3 DALLAS CAMERA CLUB Two French Curves - By Jerry Comer, 1st place in the Masters Prints division in the October Curves contest. THRU THE LENS Film or Digital Digital ISO Setting Camera Type - D-SLR Camera Manufacturer - Pentax Camera Model - istd Shutter Speed and Aperture - Unrecorded Lens Choice zoom Lens Manufacturer - Pentax Filter - Polarizing on camera Flash - None. Light source is a lightbox with polarizing sheet. Location - Studio (spare bedroom). Time of Day - Evening. Tripod - None. The camera is mounted on a copy stand. Cable Release - Yes. Special adjustments made after image was captured - Nominal cleanup, saturation and sharpening. Jerry Comer Comments - Back in the days before computers took over, engineers used pencils and paper on a drafting table to create drawings. As an aid to drawing irregular shapes, there were templates called French Curves in various shapes and sizes. These templates were usually molded of transparent plastic. When plastic parts are molded, internal stresses are created in the material as it cools. If the material is transparent, these stresses can be viewed as color fringes by illuminating the part with polarized light and viewing it through a polarizing filter. The image entered in the DCC competition shows the stress lines in two French curves. A polarized light source for the templates was created by laying a flat sheet of polarizing material over a light box used for slide viewing. The curves are laid on top of the filter sheet. This can be seen in the first picture which also shows the camera mounted on the copy stand; the lamp in the light box is not turned on in this view of the setup. The polarizing filter for the camera is still in its storage box in this shot. The second picture shows a split view through the camera lens, with and without the polarizing filter on the camera. The light box is illuminated in both views. The color fringes appear when the camera filter is attached. Note that light from the light box is still visible when the color fringes are - this is because the filter on the camera has not been adjusted (rotated) to be completely out of phase with the filter sheet. In the submitted image, the camera filter has been turned until it is exactly out of phase with the light passing through the sheet filter. This blocks all of the light and makes the background black However, the light which passes through the curves undergoes a phase shift which allows it to be seen by the camera, rendering the curves visible and showing the color fringes.
