GrowingGreat is a nonprofit school garden and nutrition education organization dedicated to inspiring children and adults to adopt healthy eating habits and it is based right here in Manhattan Beach. June 18 Craft Talk and Police Awards. This morning we will hear a Craft Talk from Mark Lipps and give out the Annual MB Police Awards to the department s finest. June 25 Craft Talk and Fire Awards. The Annual Fire Award is bestowed today along with a Craft Talk from Jason Wallace. July 2 Independence Day. There is no regular scheduled meeting this morning as we observe the July 4th holiday. Save The Date June 24 War Horse. Manhattan Beach Rotary goes to the Ahmanson. We have a group attending the Sunday Matinee at 1:00. Please call Lee Walker for more information. June 30 Demotion. Our fond farewell to President Bill as he ends his term as president of our club.

3 Rotary is Service Above Self Teachers of the Year It was Monday, June 4, 2012, the day before a full moon, and President Bill Bloomfield called upon Doug Wrone for the thought of the day, which turned out to be a strange brew of Van Halen and Gracie Allen, which led President Bill to wonder why Noah didn t swat those two mosquitoes. We greeted guests including next year s District Governor Elect, Jim Dyer, and a past club president from Colombia, Carlos Ponce, and then President Bill mercifully turned the podium over to Robin Gary, who kicked off our annual Teacher Awards. A wondrous assortment of Manhattan Beach school principals presented awards to an even more wondrous assortment of remarkable teachers, capped by Mira Costa Principal Ben Dale (newly awarded a doctorate), who interrupted the proceedings by promising to vote for President Bill if it will stop the media onslaught. Dr. Dale pretty thoroughly roasted our president, thereby making the upcoming demotion superfluous, and then presented the entire MBUSD s choice for Teacher of the Year, Linda Gesualdi. Ms. Gesualdi told us of her student who, when she admitted she was herself stuck on a math problem (which the student had figured out), suggested that she solve the problem by doing what she had taught her students to do. It s hard to imagine a better compliment from a student. (MIA was Mike Matthews, busy in Washington D.C. helping Grandview accept one of only 78 national Green Ribbon School awards.) Growing Members and Dollars President Bill had the honor of inducting three new members at once (a club record, I m certain): Fire Chief Bob Espinosa, sponsored by Les Silverman (by the way, Bob is a second cousin of Richard Ackerman); Jim Lambert, a computer consultant sponsored by Gerry Morton; and David Vialpando, a plumber sponsored by Steve Murillo. (Rumor has it that this three-inductee record is soon to be broken.).torrance Rotarian Katie Gleason (formerly a member of our club) thanked us for our contribution to 10 El Camino College scholarships (we kicked in $500 each, and the school s foundation matched all ten awards). Other South Bay Rotary clubs made an additional scholarships possible..president Bill thanked

4 Rotary is Service Above Self Mike Doell for wielding the gavel at our last meeting and again acknowledged Lincoln Stone, who gave our foundation $100 for each of his 25 years of marriage. Hoping to start a new tradition, President Bill reminded Russ Samuels of his 5th wedding anniversary, and got $10 per year in return. (And yes, $50 is truly generous too.) Happy Dollars Steve Stepanek randomly encountered Kathleen Terry on the streets of Paris and then came home to his daughter s wedding in Mammoth..Larry Johnson organized, for the 4th time this Rotary year, a gourmet dinner (Magic In Giving fundraiser), assisted this round by Jan Rhees, Matt Peck, Ingo Werk, Ian Jackson, Paul Allman, Jordan Peister, and assorted spouses..jim Hunter received on behalf of our club the District s Rotary Foundation Service Award. Jim told us that our club gave more per capita than any club in the District.Tom Jeffry s adopted daughter, Tina Barraza, graduated summa cum laude from Northern Arizona University.. Norm Levin s daughter is getting married this summer..john Van den Akker is bringing our Russian visitors to the next meeting, so be on the look-out and make them feel at home. Changing Lives President Bill is finishing his year with a weekly quote from club members about what Rotary means to them. For Anne Konie, it s simple: Rotary is life changing.
