Lawrence MARDI GRAS PARTY If you are a Jasper Rotarian and you missed the Mardi Gras Party this past Saturday evening, we (those who did attend) had a great time. Try to clear your schedule for next year because we will do this again and you can never have too much fun! All proceeds from the event will go to support Lonnie Waters and Amy Leak, our King and Queen nominees for Pickens County. Mardi Gras in the Mountains is one of our major fund raising events. Special Thanks to Gina Pendley and Amelia McIntire for arranging the event. A very special thank you to Jeff Downing for providing the wine. I can personally testify that it was fantastic! Kay Lawrence President John O. Sneve Secretary Margaret R. Defrancisco President-Nominee Debra Williams Membership Chair Charlie B. Wright Jr. Sergeant-at-Arms Rotary Leadership Institute By Steve D. Lawrence ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Kay and I attended RLI at Athens on Saturday, February 18. It as Kay s second and my first time to attend leadership training. It was not at all as I had pictured. The campus was located in an absolutely beautiful setting. The instructors (DGD Don Martin was Steve Moranos Rotary Foundation Chair,International Service Chair Max Caylor Club Service Chair,International Service Chair Steve D. Lawrence Webmaster DONNA SHORT Vocational Service Chair
2 one of them) were knowledgeable and shared a passion for their subject matter. Jimmy Thompson Past President I learned a lot about this family we call Rotary. There are many of us, over 1.2 million members in 34,000 plus clubs. There are a lot of ways to make Rotary work well in our clubs. All clubs share many things that are the same and yet no two clubs are exactly the same. However, we all work to put service above self. It was also evident that I needed to know a lot more than they presented. I look forward to attending another session. After all, some of those ideas (I ve never had an original idea, but I have borrowed several) may benefit the Rotary Club of Jasper. And, that s MY immediate Rotary Family! Steve Lawrence Rotary has Heart By Max Caylor Rotary has Heart Collecting Cereal for Hope House and Aces Youth Home Jasper. We wanted to do more for out children and youth in our community and the District Program of Rotary Has Heart gave us the opportunity, stated Kay Lawrence president of The Rotary Club of The program asks each Rotary Club to do a project around Valentine s Day 2017 reaching out to the community with a project selected by local clubs. Hope House and the Aces Youth Home both support children and we thought cereal was a food item every one could use, shared Kay. Aces Youth Home s Executive Director Chastity Prather stated, we appreciate any help caring for our clients. They can house seven youth from ages Currently they have 6 composed of thee sibling groups. Hope House is celebrating its 20th Anniversary serving children from birth to age 17.
3 They have provided care for 811 children since organization. Houseparent Violet said, our kids love cereal especially the little ones. Cereals may be of any size and kind. Parents may donate the brand and type they eat at home, added Lawrence. The collection containers are located at United Community Bank, Community Bank of Pickens County, The Bank of North Georgia, Renasant Bank, City Hall, the County Administration Building and Chamber of Commerce. May Peace Prevail on Earth By Steve D. Lawrence MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH One of Rotary Internationals main areas of focus is the promotion of peace throughout the world. To further that goal, the Rotary Club of Jasper announces today their intent to place a Peace Pole at their park located near the Boys and Girls Club at Roper Park. Peace Poles are recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument for peace. They symbolize the oneness of humanity and our common wish for a world at peace. Peace Poles bear the message, May peace prevail on earth in the different languages of the world. In considering a Peace Pole for their park, the Rotary Club of Jasper recognized the unique opportunity available to us as the home of Georgia Marble. Our Peace Pole will be manufactured locally by Blue Ridge Marble and will be made of the same marble as was used in Washington, DC to build the Lincoln Memorial and other national monuments. Our monument will be ten ft. high and placed on a marble base. On each of four sides of the pole, two different languages will display the Peace Pole message of, may peace prevail on earth for a total of eight different languages. Our club has decided that, as well as English, the Cherokee language will be displayed as one of those remaining languages will also mark the 100th year of the beginning of the Rotary Foundation. This Peace Pole will serve to commemorate that event for the Rotary Club of Jasper. Once manufactured and placed, we will have a public ceremony to commemorate this occasion. We invite everyone, both individual and corporate, to join our Rotary Club in this celebration of our new Peace Park. We welcome your contributions to our shared cause of peace. You may make checks payable to the Rotary Club of Jasper, PO Box 39, Jasper, Ga For further information or forms of payment, please call Kay Lawrence, President of the Rotary Club of Jasper, at or klawrence@renasant.com.
