3 Overview of Last Meeting Mitch talked about the upcoming Eungella Photographic weekend and encourage all who wish to go along to book accommodation as soon as possible. We have listed some options in the Outings section of this newsletter. David shared some Flash Activity. It was time to get off the chairs and practice some flashing techniques! - Stoboscopic Flashing and - Rear Curtain Sync - You can read more on how to set up your cameras on David s blog pages With David at the helm and with Mitch navigating the trusty bicycle we had the opportunity to practice some creative techniques using on-camera flash unit. Whilst challenging at first it wasn t long until camera setting were set and flashes were flashing the results were interesting to say the least. What is Stoboscopic Flashing? A Stroboscopic flash refers to a photography technique where a series of flashes are quickly and continuously fired off in a single picture exposure. These continuous flashes create multiple bursts of light that are all captured in your picture. Using this type of flash technique produces a unique effect on your final photographic results. In essence, each multiple light burst from the flashes will 'freeze' your subject for that individual flash. When it comes to moving targets, this technique creates an especially dynamic and creative aesthetic within your photography. This holds especially true when a subject moves across the frame for a longer exposure with a large number of stroboscopic flashes. 4 What is Rear Curtain Sync? Rear curtain sync is an artistic photographic technique which plays with the ideas of both light and motion in your work. Also known as second curtain sync, your flash will fire at the end of your shutter's longer exposure time. This will produce a wonderful effect of motion and a blur behind a subject that appears statically captured in the image. What Is the Difference Between Front & Rear Curtain Sync? While both techniques are often lumped together, there is a distinct difference between a front and a rear curtain sync that you should be aware of for your own work. To better understand how each of these flash syncing techniques work, it s important to recognise how they interact with the rest of your camera setup. Your shutter has two specific curtains that open and allow the camera sensor to be exposed to light. These curtains are the front at the beginning of the exposure and the rear at the end. The time between these curtain openings is what determines your shutter speed. And as you likely already know, altering this setting can create some dramatically different photographic results depending on your subject, environment, and overall setup. Both front and rear curtain sync play an important role with lower shutter speeds because of the effect of motion you're ultimately trying to capture. Slower shutter speeds give you an actual time interval between the openings of both the front and the rear curtain. And this timeframe will allow you to specify precisely when you want your flash to fire. 6 Monthly Outings August Outing: Event Photographic Weekend In Eungella You are welcome to join in for one night, two nights or as along as you like, even if its just a day trip. If you are keen to come along to the Eungella Weekend Away we suggest you book your own accommodation asap: Suggested Camping facilities and cabins are available at: (I believe Mitch and Tracey will be camping here) Other places not too far away: As you can see multiple people can fit share cabins, so don't hesitate in asking another club member if they want to share or contact Mitch if you are in doubt. Once you have booked your accommodation can you let Mitch know where you are staying and what dates. If you are planning a day trip only, please let Mitch know so we can make sure you are kept up to date. If you have any images you would like to show off on the website or our social media pages, please them through to info@creativeshots.com.au. We can also use them in the Newsletter that does not have Images from our internal photo competitions. Exhibition 2016 Near and Far Near and Far. What does this mean to you? Is it an image that is taken in our local region or far away whilst you have been exploring this beautiful world? It could be a conceptual, ie. in the one image you could show distance between subjects, one near, one far. Maybe something as simple as macro or close up photography. Or the beautiful scenes of a landscape image. The topic Near and Far is open to your interpretation. Each year the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens generously allows our club to hold an annual exhibition in the Lagoons Gallery. 9 Competition Schedule In 2016 the competition months will be January, March, May, July, September and November. The Competitions are - Novice - Pure Talent - Enhance It - Portraits - Monochrome - For Art s Sake Each competition night all the above competitions will be run. Each member will be able to enter a maximum of 6 images in total. Each member may enter a maximum of 3 images per category. Images must have been taken within the previous 6 months. Images may be submitted as a print or as a digital file. (As every effort is made to calibrate the computer screen and the projector to get the colours correct, members will need to realise that the digital file may not be of the same quality if their home computer screens are not calibrated. It is at the members' discretion whether they submit a print or digital file.) Images may be up to A4 size, except For Art s Sake which may be any size. Each image entered earns you 1 point towards the annual Club Awards. Plus, Gold = 3 points, Silver = 2 points, Bronze = 1 point. Photo of the Month in each comp earns an extra 1 point. 10 Competition Guidelines Monochrome Black and white, sepia or images containing hues of a single colour such as green made lighter by adding white (tint) or darker by adding black (shade). A4 size Portraits An image of a person/group of people or animal /group of animals that displays expression, personality and mood of the subject. The focus should be the face or the entire body and the background may be included to highlight a relationship with an environment or an object. (Not an image that simply happens to contain people/animals.) A4 size For Arts Sake Fine art is the production of images to fulfill the creative vision of the photographer. It may be produced for sale or display rather than in response to a commercial commission. May include other media and can use any manipulation. Any size. Pure Talent This image is to be a single exposure taken in camera as a jpeg file and may be cropped or straightened only. No cloning, enhancing colours etc. The aim is to encourage the photographer to get the best in camera image possible. Include camera settings on the back ie. ISO, F-stop, TV and any other functions or filters used. A4 size. Enhance It Any post processing allowed. A4 size. Novice For beginners only. No club points awarded. A4 size. 10 P a g e

11 Images Competition Results Want to see your image/s published in our Newsletter? Send your images to within a few days after the judging. Image Size: 500 pixels on the longest side, 72 dpi. Files Name: yourname_imagename_category_award i.e. joeblogs_prettyflower_puretalent_gold Note: by sending your images in for the newsletter, you automatically agree that the club can share your images on the club s website and social media. Don t forget to send in one of your favourite images from a club outing we would all like to see what you captured Photography Competitions We encourage all our members to enter photography competitions it s a great way to get motivated improve your photography.
