3 Musical Character It was Monday, April 11, 2011, and President Roger Cox yielded the podium to David Paul Harris (we use the full founder-honorific when he carries on like this), who told us that character is the foundation of leadership, after defining character as doing the right thing even when the cost is more than you want to pay..paul Allman, himself a character, introduced some interesting guests, including past Manhattan Beach Rotarian Mike Schneider (now a member of the Brentwood club in Contra Costa County), Paul s cousin Stephanie Morris (just arrived from University of Colorado and looking for work), and Charlie Rosen (betrothed of Patty Panucci).Paul let us know that Rick Farrell and he would join three other (non-rotary) musicians on the stage at Suzie s on Sunday night at a fundraiser for Casa Hogar. To warm up for playing his nickelharpa, Paul bravely stuck his hand in Roger the Fishmonger s box, felt around, and failed to recognize the Tasmanian Ocean Trout inside.on a less musical note, we as a club stumbled and bumbled through still another humble version of Happy Birthday, this round for Deb Arnold. (Note to Chris Ullman s inexplicably absent groupies: now aren t you sorry you missed that?) Ah, But That s Not All President Roger enjoyed the considerable privilege of inducting a new member, Robin Gary, a pilates instructor sponsored by Jim Hunter (yes, this begs for a comment, but I shall refrain for once).pilates may be all that s left for personal trainer Russ Samuels, who displayed a left wrist encased in a cast after not acting my age, and who has thereby avoided humiliating himself in Kent Caldwell s Manhattan Beach Rotary Masters series of golf tournaments.a sheepish (I only get to use that adjective for two more months, sigh) President Roger admitted that New Zealand s cricketeers fell to Sri Lanka in the World Cup semis.kathleen Adams, working with Monica Farrell and Kathleen Terry, wants our full participation on May 18 in Mira Costa s day at Finance Park. The school is providing transportation. (Monica spoke to every senior class pitching the program.)

6 Seven Summits That s Summit, as in Success Ultimately Means Making Impact Today, and investment banker Paul Fejtek made considerable impact in describing his ascent of the seventh of the seven summits, climbing Mt. Everest last May with his wife, Denise. (Only 275 folks have made all seven summits.) The keys? Preparation and Teamwork. To prepare, he and his wife became triathletes (looking for fellow ironmen in the audience, he found Gerry Morton). Paul finds multiple life lessons in his climbs The achievement of your goal is assured the minute you commit to it and Getting to the top is optional, but getting back down is mandatory. Paul is publishing a book, Steps to the Summit. His Everest climb garnered over $114,000 in donations to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a cause dear to him he s done all this climbing with a right arm somewhat crippled from childhood by brachial plexus palsy. Casa Hogar Paul Sanchez and Patty Panucci joined the Rotary team visit a couple of weeks ago to Casa Hogar, contributing their time to performing dental work for the children and community (assisted by Patty s husband Charlie, whose Red Bull credentials were apparently enough to make him useful). Randy Meadors now has the website set up, so check it out: You can sign up online to be a monthly contributor of any amount, however small so that you can help this orphanage attain, at long last, financial stability. If you like being in good company, rest assured that, although this is not an official club project as such, many of our members are signing in up in support of the core of Manhattan Beach Rotarians and spouses who have dedicated countless hours to this place. One of those hardcore Casa Hogar Rotarians is Steve Murillo, so it was a good day for him to pick the white marble and walk off with $1856. Cheers all around, Mates. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

8 How I Introduce Guests 1) Five to ten minutes prior to gaveling the meeting to order, the introducer goes to the Club Secretary retrieves a list of guests' names. At this time, the list SHOULD BE READ making sure the names are legible. 2) Find the guest and ask them how they pronounce their name if it's a difficult name. Ask who brought or invited them. Write that name next to their name if it hasn't already been done. 3) Once, you are at the podium introduce: a) Visiting Rotarians first. b) Then call on THE PERSON who brought the guest, unless that person is not present. The sponsor of the guest will have the guest stand, wave and the sponsor takes 15 to 30 seconds to introduce his or her guest. The guest sits down. THE GUEST DOES NOT SPEAK, unless it has been cleared with the President. If guest is solo, let the guest take 15 to 30 seconds to state who they are and what they are about. TELL THE GUEST THIS AHEAD OF INTRODUCTIONS. c) Make a call to the room to see if you have missed any guests. This can be done two ways: 1) Call to the room asking for guests or visitors, 2) Call table by table asking for guests or visitors. 4) If you have cleared it with the President, you may sing "The Welcome Song." This can be done three ways: a) You have the whole room stand and sing together while finding guests with which to shake hands, b) You can sing by yourself, c) You can sing by yourself in the closet. Yours in Rotary, C. W. Ullman
