4 APERTURE noun ap er ture \ˈap-ə(r)-ˌchuṙ, -chər, -ˌtyuṙ, -ˌtuṙ\ TERMINOLOGY SPOTLIGHT Definition: the opening in a photographic lens that admits the light ( a.k.a. f-stop Large aperture Shallow DOF/Focus More light hitting sensor Small aperture Deep DOF/Focus Less light hitting sensor Each full stop either halves or doubles the amount of light. What is Aperture? Put most simply Aperture is the opening in the lens. When you hit the shutter release button of your camera a hole opens up that allows your cameras image sensor to catch a glimpse of the scene you re wanting to capture. The aperture that you set impacts the size of that hole. The larger the hole the more light that gets in the smaller the hole the less light. Aperture is measured in f-stops. Moving from one f-stop to the next doubles or halves the size of the amount of opening in your lens (and the amount of light getting through). There are a number of results of changing the aperture of your shots that you ll want to keep in mind as you consider your setting but the most noticeable one will be the depth of field that your shot will have. Depth of Field (DOF) is that amount of your shot that will be in focus. Large depth of field means that most of your image will be in focus whether it s close to your camera or far away. Small (or shallow) depth of field means that only part of the image will be in focus and the rest will be fuzzy. Aperture has a big impact upon depth of field. Large aperture (remember it s a smaller number) will decrease depth of field while small aperture (larger numbers) will give you larger depth of field. Shooting in Aperture Priority: Aperture priority: (A on Nikon and Sony, Av on Canon) this mode has you in control of two of the three exposure controls: ISO and aperture. The camera will select an appropriate shutter speed to give you a correct exposure. Choose Aperture Mode when you want to control depth of field (DOF) as your top priority. For example, to create shallow DOF for a portrait, people photos, or any time you want a blurred background, choose a large aperture. In contrast, if you want a larger DOF for a landscape photo, group portraits, or shots where you want maximum detail and sharpness, choose a smaller aperture, like f11 or smaller. Source: Just remember the greater the number, the greater your depth of field. To illustrate how changing your aperture changes your image, see the examples on the following page. Each photo was taken at a progressively smaller aperture, starting at f/2.8 and going up one stop at a time until the final photo at f/32. Note how the depth of field changes as the aperture continues to get smaller. ISO was set at 100 for all 8 photos. Source: Page 3 of 13

6 January Monthly Meeting by Cherie Flint The January meeting took place at Wickiup Learning Center on January 11th There were 48 people in attendance. Rick Young, club president started the meeting with the introductions of new members and visitors. Laurel introduced herself to the rest of the club. She uses a Nikon camera and enjoys photographing landscapes. After introductions were made, Rick had club members break into groups. He requested that groups should be formed in such a way that members would work with someone that they did not know. The goal was to meet someone outside your normal photography circle. Each individual completed the survey and discussed their responses with their group. Announcements: Finances: Treasurer, David Byrnes reported that as of January 11th, 2015 the club has $ Activities Director, Amy Mueggenburg shared the 2014 Help-Portrait video that was created for the December 6th, 2014 event. The statics from that event are: individuals were photographed families were photographed at 4 locations - 25 photographers took pictures of the families - 58 photo editors volunteered Agency assistant volunteers - 15 make-up artists - 2 therapy dogs - 13 family members was the largest group photographed 2015 Help-Portrait event is December 5th, To sign up to volunteer go to Monthly Photo Contest The monthly contest theme was Holiday Magic. There were a total of 9 entries. 1st place was Steve Thompson with 32 votes. 2nd place was Lynn Reihman with 23 votes. 3rd place was Pam Olson with 20 votes. Monthly Presentation: For the monthly presentation, Rick Young, discusses how to photography snow. A handout was provided to members to handle the tricky conditions to adequately capture the natural beauty. The following things were discussed. Metering bright light or white subjects: When photographing snow and water, the camera assumes average middle gray and the scene is under exposed. There are three techniques to adjust your metering. 1. Spot meter the scene using a subject that is middle gray. Then manually adjust your camera setting to that reading. 2. Set your exposure compensation to overexpose for images in these conditions. It is suggested to +1 for overcast conditions and +2 for sunny conditions. 3. Use your bracketing feature. This feature automatically shoots each frame with 3-5 different exposures. This allows you of range to choose from. Suggested Camera Settings: White Balance: Point your camera at a large spot of clean snow and set the custom white balance based on that reading or use an exposure metering tool. This will help eliminate the snow having a blue appearance. ISO: Use the lowest possible like 50/100. you may have to go higher if you need to capture a darker scene. Aperture Priority: Used Most often Manual: Best used when you want to control light or adjust the mood yourself Photo Pam Olson Page 5 of 13
7 January Monthly Meeting continued Shutter Priority: Used when you want to capture action like birds in flight, Winter Sports, and snowflakes. Tips for Capturing Snow Make snowflakes appear in streaks: Use a tripod and a longer shutter speed. Slower than 1/60 second Freeze the snowflakes: use a faster shutter speed (greater than 1/60 second). Make snowflakes appear large: use a flash. Getting snowflakes to show up in the image, position yourself so that you are shooting them against a darker background. Camera Care: After being out in the cold for long periods of time, do not bring your equipment directly into the house. This will prevent condensation to form inside your camera. Leave your equipment outside for about 10 minutes, then bring it inside and put it in the coldest room of the house. January Photography Shoot: Winter weather conditions. After the meeting, members had an opportunity to practice what was discussed during the presentation by going outside and photography the winter and snow conditions around Wickiup. Bob Lancaster was available to assist members with any questions, they might have had. February Monthly Meeting by Cherie Flint The February meeting took place at Wickiup Learning Center on February 8th, There were 55 people in attendance. There were six new members that introduced themselves. - Jennifer Reese uses a Canon camera and enjoys photographing kids. - Terry Lawrence uses a Canon camera and enjoys macro photography, time stacking and astro-photography. - Allen Wyatt shoots with a Canon camera photographing High Dynamic Range and Black & White. - Adam O Rourke is from the Quad Cities and is color blind so he photographs a lot of black and white. He uses a Canon 7D. - Rob Schnieder enjoys hiking and photographs a lot of nature. He uses a mirrorless Sony camera. - Dave enjoys photographing kids and nature. He uses a Canon camera. Linn Area Photo Club is currently 80 members strong. Announcements: Rick Young discussed possible upcoming meeting topic regarding rapture birds. The club is looking to bring the group SOAR to do a presentation on birds with the possibility to photography the birds. There is a cost to bring the group in and asked the members if there would be an objection to members offering a donation to help cover the cost of the presentation. At this time there were no objections. Iowa County Conversion Project There is a possible project that was addressed to the club. The Conservation Board in looking to have poster made for photos taken in each of the 99 counties in Iowa. The images have to be taken from one of the county parks or recreation area in each county. May Monthly Meeting May 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm Wickiup Recreation Center Morris Hills Rd, Toddville, IA Topic: TBD Photo Contest Theme: Silhouette (This year s Iowa State Fair 2015 Theme Class) A silhouette is an image of a person, animal, object, or scene that appears dark against a lighter background. The main subject appears as a solid shape, usually black, against the background. The interior of a silhouette is featureless and without detail. Because a silhouette emphasizes the outline of an object, only its shape and lines can give us a clue as to what the main subject may be. Silhouettes can often be used to convey feelings, emotions, mood, drama, and mystery of the subject. Silhouettes can also be used a way to demonstrate the environment that surrounds the subject. Mark will have some models in studio to show us how to pose a subject, and how to tell them to move. For this shoot, DSLR camera is required. No need to bring any other equipment. I do need an RSVP on this shoot, and because of the location and also to give each of us time to practice the shooting, the max number of participants is 20. Please RSVP to activities@linnareaphotoclub.org. What: Where: When: April LAPC group shoot Tropical Fish Noelridge Park Greenhouse 4900 Council St NE, Cedar Rapids Saturday April 4 th, 8:30am to 10:30am In April we ll be shooting tropical fish at the annual Eastern Iowa Aquarium Association (EIAA) annual tropical fish show. 11 April LAPC group shoot continued Special thanks to Bob Hollenbeck, LAPC member and EIAA member who helped me set this up. For more information on EIAA, here is their website: Photo Bob Hollenbeck What: Where: When: May LAPC group shoot Musical Instruments West Music 1398 Twixt Town Road, Marion, Iowa Saturday May 9th, 9:30am to 11:30am In May, we are going to try our hand at a type of art photography, that of musical instruments. I ve had a few requests to do instruments and have been working on this one for the last year. It has finally come together thanks to West Music of Marion. We ll have the recital room to ourselves and the staff will bring us just about any instrument we request. Personally I think there is a lot of beauty in an instrument. The string instruments are my favorite, though I can t play, I think they are just beautiful. For this shoot I m hoping to capture a clarinet or flute with just the first few keys in focus and the rest blurred out. Perhaps a brass instrument in HDR? And oh all the possibilities in B&W. I will need an RSVP on this instrument shoot as well. And I will need a few things from you. 1. RSVP 2. Are there any instruments on your wish list. Tell me when you RSVP. 3. I m looking for 3 volunteers to bring some kind of light set ups so we can have various stations going. RSVP to activities@linnareaphotoclub.org. As with most of our club shoots, this shoot is free to attend for all current LAPC members. Photo Amy Mueggenberg Please consider donating 2 or 3 images back to West Music as a thank you for letting our group use their space and take their time during business hours for our photography. Remember to include an Image Rights note in your for your photo donation. Please forward images or links to images in Dropbox/similar to activities@linnareaphotoclub.org.
