BASIC APPRECIATION AND HISTORY In 1839 the first permanent photographic images were mass produced introducing photography to the world. Photography became and remains a way for us to know or learn about specific topics, places, and events. Photography is also a way for use to remember our past. DIGITIAL PHOTOGRAPHY TERMS PIXEL: The smallest element of a digital image, from a television screen, computer monitor, photograph, or similar display MEGAPIXEL: A unit equal to one million pixels. It is often used to refer to the resolution of a photograph. RESOLUTION: The total number of pixels in an image or total amount of information captured in a photograph. DPI: Means dots per inch, and has to do with just how much ink your printer lays down when it prints a photograph PPI: Refers to how many pixels per inch your computer monitor can display an image. MEGABYTE: Approximately 1000 KB, or 1 million bytes JPEG: Standardized file format used by most digital cameras for storing images on your camera and the computer. Images on the web are also usually this format. LCD: Stands for Liquid Crystal Display. It s the full color display screen on your camera used to preview and review pictures, and view info such as menu options & camera settings MEMORY CARD: A small, flat flash drive used in digital cameras and cell phones to store information

2 EXPOSURE BASICS AND CAMERA TERMS and FUNCTIONS EXPOSURE: In Photography it is the amount of light that is captured on the photographic medium (film OR light sensor) during the process of taking a photograph. Exposure in digital photography includes the lens, shutter, aperture and image sensor all working together. THE CAMERA IS LIKE THE HUMAN EYE: The camera was designed to capture light and record an image like the human eye. The Eye contains a lens, pupil, eye lid and retina and a Camera contains a lens, aperture (pupil), shutter (eye lid), image sensor (retina). LENS: part of camera that captures and focuses light SHUTTER: controls the amount of time (how long) light enters the camera. Usually measured in fractions of seconds. APERTURE: opening that controls the amount of light that enters the camera. Usually measured in F-Stops. IMAGE SENSOR: records and converts an optical image (what the camera sees) into an electronic (digital signal). ISO and White Balance: Both terms refer to the sensitivity of the cameras light (image) sensor to light. CAMERA SHAKE: takes place when the camera is accidently moved during picture taking resulting in blurring images. Often happens in low light situations when the shutter is open for an extended period of time. MACRO MODE: Macro focused used to create shallow depth of field (subject in front is in focus and background is out of focus/blurry) LANDSCAPE MODE: Landscape mode used to create a great depth of field (all information is in focus).

3 NIGHT MODE/LOW LIGHT: Used to capture images at night or low light situation. Controls shutter timing to allow more light. SPORTS MODE/SHUTTER PRIORITY: Used to freeze fast moving subject. FLASH MODES: Flash Auto Flash No Flash COMPOSITION: Be prepared to answer a multiple choice question selecting the compositional technique BEST shown in the photograph AND provide a written response explaining why. SUBJECT (Focal Point): Creates an object of interest that captures the views attention and explains the purpose of the photograph. POINT OF VIEW: Where the photograph was taken from: Birds Eye View, Worms Eye View, Near and Far

4 RULE OF THIRDS: The grid method of placing the main subject on these points creates balance and interest FRAMING: A tool used to emphasize the focal point/subject where something frames the subject matter. FOCUS: Depth of Field: Shallow and Great. Can be blurred to create movement

5 LIGHT: We mainly use natural, direct, mixed, and artificial. LINE: Can be Vertical, Horizontal, and Diagonal & Organic COLOR: Can better describe an object or subject. Create a strong focal point. Can evoke emotions or mood.

6 TEXTURE: Can better describe your subject. Create emphasis and intrigue. Describes what an object feels like.

7 ADOBE PHOTOSHOP: Throughout the course you used Adobe Photoshop to edit, crop, organize and manipulate your photographs.
