Mira Costa High School and Rotary exchange student AJ Silverman will talk about his experiences in Germany this past school year.

Rotary in Liberia It was Monday, August 22, 2016, and President Shannon Ryan led us off with Duke Winser sharing the timeless Prayer of St. Francis..We met Rachel Azafrani, a Mira Costa grad and Club scholarship recipient at Georgetown, now being assisted by Donn Ennis and Dave Boochever in applying for a Rotary Fellowship. She was fresh back from a Rotary meeting in Monrovia, Liberia..Jim Hunter passed around dine-around signups, and John Gardner passed around Richstone signups, while also encouraging attendance at the District annual literacy breakfast at Lawry s on September 8.

3 Club Service Jordan Holbert previewed upcoming club activities. September 14 is the member/significant other mixer at Lido. October 15 will feature a not-publicly-available Catalina Jeep tour. January will include Ingo Werk taking us to the Broad Museum. We will do a Soul Cycle spin class in December plus a Rose Bowl float decoration day. October 9 is the President s Reception and December 3 is the holiday party.

4 City Finance Bruce Moe Mark Burton introduced Bruce Moe, the City s Finance for 14 years (with the City since 1989). Bruce gave his typically articulate and power-packed presentation. He is a joyful and very accessible gentleman who obviously loves his City and loves his job. Donn Ennis posted all of his many slides on Facebook, and you should look at them if you missed the talk. I have pages of notes and cannot really do this talk justice. One of Bruce s favorite quotes: When it s bad out there, it s good here; when it s good out there, it s great here the point being that this City is always in either good or great financial shape. The slides outline our Tailwinds and Headwinds, our funding sources (including a fun list of our biggest sales tax providers), our expenses, and much more. Bruce repeatedly praised our dedicated and motivated workforce, and the City s encouragement of resident engagement.

5 Hard Knocks We are barely two months into President Shannon s tenure, and already President-Elect Mark Burton has hosted, at his home (with Chef Chris Ullman cooking), the club s past presidents to start planning for next year. A couple of things became clear at this meeting: President Shannon and her Board and committees are already giving Mark a very hard act to follow; and we have so much talent, energy and commitment in our membership that Mark will have quite a job selecting his Board for next year. The meeting felt like the Rams Hard Knocks, except that all the candidates were All-Pros. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

Get involved in your club, your community and your world through the opportunities offered by our Rotary club and Rotary International. Long-time Rotarians agree that involvement is the key. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, help out with weekly meetings, or as part of a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and understand what Rotary does. District 5280 also offers opportunities for you to get involved. Attend your district s conference to learn more about Rotary and celebrate the good works of your district. Host the visiting Group Study Exchange team or help organize the district s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program to see what clubs working together can do. These activities will help you meet Rotarians outside of your club, widening your circle of friends and expanding your service potential.
