Les invited Gary to take the chance to tell us about Team Heal ( his organization that provides athletic trainers to local high schools as well as scholarships to local scholar-athletes (contact Gary or Les for more information). Los Angeles Conservation Corps It was Monday, July 14, 2014, and President Geoff Bremer inexplicably ignored Bastille Day, instead allowing Mark Ballance to earn his blue badge by telling jokes that qualified as groaners that President Geoff would enjoy..president Geoff then led us in a merry Lakers trivia contest in honor of our guest speaker..gerry Morton admitted that it is indeed his wife, Mercedes Morton, who is peering out at us from billboards on the 405, wearing eyeblack with the slogan, We Are Banc of California, The Official Bank of USC Athletics. It turns out that Stanford Law grad Mercedes is not only a lawyer but is also the President of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC). LACC, supported in part by Banc of California, is an organization providing at-risk youth opportunities for success through job skill training, education and work experience in conservation and service..meanwhile, Chef Meg Hall was chopped on Chopped, but she looked good doing it.

3 Gary Vitti An athletic trainer is a jack of all trades, master of none so he works with many different doctors. His first job is prevention. Injuries require acute care, usually ice and compression. (He calls it veterinary medicine, given the quality of the injury history he often gets from his patients, but with the Lakers he has the advantage of immediate high-definition video.) Chronic care involves the entire kinetic chain wherein one injury affects everything else. Nutrition is obviously important the Lakers shop Whole Foods often. Today s pro athletes are so competitive that they are usually performing on the razor edge between in-control and out-of-control, and that s where injuries happen. In the NBA, Europeans are fundamentally sound, South Americans are tough, and Americans are athletic and tough but not so big on fundamentals. Much like former club member Steve Lombardo told us a couple years ago, the ideal is superstar Kobe Bryant, who may be a difficult personality but shines on all three criteria athletic, tough, and fundamentally sound. Plus he s hyper-competitive and the hardest worker I ever met. Superstars So what are the criteria for a superstar Rotarian? We could start with non-rotarian Mercedes Morton, and add last year s Rotarian of the Year Shannon Ryan. Let s see hard-working, committed to service, natural leaders. Yep, they qualify. Oh, and good-looking women. Yes, definitely that. I hereby declare them our first of many superstars. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

Become more than a member of your Rotary club, become a Rotarian. Host the visiting Group Study Exchange team or help organize the district s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program to see what clubs working together can do. These activities will help you meet Rotarians outside of your club, widening your circle of friends and expanding your service potential.

6 What Constitutes a Make Up Rotary Meeting Activities (main focus is on Rotary, more formal, usually with an agenda or speaker) regularly announced intercity meeting of Rotary clubs attend a regular meeting of a Rotaract or Interact club a Rotary district or international conference, convention, or district assembly Board meeting of another Rotary Club any district meeting held by direction of the board of directors of RI, any district committee meeting held by direction of the district governor, or District sponsored meeting participate through a club web site in an interactive activity requiring an average of 30 minutes of participation. Service Activities (main focus is on helping and improving the community) attends and participates in a club service project or a club-sponsored community event or meeting authorized by the board such as a: Hands on service project, delivering meals on wheels and Hometown Fair.
