2 Personal Projects One of the things I most enjoyed about Tyler Stableford s presentation was his Farmers/Ranchers photos that started as a personal project. Personal projects are a great way to improve your skills as a photographer. Whether you are telling a story that means something to you or trying something new, you re taking photographs and it allows you to think creatively and gives you a focus. Many of us are familiar with the Humans of New York (HONY) project, which started as a personal project in 2010 whenphotographer Brandon Stanton had the idea to construct a photographic census of New York City. Another personal photography project that you may have heard of is That Tree where photographer Mark Hirsch took a photo every day for a year of the same tree. Some tips for a personal project are: Set a goal - Do you want to tell a story? Master a new skill? Do you want to create a book, a set of prints, or create a gift? Choose a subject that excites you, that you can return to over and over. Don t think about what others would like to see, this is about you. Some ideas for projects are: Long Exposures Self-Portraits Stranger Portraits Emulate the style of a photographer or artist that you admire Long Exposure Night Photography Random Word A-Z Macro Seasons A Day in the Life Black & White What I m Thankful For The Kids Were Here Low-Light Double Exposure Your Hometown The ideas are endless...

3 What: Cedar Rapids Boxing Club June LAPC group shoot Where: Veterans Memorial Building, 50 2nd Ave Bridge, CR When: Thursday June 8 Time: 5pm to 7pm I don t remember how I got the idea that I d like to shoot sweaty boxers doin their thing with the bonus of a boxing ring. But it s definitely sticking to my theme of shoots you wouldn t normally try on your own! But we re going to do it and I couldn t be more excited! I think it is going to be one of those good ones, right up there with the skateboarders & paramount! I really try hard not to plan shoots during the week, but this one can t be helped. They practice two nights during the week and that Thursdays is the night that he ll have most of his group there. Their practice goes from 4:30 to 7pm. Our shoot is from 5-7pm. Go in the 2nd Avenue door, go to the right to the elevator or stairs and go down 2 flights to the basement. We ll find a place to drop gear. I will have permission for shooting in the basement. Please don t go exploring on your own. I don t have permission to go shooting the rest of the building. Coach has asked for NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY so you ll really have to practice your Tyler Stableford skills! But coach has promised to get them nice and sweaty for us. I am working on getting a shooter to bring a portable studio set up that anyone can use for portrait work. There will be shooting in the cavernous ring area; a cramped training room complete with all sorts of boxing gear & boxers; we ll have a portrait set up in the big room with the stage, lots of brick walls to shoot with and a beautiful industrial flood door that would make a great backdrop as well. As with most of our club shoots, this shoot is free to attend for all current LAPC members. Please RSVP to activities@linnareaphotoclub.org by so I can let our Boxing club contact know. Monthly meetings are normally held at 1:30pm the second Sunday of the month at Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center in Toddville. (See Calendar of Events for details) Club Membership is open to photographers of all skill levels and photographic interests. Club Membership dues are $25 annually and includes a variety of educational programs, seminars and photo shoots. There is an informal monthly theme contest and an annual club contest that drew over 90 entries in its first year. SPONSORS Members range from beginners to professionals and use both digital and traditional photographic technology. LAPC is a great place to meet and learn from other photo enthusiasts.

Include the following information in the with your image: Name address Image title JPEG images only (smaller than 4MB file size) Optional information: camera settings (f-stop, shutter speed and ISO) We have made some changes to the criteria for evaluations. We will be looking at the following criteria and provide feedback. Composition: Center of interest Placement of subject Foreground/Background Format Cropping Perspective Line, shape, pattern, texture Image Quality Focus Exposure Contrast Lighting Grain Depth of field Color Depth of tones Storytelling Message Impact Creativity and originality Rae Lowenberg

6 May Meeting Craig Hemsath will be doing a presentation on his photographs for from his expedition to Greenland. He will present his photographs and touch on Micro-Four-Thirds camera system.
