Qld www:cpsinc.org.au N e w s l e t t e r June 2007 Membership Fees Cairns Regional Gallery Membership fees will be due on the 30th June 2007 June Meeting Our guest speaker for the evening was Henry Molla, an accredited judge with the Photographic Society of Qld and the Australian Photographic Society. Henry gave a presentation on what judges look for in competitions which proved to be a great bonus to anyone wishing to enter competitions. As the Cairns Photographic Society is the steward for the Cairns Show, Henry s talk was followed by a discussion on matting and how to present your photos. A criteria that Henry mentioned in his talk. The Cairns Show also brought about several ideas on what members perceive Monochrome to be. This will certainly have to be clarified for next year s show for inclusion in the show schedule. If you Google Monochrome Definitions, you will come up with, Black and White. Our computer was in action, after having to have the cd player repaired and so members were able to watch the cd of the Birds of Prey Outing. Thank you to the members who submitted photos for it. As well as the AGM in August we will be having our preliminary judging for the Cairns Regional Gallery. This is such a golden opportunity for you, the photographer and our Club. An opportunity to have your photographs hung in the Gallery and possibly sold, and if this is successful, the Gallery will give us the chance to have this exhibition every two years. It will then be a golden opportunity for future members to participate in. The theme, Faded Glory, can be photos taken any time and any place. Be creative and artistic as you want to be, use some lateral thinking about the subject and if it is a photo that you would like to hang on your wall, then submit it. Photos are to be 8 x12 for this judging only and Rachel Whymark will give the size of the frames that the Gallery is making available to us, plus all of the other details. An Evening with Derby Please don t forget our competition with Derby City Photographic Club in November. If you could please bring your photos on a CD to the August meeting, up to five photos per member. We require 40 photos in total to send to Derby.

2 Page 2 Web Sites As most cameras have batteries, as well as many other items that we own, we have a responsibility to look after our environment. You should check this website out on how to care and dispose of your batteries. Tony Bainbridge is happy to hold future workshops and they will be outdoors as well as indoors with lights. If you have any ideas on other workshops, please contact the committee or put your suggestion in the box at the next meeting. Portrait Workshop Tony Bainbridge conducted the workshop attended by many. It was this committees first attempt at holding one and we did learn a few things on how to improve it, which we will! One other lesson learnt was, know your camera. Read your manuals and get to know where everything is and how to change settings. Tony Bainbridge giving a helping hand All set up, ready to go! 3 Page 3 So, where is everyone going?? To the Mareeba Zoo for the club s day out on the 15 April!! And it was great to see so many come along for the day. Photography was difficult though because of the wire fences but with some tips from Frank Harrison, the problem was overcome to a degree in many instances. Thanks Frank. But the Ostrich made it very easy for everyone, he just poked his head over the fence and was very co-operative and there was a viewing platform for the hippos. Lots of walking though, up and down the hills with tripods over our shoulders - so who said photography doesn t provide exercise! We certainly got our 30 minutes for the day. A CD will be put together of our outing and shown at our next meeting, if you haven t given your photos in for inclusion, please contact Dell Deed if you wish to have your photos of the zoo on the CD.

4 Page 4 A.G.M The Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday the 7th August 2007 and all members of the Management Committee shall retire from office but shall be eligible upon nomination for re-election. Nomination forms will be available at the next meeting and sent with this newsletter also. Any two members of the Association (CPS Inc) shall be at liberty to nominate any member to serve as a member of the Management Committee. The nomination form is to be in writing and signed by the member and his proposer and seconder and shall be lodged with the Secretary at least fourteen days before the AGM. Management Committee positions are:- President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer As well as:- Two Committee Members (one of whom will be the Competition Secretary) Newsletter Editor Membership fees must be paid in order to nominate and vote at the AGM and participate in club activities. Fees are:- Single Membership Family Membership Student Half yearly memberships are only available from January to June of each year. ` August Outing Members have chosen to go to the Mareeba Air Show on Sunday, 19 August. The show commences at 9am and finishes at 3pm. Entry fee is Adults $15, Children $5 and Family $35. At this time it is uncertain as to whether we can obtain a discount on the entry fee, but members will be advised as soon as possible. July Meeting Our guest speaker for July will be Steven Nowakowski, an avid professional photographer of such areas as the Hinchinbrook and is a great supporter of our wilderness areas. Steven has produced several books and you can check his website out on Our Web Site In the next couple of weeks our website will be changing to a more static site. TAFE Photoshop Course This is due to start on the 19th July and runs for 8 weeks. The cost is only $82.50 and there is a concession price as well. These courses fill up fast, so don t delay in ringing if you are interested.

5 Page 5 June Outing Set down for Sunday the 17 June at 5.30pm. It will be a byo barbecue as well as a presentation night for the winners of our monthly competition. That will be followed by night photography along the Esplanade and city area. You will need your tripod, torch (to check settings on your camera), remote or cable release, raincoat, umbrella or protection for your camera, because if it is just light rain, you should get some great shots and you will also need insect repellent. The meeting place is the barbecue area between Muddies and the Skate Park. Guide to Night Photography for Digital Camera The challenge of capturing the mood of a night scene depends on whether your camera is capable of night photography and a couple of simple techniques. For successful night photography you will need a camera that is capable of keeping the shutter open for a long period of time, anything from 3 to 30 seconds or bulb that allows for longer shutter speeds. Check your camera specifications in the User s Manual under Shutter Speed. For the image to be captured by the image sensor, requires exposure to light. But at night, light is what we don t have enough of. You may have noticed that if you select a shooting mode of Auto or Program Auto your photos always come out too dark. They are simply underexposed. But why is that, if your camera shutter speed is say from 10 secs to 1/2000 sec. Go back and check your camera s User Manual and see if these speeds are available in Auto or Program mode. Many cameras do not make all of these speeds available in these modes. To access the longer shutter speeds you may have to go to other shooting modes, eg Shutter Priority or even full Manual Mode. So ensure your camera has full manual mode and allows access to the full range of slow shutter speeds in that mode. Another feature is your camera to have a self timer or remote controller/cable release. The purpose is to allow you to depress the shutter release button without introducing camera shake. A mandatory accessory is a sturdy tripod. When you let the shutter stay open for a long time, the camera needs to be kept rock steady, otherwise you end up with blurred pictures. Some suggested settings to start with are:- ISO 100 Shutter Speed 4 sec Aperture f4 or 5.6 Take a number of shots at different shutter/aperture combinations and review immediately. These settings are a recommendation only, but a starting point for your night photography. Web Site For reviews on printers.

6 Change to Competition Rules The rules have changed!! The words no manipulation and digital photos can only be enhanced only as much as film can have been removed.!! This change was put to the members and approved at the last club meeting. Just clarifying that all new members will be in Division Two and re-assessed after three months. If the member is changed to First Division, all points that have been won in second division will be transferred as well. July Competition The subject for July is Five and you can be as creative as you wish with this one. Put your thinking cap on and give the judge a huge choice of photos to find the winning entries. Future Competition Subjects August - No competition due to CRG selection. Club Competition Rules Page 6 Entry fee of $1 per member for up to three (3) photos. All photos must have been taken within the last twelve (12) months. Photos entered in the 2007/8 competition MUST NOT have been exhibited during the year 2006/7 and financial members only are eligible to enter. Up to three photos per member can be submitted, the size is 5 x 7 or 5 x 8 - no smaller and no larger, not matted, and also no white Your name must be on a separate piece of paper and attached to the back of the photo (post-it-note) NOT written on the photo. Unidentified photos will not be entitled to judging Please take note of these rules as the judges will disqualify photos that do not comply with them Junior Division Photos can be any subject and the size is 6x4. Entry is 50c for up to 3 photos. Name and information to be attached to back of photo s. September - Black & White October - Sky November - Candlelight February - Open March - Transport (Any Mode) April - Food May - Water (Any Form) June - Open Up Close and Spineless The Australian Museum s annual competition is on again.
