1 Hopkins County Business and Professional Women P.O. Box 154, Madisonville KY May 2014 Newsletter A Final Note from the President.. Hello everyone! The end of my reign as President has come to an end. I would like to my Executive Team for the support and leadership and for making my time as president go so smoothly. I appreciate your support and I hope I have represented all of you in a positive manor. And in keeping with the spirit of what BPW is all about, I have continued to grow personally and professionally. I want to congratulate the incoming officer and I look forward to working with you. Again, thank you for your encouragement and support. Wanda Morrow President Officers President Wanda Morrow, Treasurer, Secretary Algia Morrow, President-Elect Lana Moore
2 LEGISLATION COMMITTEE Beth Moore, Chair Brooke Archila On April 8, 2014, a Pay Equity Day Event was co-sponsored by the Hopkins County Business and Professional Women s organization and representatives of Murray State University and Madisonville Community College Humanities Department. A Panel Presentation included Mayor Jenny Sewell (Dawson Springs), City Councilwoman Hannah Myers (Madisonville), and Property Valuation Administrator Margaret Brown (Hopkins County). Dr. Susan Edington of Murray State University welcomed attendees and acted as the moderator of the panel, with some general questions concerning past experience in being one of the few elected females in government positions, experience with pay inequality issues, concerns about gender equality, and other issues. After the presentation, attendees remained to eat dinner and network with colleagues. The event was held at 51 on Main Restaurant in Madisonville, with approximately 20 people attending. Questions were also taken from those who attended the event, in addition to the questions composed by the Women s Studies Class at Madisonville Community College. Information was presented that stated as of 2012, women earned 76 cents for each $1.00 that men earned in wages in the state of Kentucky. The gap is more exaggerated for most women of color Latina women and African American women. The gap has not closed in any substantial way in the last 50 years. Equal pay for women raises family income and the entire family benefits from equal pay for men and women. At this rate, equal pay for women and men will not even be close for 50 more years! 4 Editor s Note Hello BPW Members: As outgoing Newsletter editor I would like to thank those who have for the past year and a half who have contributed to its success in that time. I have accepted the office as secretary and Beth Mitchell has graciously agreed to accept the position as Newsletter Editor. THANK YOU BETH!!!! So as I close this last newsletter, I leave you with a few of the many, many pictures submitted by Wanda Morrow and these reminders: Remember Mom on Mothers Day, Remember the dearly departed on Memorial Day, vote to pay tribute to those who have and continue to fight for our freedom to do so and always appreciate our military personnel and the sacrifices they and their loved ones make everyday for us.
