I hope you are all taking advantage of indoor shooting places, or if you're outside, be sure and drink plenty of liquids. The interview that Gordon Buck and Amy Monet did with on Todd Ross on 2ne In, on Baton Rouges' Channel 2 T.V., apparently went well. The exhibit at the Greenwell Springs Library was mentioned in the interview. They report a good turnout for the exhibit. So much so, that they have planned to keep mentioning our exhibit in their advertisements for the month of August. Special thanks to Bill Burks for printing labels for all the photos hanging at the library. It went a long way towards giving the exhibit a professional look. There is a good collection of our members work hanging there this year. To all those who weren't able to participate this year, plan to hang some of your work there next year. It's a great chance to show off a little. The balloon festival was a success as far as I have heard. It's a good place to practice your skills, and learn a few new ones. We're all looking forward to seeing some of your photos from there. There are on going opportunities for getting photos in our personal field trips as outlined by Elizabeth Mangham at each meeting. There should be a good collection for the year end showing. Our guest speaker for the month of August will be one of our own members, Clay Coleman. He has extensive experience as an underwater photographer, as well as on land nature photography. If you're interested in either, be sure to attend this months meeting. It is with sadness that I have to report the passing of one of our members. Jim Breeden passed away on July 28th. He was a recent member of L.P.S. and a member of Cajun Clickers Computer Club. On behalf of the Louisiana Photography Society, I would like to extend to his wife and family, our deepest sympathies. He will be missed. Your 2005 president, Claude Nall.

5 LPS Focus Page 5 June 2005 Monthly Competition Guidelines Turtle by Rhonda Mock Formats may be Slides, Digital Projection, Color Prints, Monochrome/B&W Prints, and Digitally Manipulated Prints. Subjects may be Open or Theme. Printing a photo taken with a digital camera, or scanning/printing an image is not digital manipulation, even if slight color/exposure adjustments were made. However, if physical changes were made with software (i.e., removing a branch, turning sun green, adding a sailboat from one image of a lake to another, etc.) then the final image shall be considered manipulated. Hand-tinted B&W prints shall be included in the B&W category. Specific competition(s) will be announced in the newsletter and at the meeting prior to the actual night of competition. Limit 2 entries per person each month. Entries must be signed in by 7:15 pm on the meeting night to qualify for judging. All prints must be matted, and/or mounted, and/or framed. Monthly competition entries will be judged by qualified judges from outside the club who will typically give a verbal critique of the winning images. In the absence of an outside judge, 3 persons in attendance at the meeting will be chosen to act as judges. Images shall be judged on technical merit and artistic impression, and given a score between 1 and 5 by each judge. Ribbons for 1st, 2nd,3rd, 1st Honorable Mention, and 2 nd Honorable Mention will be awarded to the highest scoring images. If an image receives a ribbon, it shall be retired from further LPS competitions. However, it may be included in noncompetitive exhibitions sponsored by the club. At the end of the year, the sum of each person's scores in each format shall be totaled for consideration as LPS Photographer of the Year for the format. A member may enter only 2 images per monthly competition. In order to participate in our monthly competitions, your 2005 dues must be paid.

6 LPS Focus Page 6 June 2005 LPS is a proud member of the Gulf States Camera Club Council GSCCC Competition Bring your entries for the following month to the club meetings. For example, for September competition bring your entry to the August meeting. They will be returned in 3 months. Alternatively, you can send the entries for the current month to Bill and Darelyn Marshall (325 Finchley Ave. Baton Rouge, LA 70806). Entries must be postmarked by the 5th of each month. Places are awarded in each category for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and two honorable mentions. Club points are awarded on member places. Visit the GSCCC website at for more detailed information. GSCCC Competition for September The categories are SMALL PRINTS (4 ONLY PER CLUB, 1 PER ENTERING PHOTOGRAPHER) and PICTORIAL SLIDES. Small prints should be no larger than 100 square inches. There is no minimum size requirement. Small prints may be mounted, but mounting boards must be no larger than 11" X 14". Printing and mounting may be done either commercially or by the maker. Prints may be color or black and white. Please mat your print or mount it on foamboard with your name, LPS, and the title on the back. All slides should be 2" X 2", with glass mounting optional. Slide entries must have a thumbspot in the lower left corner as viewed in the upright position. Titles are required. We have had entries for the GSCCC competition every month for the last 3 months. On August 20 th we will meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Garden Center and car pool to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. There we will view the Rauschenberg exhibit of both paintings and photographs. This is a world class exhibit and we are very fortunate to have this opportunity. If conditions are acceptable, we will stop back by Lake Martin, so bring your cameras. On August 23 rd we have the unique opportunity of going to see and experience Sharon Turner s studio. We meet at 7:00 p.m. at Cedar Park, off Seigan Ln., near Team Honda. Thank you, Sharon for sharing your expertise and studio with us. If you have not signed up for either of these field trips and would like to, there is still room for you. Sign up by ing me at emangham34@yahoo.com. Our individualized field trips for August include the National Balloon Championships near Pennington Research Center on August 3 7. There is a mass ascension at 6 p.m. followed by a balloon glow and fireworks on Friday and Saturday evenings. Also for August individualized shooting we included produce. This is to be sure that everyone has the opportunity to find

8 LPS Focus Page 8 June 2005 something they can shoot. You never know which will turn out to be a prize winner, until you try. When you buy your squash and tomatoes, photograph them and then eat them. We will go to the Myrtles in September. We should get some interesting images there. Will all of you make arrangements for a good sunset on the way back that evening (date TBD)? Be sure to check our galleries on our website to see photos from our field trips.
