James O Callaghan, President of the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce will join us this morning. e are Dark this morning. Jim will talk to us about the state of local business in Manhattan Beach and projections going forward in As the new president of the Chamber he can also address what is new and improved about the current Chamber. 3 Deck Them Halls - December 17th The morning began with a warm greeting and smile from Don Jung. Flag salute was conducted by Donn Ennis. Jay Harkenrider led us in a moment of silence to reflect on the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn. President Tom came close to committing a major faux pas during the announcement of guests. In his enthusiasm to welcome all of guests, he almost overlooked the most important guest; his wife MaryRose. Announcements President Tom announced that Robin Gary was passing a signup sheet for tutoring at Richstone and President Elect Kathleen Terry was taking signups for the District Breakfast on January 8th. Tom recognized Wendell Harter and wife Madelyn for their dancing skills demonstrated at the Joslyn Center Older Adults Holiday Luncheon. Wendell is a better dancer than many of us and he is 92 years old. Way to go Wendell and Madelyn. Paul Allman recognized Shannon Ryan for advancing to another level of Paul Harris Fellow. She has been a member of our Club for only two years and has achieved a contribution level of Paul Harris Plus 3 ($3000). Since Shannon is a Financial Advisor, Paul thought it would be apropos to educate us on the rising cost of the 12 Days of Christmas. Who would have thought that those 2 Turtle Doves 12 Drummers Drumming would cost over $107,000. Tom s Favorite Things We have all heard of Oprah s Favorite Things. In the spirit of giving, President Tom gave all of us a gift bag of Tom s Favorite Things. He must be Santa Clause in disguise. We all received: * A bottle of Neutrogena for guaranteed smoother skin. * A BIC mechanical pencil for signing up for all of the volunteer activities for our Club. * A package of healthy Energy First products courtesy of Gerry Morton. We will need the added energy to help us get through all of the volunteer activities we signed up for with our new BIC pencils. * We also were the recipients of decadent white and dark chocolate cookies made by our own Megan Hall. They were delicious.

Her restaurant, lido di manhattan was voted Beach Reporter s Favorite Italian Restaurant. * President Tom also distributed BBQ aprons with a special pocket for your beer, an attached bottle opener, and BBQ gloves to help with cooking in between the beer drinking. * The last gift was Cinderella Man boxing gloves for anger management exercises to help us cope with shopping crowds over the Holidays. Holiday Music Festival We were treated to a wonderful Holiday Music Festival produced by Kent Caldwell and cast. The choir was composed of Paul Allman, Patrick Donahue, Rick Farrell, Tom Jeffry, Larry Johnson, Mark Lipps, Jan Rhees and Kathleen Terry. Audio/visual support was provided by Eric Iverson. Kent and Sharon Allman provided guitar accompaniment. Kent and the choir led us in singing: Jingle Bell Rock, Deck the Halls, Rocking Round the Christmas Tree, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, and White Christmas. Madelyn and Wendell Harter really got into the spirit of the morning entertaining us with a dancing exhibition during Rocking Round the Christmas Tree. Joel Rubin provided insights on the 8 nights of Hanukkah (also spelled Hanukah, Chanukah, and about 11 other ways). His presentation was very informative. Joel finished with a wonderful song in Hebrew about the Dreidel (Jewish top). The Yiddish word dreydl comes from the word dreyen which means to turn. Joel s musical talent puts him right up there with Rhees, Caldwell, Jung, Farrell, Auringer, Harris, Hallett, Johnson, and Allman. The Dreidel is used in a Jewish gambling game. Based on the recent lack of success of our marble pickers, maybe we should consider replacing the marbles with a Dreidel. The lucky Rotarian spins the dreidel. Depending on which side is facing up when it stops spinning, the Rotarian will either give or take money from the pot: a) If נ (nun) is facing up, the Rotarian does nothing. b) If ג (gimel) is facing up, the Rotarian gets everything in the pot. c) If ה (hei) is facing up, the Rotarian gets half of the money in the pot. d) If ש (shin) or פ (pei) is facing up, the Rotarian must add money to the pot.

6 Ron Sokol and Alex Yoffe added a little Jewish humor to the festivities. In the Jewish culture, a sense of humor is important. What do you call 4 yarmulkes? A jewish string bikini. Ron s impersonation of Jack Benny was perfect. Jack is accosted by a robber. Robber says, Your money or your life. Jack says, Can I think about it? Our two comedians finished with the lyrics from an Adam Sandler song: It s time to celebrate Hannukah I hope I get a harmonica On this lovely, lovely Hannukah So drink your Gin and tonica And smoke your marijuanica If you really, really wannaca Have a happy happy, happy happy Hannukah And the festivities continued.. Our own Sonny and Cher, Paul and Sharon Allman, treated us to a medley of beautiful Christmas and Hannukah songs. They are both talented singers and guitar players. We all know that Sharon is an Angel. We were not sure why Paul felt it was necessary to wear a halo. Maybe he was the devil in disguise. The finale of our festival was the traditional singing of the 12 Days of Christmas. The 2 Turtle Doves table demonstrated the most overall talent (of course this writer was at that table). The best harmonizing went to the 5 Golden Rings table. The most gross was the 6 Geese-a-Laying table. Charlie Steinmetz s depiction of a goose laying an egg was pretty bad. Because of the physical prowess of Russ Samuels and Gerry Morton, the most athletic award went to the 10 Lords-a-Leaping table. We recognized the talented and hardworking hotel staff for their support throughout the year with a rousing rendition of Feliz Navidad. The meeting ended with our traditional drawing. John Van den Akker was the lucky winner of a certificate for ice cream. John Osten had a shot at winning $593, but failed to draw the lucky marble. Maybe the switch to the Dreidel would be a good idea.

7 President Tom closed the meeting with the announcement that we will be dark the next two weeks. Our next meeting will be January 7th.
