3 Rotary is Service Above Self Remembering Heroes It was Monday, September 14, 2009 and the meeting was called to order by President Jan Rhees who introduced MB Police Chief Rod Uyeda who led our members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our thought for the day was provided by MB Fire Chief Scott Ferguson. Scott took a few moments to reflect upon the enormous sacrifice so many firefighters gave on the attacks of He also mentioned the loss of the 2 firefighters in the "Station Fire" and how they died trying to clear a safe exit for 16 other firefighters. As Scott discussed those heroic efforts, he then brought it closer to home by sharing with us his experiences at a firefighters training class he attended in Arizona. He shared with us the intense training of these individuals and then told us that many of the attendees are normal citizens who provide firefighting protection as part of volunteer fire departments. Clearly we owe so much to our public safety professional and volunteers who put their lives on the line to protect us each and every day. Happy Dollars Happy dollars for this Monday were supplied by Dr. Ray Padilla who got national TV exposure during the UCLA-Tennessee football game this past Saturday. It was wise for Ray to do happy dollars versus getting a fine for not having on his Rotary Pin. Kent Caldwell (an avid USC Graduate) put up $20 to congratulate (jinx) UCLA!! Ray Padilla again for his son who attends USC betting his roommates that UCLA would beat Tennessee and winning enough to cover his college tuition for 3 days!!!! Dave Peters who attended the USC- OSU game at the Horseshoe with some friends had happy dollars for the USC victory and getting out of the stadium without any bodily harm! Barbara Matles thanked Tom Jeffry for organizing the club s dinner and play (Spamalot). The Club received club flags from the Phillipines (Roger Cox) and Hilo, Hawaii (Don Jung). Megan Hall was glad to be back at Rotary meetings after a summer of early Mondays at work. Rod Uyeda s son again made the Kings junior travel squad, which just won a tournament championship in which Rod s son allowed only one goal in four games. Chris Ullman thanked Larry Wolf for hosting the President s Reception and Lisa Hemmat

6 Rotary is Service Above Self for catering it. And Robin Thormosgaard attended the Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies where Rutgers Coach Vivian Stringer and four nondescript men (Jordan, Stockton, Sloan, Robinson) were honored, with Robin getting even more TV time than Ray Padilla. Sports Report Ian Jackson has been updating us weekly on sports. This week (don t worry, not every week) we summarize: Derek Jeter passed Lou Gehrig as the NY Yankees all time base hit leader. Jeter singled to pass Lou Gehrigs existing record of 2,722 base hits. Jeter is a true role model for how a professional athlete should perform on and off the field. Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the U.S. Open as a wild card entry. Kim who had retired from professional tennis to start a family won the final over Carolina Wosniaki of Denmark. Tiger Woods who had struggled over the past 4 tournaments shot an 8 under par 62 on Saturday and cruised to a 9 shot margin to win the BMW Challenge at Cog Hill golf course outside of Chicago. Tiger now moves into the points lead for the FedEx cup with the final tournament for the top 30 golfers taking place in Atlanta in two weeks. Lastly, both UCLA and USC were victorious over the weekend. Dick Ackerman spoke to the manner in which the Trojan's travelled into a hostile environment in Columbus Ohio and beat Ohio State. A great effort by the Cardinal and Gold. Our own Dr. Ray Padilla extolled the excitement that UCLA and its players felt when they were victorious against Tennessee at Knoxville. One had never seen that much Orange in one place at one time. Dr. Ray then explained the severity of the injury suffered by UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince who has a broken jaw and will be out for 3-4 weeks. International Service We heard from International Service Chair Donn Ennis, who summarized his own presentation as follows: We have four International Service programs and eighteen projects. These are all summarized on the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach s web site. We have one matching grant approved. This is a grant for solar, water and sanitation at two schools in Mali, Africa. We are waiting for the funds from RI and will then start construction...we have submitted three matching grants for this year. Thanks in large part to matchmaker
7 Rotary is Service Above Self extraordinaire Aliyah Levin. We are still not sure if they will be approved. The details are on our website...right now we have $4675 out in microloans to 54 businesses, with no defaults so far and just a couple of delinquencies...some club travel to check on our international activities is upcoming, from Ecuador to Ensenada to wherever a service project may lead us. If you are interested in going contact Donn Ennis or Vinny Fazzino. Charitable After International Director Donn Ennis completed his thorough and enlightening presentation on our Club's International Avenue of Service and the many projects we are involved in our own Rotary Foundation Chair David Boochever gave us a state of the art "Green Non Power Point presentation on how the RI Foundation really works. Dave explained with outstanding graphics (flip chart and marking pen) that our club is organized as a non profit 501c4 (meaning club income in not taxed, although individual contributions to the club are not charitable tax deductions), and our club foundation is organized as a nonprofit 501c3 (meaning foundation income is not taxed and individual contributions to the club are charitable tax deductions) so that the funds we raise during events such as Magic in Giving can be distributed to our many projects without having a tax liability. Dave noted that the RI foundation funded approximately 50 Million dollars in matching grant funds last year, all of which was made possible because of the donations to the RI Foundation by Clubs and members such as ours. (RI Foundation endowment income alone produces $8 million per year!) Dave did an excellent job of taking us through the various ways in which we as members of Rotary can contribute to the RI Foundation and receive recognition in the form of being a Paul Harris Fellow, a benefactor, Major Donor. Lastly Dave took the time to explain to us how our club has its own endowment and how our members can contribute to that fund to provide our club funds to continue our projects should our fundraising efforts come through MIG and other events come up a little bit short of our yearly average. Clearly, our members donations to the RI Foundation and to the MB Endowment are the lifeline that sustains our many worthwhile and life changing projects.
8 Rotary is Service Above Self 42 Years It s exhausting just to read about all these projects, and they are but a small portion of what this Club is doing week in, week out. Which makes it all the more remarkable that John Rhind has been doing this for 42 years. Don t ever leave us, John. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett (including the collected works of Ian Jackson and Donn Ennis). It s Time To Pay Your Dues Each Rotarian by now should have received their annual dues statement for the Rotary year. Thank you to the 40% of the club that has already paid their dues. If you haven't, please give this matter your attention. Dues may be mailed in to the Club's post office box or handed in at the Monday morning meetings. There is an annual pre-pay option for breakfast for those members who wish to take advantage of this convenience. Please note that payments from last year do not roll into the current year. If you wish to use this option please remit payment, or notify Matt Peck our Treasurer, so that our records are current. Lastly, as a reminder, each member (other than those who do the annual pre-pay) who attends a Monday meeting is expected to pay at least $5 at the door. Those members wishing to partake of the bountiful Marriott breakfast buffet pay $10. Lastly, tickets for our award winning raffle are $2. Please remember to stop at the Treasurer's desk when you arrive on Monday mornings so that each member pays their fair share.
