3 Rotary is Service Above Self On With The Show To those passing in the hallway of the Marriott, it probably sounded like songbirds in the throes of spring. In fact it was the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club joining in the pledge of allegiance to start of Monday s meeting. Jordan Peister delivered a quote from a recently deceased coach John Wooden, who had passed the Friday before at the far too early age of 99. Coach Wooden had said Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." It was a fine quote, delivered by a fine new Rotarian, and originating from a great human being. There were five guests at Monday s meeting, which included a visitor from the Omaharti, Japan Rotary Club, Keith Deisenroth, and John Cameron from the Palos Verdes Club, Ken Deemer, a new prospective member, and Sandi Ross. Anniversaries, Birthdays, More Anniversaries Celebrating his birthday somewhere other than at our Rotary meeting was Brad Koppel. Happy birthday anyway Brad. Jim and Joanne Hunter celebrated their wedding anniversary on June 8th. Congratulations to them both. Russ and Sondra Samuels celebrated their wedding anniversary on June 9. Congratulations to them as well. Bill Sauber celebrated his 18th club anniversary on June 8. Larry Johnson celebrated his 8th club anniversary on June 10. Jim Bowser has been with our club for 5 years as of the 13th of this month. Roger Cox, our soon to be president, has now been with the club for 4 years as of June 12. You would think that by now we would be able to understand something he says. Jackson on Sports Ian Jackson delivered another fine sports report. The biggest news story in sports was of course the loss of legendary John Wooden. Ian quoted coach Wooden who said Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. At the time of the report, the Lakers had just lost game 2 of the NBA finals, at home to Boston. Since that time the Lakers have regained home court advantage by taking game 3 at Boston. By the time this is published this series may almost be over. The UCLA Bruin Women softball finals v. Arizona resulted in the women of UCLA picking up their record 12th national championship. Congratulations to the Bruin softball team.

6 Rotary is Service Above Self Finally Paul Sanchez finally received his blue badge after over a year of trying. While it may have taken Paul a bit longer than a year, his journey included significant contributions as a Rotarian. Happy Dollars Randy Meadors is no longer the Director for Healthcare Infrastructure with the firm of c a Architects. John Hugunin gave special thanks for all of the Interact awards that were given out the previous week s meeting. Charlie Steinmetz gave a special thanks to the success of his dinner which told all of the mysteries of Troy. Apparently some folks tried to sneak into the dinner inside a wooden horse. Les Silverman gave thanks for his 13 year old daughter s bat mitzvah, and becoming a MB parking and improvements commissioner. Lincoln Stone gave congratulations to his daughter, who graduated from Boston University. Wade Austin gave thanks that his wife Wanda will be the keynote speaker at the El Camino graduation. Morning Havoc (TV) Ryan Kresser gave a great presentation on Havoc TV. Ryan, who works for Havoc, which is a multi-platform network, on Directv and the internet. Viewers of Havoc can send in texts and make immediate choices for what is being aired. In essence, the viewers have control over what they watch. The Havoc website is fully functional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ryan also spoke about Ultimate Wave, which is a surf Imax starring Kelly Slater, best surfer in the history of the world. Ultimate wave was a marriage of K2 and Havoc, K2 being a sponsor of Havoc, and in the business of creating Imax films. Suzuki wanted to own surfing, and approached Havoc about how to do it. The Imax Ultimate Wave was created to give that ability to Suzuki. Since this Imax is aired in museums and other educational venues, it was given a necessary educational component. Many Rotarians that have already seen this film have said how great it truly is. In other words, 4 out of 5 Rotarians recommend taking your kids to see it. The remaining Rotarian says leave your kids at home and go see it yourself.
7 Rotary is Service Above Self Kevin Barry Also speaking was Kevin Barry, a local business owner, that many may know from Memphis, or Sangria. Memphis is located in downtown Manhattan Beach next to Subway, and used to be Towne, which Kevin was also an owner of. Kevin started in the restaurant business in the 80s, when a group of his friends opened 12th street, which has since changed owners and names many times over. The restaurant business is Kevin s primary business area. Kevin attempts to do as many philanthropic events as he can at his restaurants. Kevin spoke about his experience surfing all over the world, including with Kelly Slater at Tavarua. Tavarua is known as one of the greatest surf destinations in the world. It is a very small island which can be circumvented in approximately 15 minutes on foot, and is located off the coast of Fiji. Kevin is committed to many jobs and activities, including teaching Junior Lifeguards at Marine. Kevin has been teaching these junior guards for many years, and absolutely loves teaching them the concept of helping others. Kevin has been lifeguarding since he finished college and has been a hero to many in the water and the community. In fact, Kevin was honored for saving 2 women caught in riptide last summer. Kevin was off duty on his surfboard, and pulled in two women on the edge of drowning, out of the water. Kevin even told the story of a young boy he had saved years ago, that became a lifeguard, water polo player, and doctor. This young man later met Kevin, and expressed the impact Kevin had on his life. Kevin also serves on the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation. The Foundation is centered on using ocean therapy program to help people with mental and emotional issues. This includes work with the wounded warrior battalion. Kevin told a story of a wounded warrior that couldn t find anything to help his emotional problems until he found surfing through the Foundation, this same warrior was overwhelmed with the effect that surfing had on him. Kevin also serves on the dig for kids foundation, which works with the importance of education for underprivileged children. This program allows these children to interact with the beach and the
8 Rotary is Service Above Self beach community, and provides them with great opportunities to expand their worlds. Kevin is also part of the Manhattan Beach Business and Professionals Association, which supports local businesses, and strives to have people support local businesses in their community. Close... But No Cigar Bill Bloomfield, who purchased almost all the raffle tickets at the meeting, was the proud winner of a lovely bottle of wine. The big money is still out there for the next meeting, and with only 2 balls left for drawing, the approximately $2, is up for grabs.
