To recap, here is how to have your own gallery displayed on our web site: The long side max for photos should be 1500 pixels for landscape and 1024 pixels for portrait. The resolution should be 72 DPI. You can send up to 20 photos, but no less than 10, numbering them in the order you would like them displayed. 2 Page 2 4 Ways to Reduce Red Eye in Photography By Nicholas Donner We have all seen it. In fact, we have probably all seen ourselves with it. Crazy, glowing, red, devilish eyes in a photograph. It only seems to happen when we use the flash on our cameras or cell phone cameras in dark environments. Why does it happen? How can we keep our subjects (and ourselves) from this terrible red eye affliction? Fun Photography Fact The Camera & Imaging Product Association (CIPA) is an organization based in Japan that conducts performance testing on photographic equipment and provides standard measurement results. Why it happens The reason why someone will appear to have red eyes in photography is pure science. This scenario almost always takes place in a very dark environment: at a party or a concert, outside at night, in a restaurant somewhere that isn t benefiting from natural light. The dark environment causes two things. The first is for everyone s eyes to be dilated, meaning the pupils (that black part in the center) are very large so that they can take as much light as possible. This is just like a camera aperture. Wider aperture equals more light. The second is that your camera needs a little help from the flash to accurately capture the subjects in a dark space. When you fire your on camera flash, whether it is from your DSLR or your phone, the light from the flash goes in the very wide pupils of your subjects, reflects off the red connective tissue in the back of their eyes and into the camera lens. So the glowing red eyes are actually just a reflection from the pupils. Red-eye reduction mode Most camera manufacturers, including cell phones, have figured out that red-eye is an issue when the flash is built so close to the lens. To get around this, oftentimes there is a pre-flash that (besides temporarily blinding you) causes pupils to get smaller in response to the bright light. Then the flash fires and reflects off of much smaller pupils than in otherwise would in a dark environment. It s not a perfect solution, but it can take the red glow from marble size to pinpoint size, which goes a long way in making your subjects look less like aliens. 7 Page 7 What is Lens Diffraction? By Rajib Mukherjee Lens diffraction is something that every landscape photographer has to deal with. Whether you re using a top of the line lens or a very cheap one, lens diffraction is undeniably going to impact your images. So, what is lens diffraction? Photographer Steve Perry explains: When a light wave hits an obstacle like the edge of an aperture blade, it starts to disperse. This has the effect of changing the various wavelengths so that they travel different distances and they begin to interfere with each other. When this happens there is a loss of sharpness. This is lens diffraction. The smaller the lens opening, the softer the image becomes. This is probably best understood using the airy disk analogy. Think of an image as being composed of numerous small pinpoints of light. When the aperture is big, the points of light are not diffracted and the projected dots of light are sharp and clean. Fun Photography Fact Photoshop was created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll. Since then, it has become the de facto industry standard in raster graphics editing, such that the terms "photoshopping" and "photoshop contest" were born. As the aperture is stopped down, diffraction sets in and the airy disks begin to blur and merge, meaning your image becomes soft. Though all lenses are prone to the effects of diffraction, lower resolution sensors tend to get affected by diffraction much later. This is because with tiny packed sensors (higher resolution) even a small amount of blurring of the air disks means they overlap. This is why with lower resolution cameras (pixels not closely packed) you can easily use the lens stopped down to another one to two full stops before you experience a similar loss of sharpness. Image sharpness and depth of field are not the same thing. Though smaller f-stops give you a bigger depth of field (more of the frame in focus), actual image sharpness actually decreases.
