1 Black Hills Photography Society January 8, 2008 Meeting was called to order by President Darrell Fish. Old Business: 1. The website has been updated to include the latest minutes and contest themes for the year. The website address is Just a reminder that you can put your own personal photos on the website for the public to see. If you have any questions on the process, Darrell is happy to assist. It will be up to each individual to decide how they want to deal with the copyright issue. 2. Becky reserved the meeting space we currently use through December Jackie Lake s husband is doing well. New Business: 1. February s presenter, subject to change, will be Steve Paige on Portraiture Male/Female gender posing. He will be getting back to Darrell on whether or not he will be available that night. 2. Big Brothers, Big Sisters will be having a Big and Little Photo Contest. The entry deadline is January 14, Darrell ed out a copy of the entry form and contest info to those on the list. You can also pick up a copy at BBBS s office. 3. Betty read an article in one of the current issues of a photography magazine about amateur photography clubs. She said it mentioned that clubs are coming back due to the popularity of digital photography. She will look for the magazine info and pass it on to Darrell. 4. Contest for February is Mechanical Tonight s Speakers were Kathy and Ron Linton from Thru Our Eyes Photography. They brought various photos to share and talked to us about how they got started with photography and their business. Their website is

2 March 11, 2008 The regular meeting of the Black Hills Photographic Society was held March 11, 2008, at 7:00pm in third floor East Meeting Room at the City School Administration Center, 300 Sixth Street. The meeting was called to order by President Darrell Fish, with nine members present. He made the announcement that we now have access to the projector in the meeting room. Discussion was held on adding a new category to the pictures being presented at the meetings Digitally Enhanced Slides. Pictures need to be in jpeg format. The four (4) categories will be: Digital prints Enhanced Prints (printed) film or digital Slides Digitally enhanced slides Maximum of three (3) in any one category; or total of six (6) pictures may be presented. This new change was voted on and passed. Becky will make new ballots for the next meeting. Krista received an from Eric Helgeson stating that he has a camera lens for sale Canon EF 17-40mm f/4l USM in excellent shape. He would like $550 for the lens (new price is $679). Pictures were presented for the contest three prints; four slides. Using the projector will save money by not making prints if one is doing it just for the meeting contest. Darrell presented the program Photo Shop. Photo Shop CS3 is the newest version. Everyone was invited to ask questions on an area they were having problems with, or an interest in. He explained the eraser tool; copy; cloning; and several other areas. Garry suggested something to think about the Society making a My Space web page for the group. It would be a good way to get exposure for the group. Darrell stated that he is currently practicing on My Space. Krista suggested maybe have a link to our web site through a new My Space. Anyone want to volunteer to work on this project? Next meeting will be held April 8, The topic for photos will be Birds.

3 APRIL 8, 2008 April 8, 2008, at 7:00 pm in the third floor East Meeting Room at the City School Administration Center, 300 Sixth Street. The meeting was called to order by President Darrell Fish, with twelve present. Linda sent Darrell a list of camera equipment she has available for sale. If anyone is interested contact Darrell for a copy of the list. Betty has Canon equipment for sale. Karen Hall from the Dakota Choral, ed Darrell asking for permission from members to use the scenery pictures that they had used before, and requesting anything new that the Club members may want to submit. They will be used in observance of EARTH DAY at the South Dakota School of Mines on April 26 th. Darrell reminded and explained how to do digital projection for the entries in the club contests. He asks that you do not the pictures just bring them to the meeting on a CD or jump/flash drive. We had no treasurer s report available. Twelve slides, three enhanced pictures, and nine prints were brought by members to share for the monthly contest. The presentation was given by Steve Page on portraiture. He brought cameras, lights, etc. to the meeting to aid in his demonstrations. He explained how to pose people, and used volunteer members to set up family group pictures. Members felt that with actual people, lights, etc. it was easier to understand how to pose people. Tips were given like men should drop their front shoulder for a masculine pose; women should drop their back shoulder. He volunteered to assist us at another meeting if we wished him to come. The next meeting will be held May 13 th same place, same time. The topic for pictures for the contest will be flowers, and Joe Lowe will be presenting the program.

4 MAY 13, 2008 May 13, 2008, at 7:00 pm in the third floor East Meeting Room at the City School Administration Center, 300 Sixth Street. The meeting was called to order by President Darrell Fish, with six members present, plus presenter for the evening, Joe Lowe. The Dahl Photo competition was discussed. Alyssa Tanner s All Bundled Up was the first place winner in the youth category. She also entered two other pictures which received honorable mentioned placings. Members were told that Betty Bonawitz was having bypass surgery. Everyone wishes her success in her surgery hope to see her at the next month s meeting. She also had a picture in the Dahl contest. We had no treasurer s report available. Five digital pictures, two enhanced pictures, and three prints were brought by members to share for the monthly contest. Krista made laminated numbers for the club for our photo contests. Discussion was held about the Butterfly House thought was given as to the members getting together to go to Sioux Falls to take pictures there. One Saturday and one Monday a month is designated just for photographers. Our presentation for the meeting was given by local photographer, Joe Lowe. Joe gave some very good ideas about his experiences as a photographer. He says there are two requirements 1) creative side of you; and 2) good technical skills. He advises some college training in photography for a good solid foundation. He is a firm believer that schooling really helps. He gave tips on selling your work. First Impression counts when selling prints. You need to develop a port folio, and use a professional approach. He suggested using filters to protect your lenses. Buy good filters don t buy expensive lenses and cheap filters. He says that photography is a very subjective art. It was a very informative presentation. The next meeting will be held June 10th same place, same time. The topic for pictures for the contest will be old buildings.

5 July 08, 2008 July 08, 2008, at 7:00 pm in the third floor East Meeting Room at the City School Administration Center, 300 Sixth Street. The meeting was called to order by President Darrell Fish. The announcement was made that the Central States Fair exhibit books are out. Members were told that Betty Bonawitz was getting better; however, she is still not able to drive. Hope to see her at the next meeting. Karen Hall is still getting our s, and writing her second book; and by the end of the year she hopes to be more active in the club. Entries for the monthly contest were presented Action/Sports was the subject matter. Our presentation for the meeting was given by local photographer, Rick Goeringer accompanied by his wife, Joanann. They live near Deadwood, and their business name is NHEWS. One of the many subjects Rick spoke on was, white balance. He explained to us that light has a temperature. There is an icon that tells the temperature setting on your camera. When you get into trouble with photography it is usually the light. He told us we should do a histogram to do a assist in getting a wonderful white balance. You should fill the frame when you re taking pictures of for a histogram. It is not the camera that makes the picture, it is the operator. Focus is the biggest problem. He encouraged us to teach in order to learn. M manual setting is what Rick uses the most. Also a good tool he suggested for changing backgrounds is the Gaussian Blur. (While trying to decide how to spell it I googled and got and also ) Some Web Sites Rick referred us to are: A web site that has free articles you can read. Also a link on that web site is: You can also subscribe for $20.00 a month to watch videos. Web site for developing pictures: Located in Branson, Missouri. The topic for pictures for the contest will be timed exposures.

6 August 12, 2008 August 12, 2008, at 7:00 pm in the third floor East Meeting Room at the City School Administration Center, 300 Sixth Street. The meeting was called to order by President Darrell Fish with seven members present. Becky Fish brought three pages of handout materials for members review, to be distributed to exhibitors during the Central States Fair. Entries for the monthly contest were presented timed exposures was the subject matter. Anyone interested in a photo contest can pick up entry forms at Ritz Camera in the mall. They also have a good supply of mats if anyone is needing mats for fair exhibits. Mostly basic colors, but also have 8 x 12 openings. Darrell gave a few quick tips on photo shop topics. Then we had a hands-on practice with chromo key. Our presentation for the meeting was given by Jackie with Darrell s assistance. Jackie recently purchased some new photography equipment, including a chromo key green background and stands. Jackie took a picture of Carol and Darrell demonstrated how to remove the green background (and green hair) and replace it with a background of choice. A fun time was had by all. The next meeting will be held September 9th same place, same time. The topic for pictures for the contest will be animals.
