3 Veterans It was November 7, 2011, and President Bill Bloomfield announced that November singing would honor the four branches of our armed services, starting this date with the Marines, with special recognition for our Marines, Steve Murillo and John Osten. Veterans Day this year is 11/11/11, dating back to the Armistice which ended (for awhile, at least) the Great War on November 11, 1918 (Wendell Harter watched it happen OK, OK, on the History Channel). Following some irreverent military humor, President Bill recognized our veterans: Air Force: Tim James Auringer, Wade Austin (Vietnam), Steve DeBaets (Vietnam), Mike Doell, Bill Sauber, Steve Stepanek. Army: Dick Ackerman, Jim Bowser, Roger Civalleri, Patrick Donahue, Dave Hornbecker, Jim Hunter, Ian Jackson (Vietnam), Wayne Nelson, John Rhind, Roger Rombro, Charlie Steinmetz and Chris Ullman (Vietnam, Purple Heart). Marines: Steve Murillo, John Osten. Navy: Ed Kushins. Italy: Arturo DiPietro (Navy). We thank them from our hearts. Rotary is Service Above Self Members in Service Mauricio Salazar started us off with words from Bill Gates basically, it s not what you accomplish so much as what you do for the less fortunate..herb Trachtenberg has 15 years in the club.james Caprell produced an exhibition of his new art work on Veterans Day.Richstone volunteer dates are now on the club website..president Bill is soliciting for elves on December 9..David Boochever has earned a PH + 8, thereby coming within $1000 of joining the ranks of RI Major Donors Jim Hunter and President Bill (who is what, a PH + 999?)..Ed Kushins told us more than we wanted to know about Navy submarine service, regaling us with stories of human waste disposal, with still more to come next meeting.

4 Rotary is Service Above Self Polio Plus Dr. Carol Pendak (the doctorate is in adult education) is the Division Manager of Polio Plus, and President Bill somehow enticed her to fly from Chicago just to speak to us. This unassuming, charming and articulate Rotary International leader has been in charge of all aspects of Polio Plus since Polio Plus is the banner RI project which, in partnership with WHO (World Health Organization) UNICEF, and CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), has wiped out one of the three strains of polio and has the other two on the ropes. This partnership has worked closely with governments all around the world, some of which donate, and has lately been generously supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In 1985 there were 350,000 new polio cases per year in 2011, the number is about 500 so far. The four major countries still targeted go by the acronym PAIN Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria but there have been no new cases in India since January 13, Dr. Pendak shared stories of Rotarians going to remote locales to implement vaccination programs, and shared many slides, including a photo of Bill Gates attending a meeting of the Chad Rotary Club. Rotary International This was a program to remember. Our members who were here in 1987 remember seeing this impossible dream of a project get under way. We suspected then that we were embarking upon the most important commitment any of us would ever be privileged to join, but I think it s safe to say this project has exceeded any of our expectations. Our club, then much smaller, dived right in with substantial leadership gifts to the cause, as did countless clubs around the world. Rotary International has given each of us the chance to say: I helped save literally millions of children s lives, health and welfare. Each of us can claim this as our own, simply because we made the choice to be Rotarians. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects.
