Manhattan Beach Rotary Club Serving Manhattan Beach Since 1950 Club No. 751 District 5280 Chartered August 9, District Governor Doug Baker Visits Club August 12 was the date for the annual District Governor visit to our club. Governor Doug comes from the Rotary Club of Downey. Governor Doug talked about how Rotary is extending its reach throughout the Los Angeles Region, drawing a new and younger generation of enthusiastic leaders. Doug is serving a second term after the passing of DG Elect Jim Dyer. Our district has 66 clubs in the greater LA area. We promise we will not give credence to reports from LA5 that a recent informal survey in Downey revealed that few even remember him having served as Club President and that Doug had an inexpensive face lift in addition to having his teeth whitened in preparation for his club visits. A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. Sir Francis Bacon TODAY S PROGRAM Aug 19 The Latest Trends in Global Design. Rob Jernigan, AIA Regional Managing Principal & Board Member, Gensler will speak this morning.

Entourage It was Monday, August 12, 2013, and President Kathleen Terry had some very special guests for us, including District Governor Doug Baker (our speaker on his official visit to our club), Executive Aide Jaimee Sul Cantrell, Club Assistant Governor David Bohn, and District Governor-Elect Elsa Gillham (from Wilshire Rotary). It was an honor for our president and our club to have this assemblage with us--governor Doug told us that, as a repeat DG standing in for the unexpectedly deceased Jim Dyer, he was sharing official club visits with other prior DGs. Governor Doug had his choice of 5-6 clubs, and we were one he chose, with his full entourage in tow. Rototacos Deb Robertson cautioned us to slow down and appreciate each day...50 club members, spouses and friends showed up for the Beatles tribute at Concerts in the Park, with Chris Ullman and Harris Bass showing up early to save spots...11 club members joined Kent Caldwell s last club golf outing...steve DeBaets was appointed to the Manhattan Beach Senior Advisory Commission...And the same Steve DeBaets has stepped up once again to lead our club booth at the Hometown Fair, this time replacing Rotoburgers with Rototacos (Rotocokes presumably still to be available) club members were climbing Mt. Whitney as we met. Intrepid Rotarian Travellers at Mt. Whitney.

Operations Management Dennis Morehead has long led our scholarship committee and took some time at today s meeting to introduce Allen Hoa, a Costa grad studying Operations Management at USC. John Van den Akker reminded us that the godfather of Operations Management has been the now retired Dick Chase. RI Foundation Paul Allman, back from surgery and looking good, took one last take as our RI Foundation Chair, presenting Paul Harris+ awards to presidential contributors Kathleen Terry and Tom Jeffry--but not until we saw their baby pictures, saw them on the cover of Time Magazine, and finally saw them as Superman and Wonder Woman. Paul also gave us some numbers: RI has facilitated two billion polio vaccines, has prevented an estimated 500,000 cases of polio per year, and received a $250 million matching grant from the Gates Foundation when we met their challenge to raise an additional $200 million. Welcome, Mark Burton District Governor Doug Baker, promising to talk real slow so that the UCLA alums present could keep up, swore in Mark Burton with an extended (and excellent) oath, with Mark s sponsor Roger Cox standing by. Governor Doug (who owns Open Sesame in Manhattan Beach and comes from the Downey club) went on to give an informative, entertaining, and downright laugh-out-loud talk. (I probably shouldn t repeat the Henry Waxman-Bill Bloomfield joke that brought down the house.) District Governor Doug Baker Governor Doug praised us as a club that maintains high Rotary standards. In a time when North America and District 5280 Rotary membership is down, ours is up--and our attendance is up as well. The key, he suggested, to club success is to be more than meet and eat and write checks. Participation in service is what attracts and keeps members. Comparing Rotary to a franchise business, he said that every club has to be an example of Rotary at its best--otherwise, the whole operation gets a bad reputation. He told us that the man who brought him out

of depression (with Rotary and beyond), and who really showed him Rotary s power for good, said, as he lay dying, Cherish the memories that you don t know you re getting. Club Standards Governor Doug was as well received by this club as any DG I ve seen in my 30+ years in the club. (The last one received with this much enthusiasm joined our club!) His knack for mixing humor with personal candor and Rotary commitment is a reflection of who we are and why we succeed as a club. To top it off, President Kathleen gave him a gift of some of the best our club has to offer: the writings of two of our (many) star members--the books Corporate Gardner, by Paul Allman, and Customer Service Solution, by Dick Chase. Thank you, Governor Doug, for entertaing us, for teaching us, for inspiring us, and for renewing our commitment to Rotary standards. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the quiet revolution of hope. Isn t it time for you to: Reach out to someone who needs help. Develop a relationship with a club in another country. Become acquainted with customs and culture of a faraway place.

Baby Goldbergs Arrived! Debbie and Damien welcomed twins this weekend! Harrison & Elliot were born on Saturday, 8/10, weighing 3lbs 8oz and 3lbs 4oz. The twins, Debbie, Damien and big brother Asher are all doing well and excited about their new family of 5.

Did You Know? We Give Micro Loans Through Kiva This is the sixth year our club has been making micro loans through out the world. We use Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the Internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world. They were founded in 2005 and have facilitated $460,554,425 in loans to 1,099,697 people. They have a repayment rate of 98.99%. Our club currently has an outstanding portfolio of $14,000 in micro loans. When a loan is paid back we then loan the money to another person. Through this process our $14,000 has financed $85,450 in loans to 885 people. We have loans in 45 different countries with Agriculture, Retail and Food being the top three sectors that we finance. Of the 885 loans we have only 4 have defaulted. This has resulted in a repayment rate of 99.81%. This has been a great way to leverage the club s money to help fund opportunities worldwide. For more information talk to Donn Ennis.
