1 Manhattan Beach Rotary Club Serving Manhattan Beach Since 1950 Club No. 751 District 5280 Chartered August 9, Rotarians High on Mt. Whitney Monday, August 19 s meeting had a new first. We were treated with a video of 4 ragged-looking Rotarians, who just completed their hike to the top of Mt. Whitney, when they rolled out the American flag and proceeded to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Those looking down on us from 14,500 feet were Les Silverman, Dave Harris, Gerry Morton and Mark Lipps. Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance. Shakespeare TODAY S PROGRAM Aug 26 Torrance Memorial Hospital. Craig Leach will speak about how Torrance Memorial Hospital contributes to our community.

2 Programs Sept 2 Labor Day. We are this morning in observance of the Labor Day Holiday. Enjoy the long weekend with family and friends and travel safely. Sept 9 Rotary Myanmar Project. J.T. Warring will speak. Involvement Opportunities Aug 26 MB Rotary Book Club Planning Meeting. A brief (20 minutes) organizing meeting is scheduled immediately after our Monday meeting. Over 15 MB Rotary members have expressed an interest in organizing a Book Club. The committee will decide types of books to include (fiction and/or non-fiction) and frequency of meetings to discuss the books we read. Sept 4 Operation Teddy Bear. Backpack distribution and reading at William Green Elementary in Lawndale at 8:30am. For more information see Dennis Ridge. Sept 11 Operation Teddy Bear. Rotarians Busy as we Head into Fall President Terry introduced 2 special guests, Steve Jarvis, who will be transferring to our Club from LA 5 and Dave Gendrow, who is being sponsored by Doug Wroan. Then Doug turned around and told us his family is moving to Rolling Hills Estates and he will be joining a Club in the PV area. Thanks for all you have done for our Club and we wish you well. Dr. Damian Goldberg proudly showed us pictures of his new twin sons. Steve DeBaets, donning a sombrero and sarape, informed us that we will have a booth in the upcoming Hometown Fair selling tacos. If anyone is interested in working Friday afternoon, Saturday or Sunday (October 4 6), please let Steve know. Under the Club Service direction, they are presenting their first Travels with Charlie on September 15. Charlie Steinmetz and Lisa Hemmat will be leading interested Rotarians (and spouses, etc.) on a special behind the scenes tour of the Huntington Library, featuring a special collection on Junipero Serra. They plan on traveling by bus, so anyone interest should contact either Lisa or Charlie (cost $35 per person). Next Amanda Stone introduced us to our new Rotary Facebook page, which has been encouraged by RI as an avenue to tell the Rotary story worldwide. I actually think it s a plot by Generation Y ers to show how ignorant the Baby Boomers are with our computer ineptness. We have all been instructed to go to and review all the options of photos, calendars, events and a timeline of our Club and then press Like, even if we don t want to bother. For those Rotarians that showed some interest in forming a Book Club, John Hugunin will be holding a meeting after next Monday s meeting (Aug 26). Whew, the announcements were finally over and President Terry reclaimed the microphone. She recognized Kathleen Adams and Shannon Ryan for being featured in South Bay magazine as attractive

4 Financial Planners where were the men (Acker, Castellani, Harris)? Anyway, Shannon was fined for no Rotary pin, while Kathleen wore hers proudly. The same thing happened in South Bay Digs Magazine, where Lisa Hemmat was featured, but alas, no Rotary pin. Dan Quisenberry got into the act and fined himself, but I have no idea why and by that time nobody cared. Rotarian Art & Architecture Gensler Style Les Silverman introduced our speaker, Rob Jernigan of Gensler Architecture, one of the world s largest architectural firms and largest in Southern California. He gave us a presentation of Trends in Global Design, showing off their projects in Shanghai, London, Egypt, Dubai and right here at home. They designed Arc Light Theaters, LA Live and, if LA ever gets a professional football team, they will design Farmer s Field. It was an interesting presentation by an individual that up to speed on what s happening internationally. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hunter How Well Do You Know Your Piers? 5 Did You Know? We Give Micro Loans Through Kiva This is the sixth year our club has been making micro loans through out the world. We use Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the Internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world. They were founded in 2005 and have facilitated $460,554,425 in loans to 1,099,697 people. They have a repayment rate of 98.99%. Our club currently has an outstanding portfolio of $14,000 in micro loans. When a loan is paid back we then loan the money to another person. Through this process our $14,000 has financed $85,450 in loans to 885 people. We have loans in 45 different countries with Agriculture, Retail and Food being the top three sectors that we finance. Of the 885 loans we have only 4 have defaulted. This has resulted in a repayment rate of 99.81%. This has been a great way to leverage the club s money to help fund opportunities worldwide. 6 This Year s Focus of International Service We support the main Rotary International campaigns for literacy, sanitation, women's health and childcare. We currently are working to build relations in four geographic areas: Columbia and Argentina for sanitation and health Guatemala for literacy and sanitation Mexico for orphan child care Africa for wells and women's education Rotary International funds are seen as supporting an incubator of ideas that need start up funding and administrative oversight. The projects that we support need to show they are able to become selfsustaining. We seek to be project leaders and innovators. Projects will be surveyed for general compliance to: 1. Demonstrate the Rotary connection to the project. 2. Demonstrate how the goals of Rotary are being met. 3. Demonstrate how the project will sustain after Rotary. 4. Demonstrate the value return of the money invested.
