3 Rotary is Service Above Self Presidential Thoughts It was Monday, April 25, 2011, and Magic In Giving was much on the minds of President Roger Cox and all in attendance. But first we heard the stentorian tones of Larry Johnson reciting George Washington s favorite prayer (no doubt President Washington would have endorsed Magic In Giving) and then greeted two member relatives: Rick and Monica Farrell s son/brother Ryan and Richard Ackerman s daughter Stephanie. Wade Austin brought back from Belgium a t- shirt for Chris Ullman ( I love bad girls ), and Lindy Murrell was off to Argentina to see husband Roger try to help New Zealand win the Free Flight (model planes) World Championship. (Yes, we have two Kiwi Rogers connected to our club our president and Lindy s husband.) Golf Hotshots The Manhattan Beach Rotary Masters Par-3 Tournament has come and gone, won by co-leaders Kent Caldwell and Bill Sauber. (President Roger kept his word and gave the club foundation $60, calculated as $5 per stroke over par.patty Panucci received her blue badge and joyously heaved her red badge across the room..russ Samuels and John Osten gave us Magic In Giving pep talks (the general theme was open your checkbooks and enjoy doing it ).One person who has opened his checkbook repeatedly (not to mention vast amounts of time contributed to the club) is Donn Ennis, in recognition of which Bill Bloomfield handed him a PH + 4..There was an unfilled opening to deliver Meals on Wheels this date, and Kent Caldwell raised his hand to cover it. No glory. Just doing the job when no one else would or could. Desert Hot Spots Our speaker was Keely McGeehan, here for a return engagement to share more slides of her projects in Mali. Thanks to former club member Aliyah Levin and many others, our club produced a $59,400 grant to her group ( including matches from other Rotary clubs and funds. Keely thanked us for working with her since 2008 and wanted us to see some results. Her vision is to establish K-12 schools and create learning enhancing solutions in remote villages in Mali and the Sahara Desert. She now has K-6 established in multiple

Her group provides basic needs clean water, solar, lighting, and sanitation, using appropriate technology and engineering to enhance sustainability. She showed us completed walls and millet centers and so much more. Results indeed. As our golf champions wriggled in and out of the infamous green sweater, I thought of the PGA Tour slogan, which applies to so many members of the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club: These guys [and gals] are good. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett MB Rotary and Mira Costa at Finance Park This year for the first time, Kathleen Adams, Monica Farrell and Kathleen Terry are planning a mentoring opportunity where our club will take Seniors at Mira Costa to Finance Park to learn about financial literacy.this will be a great mentoring day so we hope we will get a large number of Rotarians who can find the time to participate. Contact Kathleen Terry for more information.
