We gave away almost seventy pounds of candy and made a lot of kids very happy. Thanks to Lions Carole, Mary, Sheila, Don, Pat, Rich and Tim P. for all of their work; special thanks to Joe and his lovely daughters for improving our overall appearance. This month's GM Meeting will feature Dave Oberg, Executive Director of the Grayslake Heritage Center as guest speaker. Dave will be informing us of current and upcoming activities and exhibits at the Center, including a preview of a very special 2013 event. We can all look forward to an interesting and informative meeting with Dave. We have a "first time activity" this month: our Club will be delivering and serving treats to Lions sponsored campers at Camp Red Leaf (Henry Horner) and at Camp Helen Keller (Duncan). Since this event will happen from 7:00 until about 8:00, and will occur during our regular General Membership Meeting, I'm asking for Lion volunteers to deliver the treats and serve them to the campers, instead of attending our June Meeting at Whitney Street. If you'd like to volunteer to do this, please contact me directly at or by . Thanks. General Membership Meeting: June 7:00 p.m. at Whitney Street Our Board meets there one hour prior at 6:00 p.m. All members are welcome at both meetings. 2 Membership. The bar that appears on the first page of this newsletter reflects how many members we have with a view to increase membership to 60 Lions. Membership world-wide has become a real issue as service gives way to the pressures of modern life. Getting and keeping new Lions should be the task of each one of us. More hands make our shared efforts easier. So President Lion Karl asks that each of us invite one person to attend the July meeting no commitments, just a free dinner. We can t reap unless we sow. LAKE COUNTY FAIR. As Lion Karl mentions, the Lake County Fair is scheduled for July 25 to July 29. For newer members, this is an important fund-raising effort for us. Shifts selling admission tickets generally are for 4-6 hours and it is an easy way to meet VERY interesting people. Last year, surprisingly, we had difficulty filling Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday shifts. One can understand the unavailability of folks who still work for a living on the week days, but weekends? Sign up early and often! faces For those who missed the last meeting, this happy fellow is Lion and Zone Chairman Bob Mc Carty (Antioch). After his presentation, our Club agreed to undertake to operate four Texas Hold em poker tournaments next spring. Based on the Antioch experience, this fund raising effort could raise upwards of $12K a year. Just think of the folks we could help with that much green. There will be more on this as the dates approach. Lion Bob s hope is to find one more club to pick up the last four months so we would be able to offer a seat in Las Vegas at the national tournament. 3 Lions News: Your Treasurer, Lion Cynthia Lee, is also active in the Grayslake Exchange Club. In May, Lion Cynthia was awarded the Exchange Book of Golden Deeds award in recognition of her commitment to service. This is the highest award Exchange confers the equivalent of a Melvin Jones. Please join me in congratulating Lion Cynthia for her recognition by the other Grayslake organization that is committed to service.

4 MEMORIAL DAY 2012 Grayslake Lions Club BOARD MEETING May 8, 2012 The meeting was convened at 6:08 PM Present: Lions Rockwell, Lee, Molek, Brenner, Kane, Jarvis, Dorfler, Vleck, Dietz (D), Dietz(M), Bitzinger (K). Minutes: The minutes of the April Board meeting were corrected to reflect that Lion Lee was not present and that the written Treasurer s Report was distributed. On Motion by Lion Bitzinger, Lion Jarvis seconding, the minutes, as corrected, were approved. Treasurer s Report: Lion Lee presented the Treasurer s report. On motion by Lion Lee, Lion Jarvis seconding, the report was placed on file Business: On motion by Lion Lee, Lion Brenner seconding, a $50.00 donation to the Lions of Illinois Foundation in memory of Matt Steel was approved. Lion Molek announced we had received thanks from the Steel family for the flowers and from PADS for our continuing support of that program. We received a request for support from the Foundation for Fighting Blindness. On motion by Lion Rockwell, Bitzinger seconding, a donation of $200 was approved. A second request for a donation from Canine Companions was declined, a donation having previously

5 been made this year. Lion President Molek also reminded that training for club officers was available on Internationals web site and confirmed that the following Lions would be participating in District 1Fs training in May: Molek, Rockwell, Brenner, Vleck, Dietz (M), Dietz (D) and Jarvis Lion Dorfler made a pancake breakfast report. We made $2, after purchase of signage that can be reused. 405 people were served. Lion Walters made a Tootsie Pop day report. Nineteen Lions worked. A donation of 60% of the funds collected, after candy expense, was approved. $2, was collected. Lion Brenner reported that six students were approved for examinations and eye glasses. Lion President Molek asked for volunteers to participate in the May 28 Memorial Day parade. Lion Bob McCarty (Antioch) presented information on the management of Texas Hold Em poker tournaments and solicited Grayslake to participate in four events a year with the Antioch Club. Action was deferred until the general meeting. On Motion by Lion Lee, Lion Vleck seconding, the meeting was adjourned at 7:05 PM. Grayslake Lions Club GENERAL MEETING May 8, 2012 The meeting was called to order by Lion President Molek at 7:22 PM. On motion by Lion Frank, Lion Bitzinger (K) seconding, the minutes of the April General meeting were approved. Treasurer s report: Lion Lee summarized the current state of funds and distributed a report to each table. The report had been placed on file at the Board meeting. Lion Lee has extra sweatshirts available for purchase. Lion Molek asked for volunteers for the May 28 Memorial Day parade in Grayslake and received plenty. Lion Kane announced a Facebook page has been created for the District s next walk for sight and asked Facebook users to find it and like it. Lion Townsend made a Sight and Sound sweepstakes ticket sales report. In total $561 of tickets were sold. The Club share would be 40%

6 Lion Dorfler made a pancake breakfast report (see Board minutes). Lion Walters, R made a Tootsie Pop day report (see Board minutes). Lion Walters (M) made a report on the Winchester House Mothers Day party. Notwithstanding a change in requirements by the staff, there was a good response by additional Lions volunteering to help and the event was a success. Lion Bob McCarty (Antioch) presented information about hosting a Texas Hold Em poker tournament in conjunction with his club. After discussion, Lion President Molek took a poll of those present (20) on whether the club should undertake the project and host four Sunday afternoon tournaments in the hopes of generating between $2K and $4K of income per Sunday. The poll was unanimous. The General meeting was suspended and a meeting of the Board was called to order. On motion by Lion Rockwell, Lion Jarvis seconding, and expenditure of up to $250 was approved to secure a State license to host a poker tournament. The Board meeting was promptly adjourned and the General meeting reconvened. Lion President Molek appointed Lions Runkle and Kane co-chairs of the poker tournament fund raiser and indicated he would do the paperwork for the State license to begin in the Spring of 2013 There being no further business, on motion by Lion Jarvis, Lion Vleck seconding, the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM.
