3 Rotary is Service Above Self Dreams and Nightmares It was Monday, March 1, 2010, and the always ebullient President Jan Rhees led us into a week of serious socializing at Lisa Hemmat s Lido, first with Gordon Ramsey s Kitchen Nightmares on Thursday night and then with the Oscars on Sunday night..we sang Happy Birthday to David Peters, who then joined Larry Wolf in presenting $1500 to the Richstone Center, which has helped over 8000 children and families with counseling and child abuse prevention programs.and Rich Ham, our community service director, dropped another $1500 on the Botanical Gardens (David Harris long-time project), whose Gretchen Renshaw treated us to a brief slideshow of the birds and the bees.dictionary Man Charlie Steinmetz needs 9 or 10 folks for his March 16 deliveries, and gathered folks for March 2, 3 and 4. (Let Charlie know if you want to attend his foundation s dedication of a new school library at St. Lawrence Brindisi School in Watts, on March 10.)..As of this writing, you have seen President Jan being honored on March 3 by our City Council for her community service efforts.magic In Giving Guru Anne Konie pitched the silent and live auctions this week the indefatigable Mimi Haines is once again in charge. Partners for Pediatric Progress Lomita Rotary President Greg Becker brought us Dr. Lee Miller, a UCLA Professor of Pediatric Medicine, to present slides on his work with Partners for Pediatric Progress, his creation for the pursuit of an international public health program providing disadvantaged countries with training and resources for local health care workers and to introduce American medical students and medical residents to this work. (For example, he told us Mozambique has 10 pediatricians for a population of 10 million children.) He is working now in Maputo, Mozambique and Iquitos, Peru, with a goal of sustainable impact (I think of the old saying about not giving a man a fish but instead teaching him how to fish). He told us of his volunteer pediatric resident, Ryan, who saw 2-3 deaths in his entire UCLA residency and sees 2-3 per day in Africa.

6 Rotary is Service Above Self Craft Talk: Arturo Di Pietro Our craft talk this day was presented by Arturo Di Pietro, he of the irresistible Italian vintage, born in Naples and claiming as ancestor Marlon Brando s Godfather. At 21, he left Naples for Florence, where he hopped in a forklift and started a career in material handling. He expanded his sales territory to Tuscany and then, through a Spanish company in Milan, all of Italy. He then moved on to a role as a key account manager for Toyota, moved to beautiful Lucca, and finally to California, where his zest for Italian cooking has served him well. Now he s with the company System Logistics when he s not hanging out with his best friend, his English Labrador. Marital status? Well, it happens that just last week I attended a marvelous dine-around hosted by Patty and Roger Civalleri (Roger, by the way, was Arturo s Rotary sponsor). Arturo was there and was cross-examined by Patty. All I can tell you is that Arturo is single beyond that, he resisted even Patty s considerable charms and gave away nothing. Raffle We may have lost the Magic In Giving raffle, but we seem to be making up for it with the marble raffle. With the prize money..ratcheted up to $1100, President Jan added..12 more blue marbles to the marble bag...she may be shooting for another one..of those $10,000 prizes we ve all....coveted for so many years. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett
7 Rotary is Service Above Self Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help June keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make June's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! Rotary Make-Up Clubs - 12:15pm Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
