1 Verandas Beach House 401 Rosecrans Avenue, Manhattan Beach CA :15 AM Major Donor Wade Austin Courage It was Monday, December 11, 2017, and President Mark Burton presided while Bill Bloomfield quoted Eric Sevareid ( The prime virtue is courage ) and while John Osten led us in a moment of silence for those who have lost their homes in the fires Former member and now Tehachapi Rotarian Patrick Donahue was in the house..mark Lipps led the month s birthday celebrants in a round (literally a round) of Happy Birthday..President Mark reported on the delivery of gifts to the Richstone kids and on our work for the Sandpipers holiday boutique And President Mark recognized David Boochever, Charlie Steinmetz and Jim Lambert for their major contributions to the Rachel Parker Scholarship Fund. Major Donor Wade Austin Is Quite A Fellow David Peters in turn recognized new Paul Harris Fellows (we didn t get all the plusses down, so I report only the ones I got): Eric Iverson +1, Dan Jensen, Kathleen Adams +2, Nelson Gray +1, Tim Auringer, Dick Chase, Lee Walker +4, Gerry Morton +6, and..drum roll..wade Austin, +9, which makes him a Major Donor (I asked him if Wanda knows about this; if she reads the Bulletin, she does now). Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime. Laura Ingalls Wilder Today s Program Holiday Music and Art - Virginia Vilchis discusses her Spreading the Love display at Metlox Plaza, Paul Allman leads us in song and Mark Burton shares his thoughts for the season. 2 ************************************************************************************** Rotary International Foundation Paul Harris Recognition Crutches 4 Africa Bob Lanahan is seeking a club member to volunteer to collect mobility devices as part of the District s new project, Crutches 4 Africa. Ed Kushins has volunteered to be the lead on this project. Contact Ed if you have crutches or other devices to donate. Here Comes The Sun Joel Ruben organized a benefit concert featuring guitarist Felix Kellaway, who treated us at our meeting to two pieces, a classical Spanish guitar solo and his rendition of Here Comes The Sun. The concert raised funds for the Sandy Casey fund Sandy is the Las Vegas gun victim who was a special ed teacher at MBMS. Joel s concert raised over $2500. Felix does these benefits a lot 50 so far for Rotary in the U.S., Europe and South America. Welcome Brendan Harrington and Bruce Greenspon Deb Robertson announced we have raised $20K for the Puerto Rico Water Purification Project. She will provide a thorough update at a January meeting..ian Jackson and President Mark inducted two new members: Brendan Harrington, sponsored by Marc Castellani, and Bruce Greenspon, sponsored by Ken Deemer..Wade Austin advised us that December 15 was the deadline to register for the Toronto RI Convention before prices rise. Club Finances Geoff Bremer, Jim Hunter and David Boochever have organized our new Permanent Restricted Fund, with invaluable assistance from Gerry Morton s wife Mercedes, and Geoff did a refreshingly coherent job of explaining club finances to us. It all comes down to Club finances versus Club Foundation finances (activities as distinct from service). Our Foundation Board currently consists of elected members Ian Jackson, Bob Stephenson, Mike Doell, and Geoff Bremer, plus Immediate Past President Shannon Ryan. Foundation funding comes primarily from Celebrate Manhattan Beach and donations of cash, securities and property. Page 2

3 Foundation Funds The Manhattan Beach Rotary Foundation includes various segregated funds. We have the Unrestricted Service Fund for annual projects. We have Board-designated special service funds for directed gifts, such as our current Niger and Puerto Rico projects. And we have the Restricted Fund, which is essentially an endowment, which, at designated thresholds of asset value, can be partially shifted to current projects. Endowment Past President Geoff Bremer has high expectations for the endowment, which will be a new line item on our next dues statements. His goal is $1 million by (He, and we, might just do it. MBEF started at $70K when Geoff joined and, under his guidance, has grown to $15 million.) This Fund is a 501c3 corporation, tax free, managed by Farmers & Merchants Bank. Its purpose is to build a legacy to smooth over future rough times. It now sits at $362K. We will have recognition levels for supporters up to $10K, and members can become Club Benefactors by providing a minimum $10K in a will or trust. Funding Service It is the combination of money and service that makes our club s projects so effective. It is good to be reminded occasionally of how the money side is being handled. This is quiet, detailed, often unrecognized work done by a handful of our club members, all made possible by the generous contributions of far more than a handful of giving members. With gratitude to all these people, it is also good to have this chance to hear from and recognize Past President Geoff Bremer, who has for decades spearheaded so much of this work for Manhattan Beach students and Manhattan Beach Rotary.
