We had the prints back in time this month. The subject assignment was Open December 18 The program for this meeting was the Annual DCC Christmas Party and Gift Exchange. Thanks to the planning and work of Nellie Bretherick and Dody Bracken, we had a wonderful party. Plenty of food, and especially deserts, and a great time of gift exchanging and stealing. It s was obvious that some of our generous members spent more than the $10-15 limits we set, but it was a great time of sharing for all. SHUTTER OPEN January 8 ATTENTION!! If you get nothing else from this newsletter, be informed that the first meeting in 2002 in on January 8, not January 1. Results of the December slide and and print competitions will be shown. The assigned subject for this competition is Patterns and Textures Turn-ins will be accepted for the January slide and print competitions. The assignment for slides and prints is Open. January 15 The Caprock Canyon Field Trip Slide Show will be shown at the January 15 meeting. It is being produced by Jim and Barbara Galbraith. The second portion of the program will be a projected video of the life and work of Ansel Adams Guests and New Members We will have slide shows from the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge at the February 19th. meeting. Get your slides from this trip to Dee Lang by January 8. Next year s schedule will be available after the new officers and chairs are in place. ELECTION OF NEXT YEARS OFFICERS At the March 5th. meeting a slate of officers will be presented to the club for voting. Officer elected at this meeting will complete the leadership roster and will be installed at the April 2, 2002 Annual Awards Banquet. They will take office effective April 2. The elected officers per the DCC Yearbook are the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Slide Chair, and Print Chair. The retiring President is automatically an officer of the new board. There is no restriction on an officer holding the same position for more than one year. If you are interested (or willing) in filling a specific position, please let a member of the Nominating Committee know as soon as possible so we can match your interest with the position. Members of the start-up Nominating Committee are Dave Rochier, Gary Kelly, Clark Crenshaw. If you would like to serve on the Nominating Committee, please let one of these three people know. 6 YEAR END SPECIAL COMPETITIONS There are four special year end competitions and awards. Three are in honor of past DCC member who made significant contribution to the club and also in recognition of these special member s photography love. More information is available on page 17 of the DCC Yearbook: The J. J. Spurlock Award for Creative Portraiture. This award is limited to monochrome and color portraits prints made during the current club year. Slides are not acceptable for this award. Members may submit up to four prints for this competition. The Marge Dance Contemporary Slide Award is given to the contemporary slide that is chosen from any image made during the club year. Members may submit up to four slides for this competition. The Milton J. Ruddick Travel Slide Award and images of any subject matter taken outside of the Metroplex area during the current club year may be submitted. Members may submit up to two slides for this competition. Field Trip Slide of the Year Award. This award is given to the slide selected by the judge or judges that was taken on a DCC field trip during the current club year. Members may submit up to three slides for this competition. YEAR END REGULAR COMPETITIONS There are two regular year end competitions and awards. These are the Slide of the Year and Print of the Year Awards. Due to the large number of entries in regular club competition this year, submissions for these two awards will be limited to only 1st., 2nd, and 3rd. placing images from the 10 monthly competitions. Even with this limitation, there will still be 90 prints and 90 slides to evaluate and our judges work for free. These entries need to be turned in at the March 5 meeting. Of course winning entries from that night s presentations will be eligible. 7 PUBLIC SERVICE OPPORTUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC JUDGES NEEDED The National PTA Reflections Program is a fine arts program encouraging students grades Kindergarten through twelve to experiment and show their talents in four arts areas: Visual Art, Photography, Literature and Music. I am co-chair at the District 10 level of judging. This means we are judging the cream of the crop from over 20 local area school districts from Mesquite to Plano and Irving. Our winners will advance to the State level of judging. I am looking for some Photography judges to come to Carrollton's Newman Smith High School on Saturday, Jan.12 from 9:45 till about 12:00 noon to judge these wonderful entries. We will provide a lunch and refreshments. Please feel free to contact me at for more information or at ash.hair@prodigy.net. Thanks for your interest in our future artists/ photographers. Heather Ashwell-Hair Father Time is an especially appropriate figure to include in this months newsletter for a couple of reasons. Not only do we toss out the old year but if you look at the newsletter masthead (that the stuff on the top of the very first page) you will see the newsletter is Volume 69. That means the Dallas Camera Club has been publishing the newsletter for sixty nine years as of this edition. IT S DUES PAYING TIME IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS Annual Dallas Camera Club dues are due to be paid on or before April 1, Dues are $30 per individual and $15 for full time students. Here are some of the items which are paid with your dues: Meeting room rental $600 a year Mailing slides and prints to and from the judges Print and mailing the monthly Newsletter Certificates for contest winners Plaques and trophies for contest winners, high points winners, the DCC Annual Award, and outgoing President. Memberships in Gulf States Camera Club Council and PSA. Make checks payable to Dallas Came ra Club and get them to Adela Rochier, our treasurer. 7
