else notice the energy in the room as Norm reached into the bag of marbles? There were countless audible murmurs urging him on. He s just that guy the guy you root for, because you ve seen his quiet and consistent contribution to all things Rotary.) Teamwork: The Power of Team President Kathleen closed the meeting with a Rotary video showing us how we make a difference. Sue Vogl obviously got the message, as she chose to join our club, where her personal service commitment will be multiplied by over 100 members, as part of a team in which the total is far greater than the sum of its parts. As we learned from the firefighters and scientists, it is all about teamwork, and this Manhattan Beach Rotary team adds to the total every week. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

A Little Bit About POLIOPLUS PolioPlus is Rotary s massive effort to eradicate poliomyelitis from the world. It is part of a global effort to protect the children from five other deadly diseases as well-the plus in PolioPlus.! Achieving eradication will be difficult (only one other disease, smallpox, has ever been eradicated) and expensive (estimated cost to the international community is nearly $2 billion. No other non-governmental organization ever has made a commitment of the scale of PolioPlus. Truly it may be considered the greatest humanitarian service the world has ever seen. Every Rotarian can share the pride of that achievement!

6 Jim Bowser Jim Bowser, 82, was born in Du Bois, Pennsylvania, a small town with a population of 10,000. His father struggled through the Great Depression working as a clothing store salesman, until World War II broke out and the government attached him to Rockwell, which made bomb boxes. He ended up working as a Personnel Manager for Rockwell. Jim was awarded a football scholarship to Westminster College in Pennsylvania. He played linebacker and center at a time when there were no facemasks and suffered through 4 broken noses during his career. In 1954, Jim was drafted and spent 2 years in the Army serving in Germany. After the military, he attended the University of Pittsburg and majored in marketing. He was married for the first time in 1957, and worked for 3 years at Rockwell in Pittsburg. They had two children, Brett and Brad. After his mother-in-law died in 1958, Jim and his wife moved to her hometown of Colorado Springs. Jim initially worked for his fatherin-law driving and hauling milk in a tanker truck. To get him out of this misery, Farmer s Insurance offered him a job as a car insurance risk manager for customers living in New Mexico. After 3 years underwriting insurance in Colorado Springs, he had an opportunity to purchase a Farmer s agency in Ft. Collins, and his family moved to this new city.

7 For the next 27 years, his business grew from 3000 to 48,000 accounts covering most of Northern Colorado to Wyoming. It was during this time, he divorced, eventually retired and sold his business. He enjoyed skiing with his kids and purchased his ski equipment from a woman named Susie, who had 4 ski shops in Northern Colorado and Wyoming. This was 1975 and 2 years later, Susie and Jim married. They took advantage of both retiring and began traveling the world. When they returned between travels, the Farmer s corporate office in Los Angeles offered him a position of Marketing Manager in California. For the next 5 ½ years, Jim was responsible for building Farmer s award-winning floats for the Rose Parade, the Rose Festival in Portland and the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. Jim and Susie s vagabond shoes were calling, so he retired again and they traveled for the next year. Upon their return to their home in Manhattan Village, they got bored and Susie wanted to open a coffee shop in Manhattan Beach. After 15 months of red tape from the MB Planning Department, they finally opened Bodacious Buns in 1990, next to Starbucks on Manhattan Beach Blvd. They bought a franchise, including the name and recipes, but unfortunately the original franchisee failed, while Jim and Susie s store thrived. This business required long hours, 7 days a week, and after 6 ½ years, they were exhausted and sold the business to someone that wanted to change it to a bagel shop. That business lasted 6 months before closing their doors. The site has gone through several failed businesses until the Sims family opened Simmzey s. Jim and Susie were again retired and were looking for volunteer opportunities to go along with their love for travel and movies. Jim joined Rotary in 1995 and has been an energetic and excellent member ever since. He also volunteers at the USO. A new chapter has begun for Jim, being diagnosed recently with pancreatic cancer. He is now trying to surround himself with his children, Brett (Seattle), Brad (Novato, CA) and Heather (Ft. Collins) and his 4 grandchildren. He and Susie are very appreciative of the support they are receiving from their Rotarian friends. It means a lot to them.
