Club 4780 of District Racing to Saratoga, May 4-6 Rotary Archive May 4, 1987 The U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership. The Board "encourages all clubs in the U.S. to give fair and equal consideration to candidates for membership without regard to gender." Information/photos available at Emma Trolley Selected to Receive Rotaract Club Scholarship The College s Scholarship Committee has selected Emma Trolley as the latest recipient of our Club s $1,500 Rotaract Scholarship. She will receive half of the award in the fall semester and the other half in the spring semester. Emma is Red Cross club so she does blood drives with us and them. She is a sophomore at SUNY Geneseo majoring in Communication with a minor in Conflict Studies. Outside of academics, she is involved in Geneseo s Red Cross Club as the incoming Blood Drive Coordinator for next year, Women s Club Volleyball, the National Residence Hall Honorary, and Hall Council. In addition, she is involved in the GOLD Program, Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development, and has earned the Bronze, Silver, and Gold certificates through that program. She will also be a Gold Mentor for next year. Lastly, she is a Girl Scout alumna and earned her Gold Award through the program in Overall, she values spending time with family and friends, and giving back above all else. Marilyn Lyon JOKE OF THE MONTH A man and a giraffe walk into a bar. A beer for me and one for my giraffe, the man says, and he then orders another round and another. Eventually, the giraffe passes out on the floor. The man pays his tab and gets up to leave. The bartender asks, Hey, you re not going to leave that lyin on the floor are you? The man replies, That s not a lion, it s a giraffe.

7 May 2018 P a g e 7 Genesee Valley Rotary Camp Kudos Kayla Truong, Rotaract Club President, was named to the Dean s List at the College for the Fall 2017 semester. Students eligible for the list carried 12 or more hours in courses earning quality points and attained a semester s grade point average of 3.5 or above. August 19 to 25 The theme for this year s camp is SCIENE. (Source.. Brian Bartalo, Camp Director) Former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush, an advocate for literacy, education, and women s rights, will speak at the 2018 Rotary Convention in Toronto this June. For decades Mrs. Bush has fought for key national and global issues including launching groundbreaking education and healthcare programs in the U.S. and abroad. She founded both the Texas Book Festival and the National Book Festival in Washington D.C. As chair of the Women s Initiative at the George W. Bush Institute, Mrs. Bush continues her work on global healthcare innovations, empowering women in emerging democracies, education reform, and supporting men and women who have served in the U.S. military.
