3 Photo Class Details for October 2016 Basic beginning and refresher Photography course. Each subject will be projected with several visual aids incorporated. The entire course is 14 videos with time to do four video subjects. The videos are based on Cannon and Nikon for the most part. There will be a short question and answer session. In the first section on Exposure Modes, John works with his class to make sure they understand concepts of Exposure. I feel this is one of the better segments in the entire series. 9. Exposure Modes 32:59 This includes both the Automatic, Manual, Aperture, Shutter and Program modes. How and when to use each exposure mode will be discussed along with example images of various types. Example image of a Eagle landing how you dial in the right exposure (for speed) Landscape (for depth of field) and Portrait (for combination of speed and depth of field) examples images are shown and how you would dial them in for the most optimum image. 10. Settings and Workflow 17:13 John will detail his ideal camera settings, including file types, and best practices to save time. JPEG vs RAW why use one over the other? Drive modes single release, multiple release, timer and others. Memory Cards formatting and why. White Balance what is it how do you set it? Firm wear updates? This segment is an accumulation of information you need to know but each subject is not enough by itself for a complete video segment. 11. Light 8:43 This is a very, very important subject. There are four characteristics of light to consider when evaluating how it will affect your image. Most important part of photography! 12. Flash 4:00 This is arguably one of the most complicated areas of photography, but John will break it down into a simple, easy to understand way. 3
4 2017 TRAVELING PRINT SHOW IMAGES TO BE SELECTED AT NOVEMBER MEETING Now is the time to be preparing your prints for NWCCC s 2017 Traveling Print Show. Unlike prints submitted to the Puyallup Fair competitions or the NWCCC Individual Open Print Salon, this is a CLUB competition. You may submit up to 4 prints at the November meeting. We will be voting to choose our club s 25 submissions for the 2017 competition, including color and monochrome. (The distinctions between monochrome and color are noted below.) Mount Baker CC s 25 prints will then be judged by other NWCCC clubs during the winter and spring. Print size, including any matting, must be between 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 inches. The same print can be entered in only one of NWCCC s competitions per year. If you entered a print in this year s NWCCC Individual Open Print Competition, you may not enter the same print in this year s Traveling Print Show competition (from another year? great, as long as the print didn t win an award). You cannot enter a print that has WON AN AWARD FROM ANY NWCCC competition. Any prints that were submitted to the Puyallup Fair or other competitions outside NWCCC are fine. Prints must be mounted on firm support (like 4-ply matte board). Please do not use foam core, as the print will not be accepted in many other competitions, including those sponsored by PSA and the Puyallup. It also may limit the number of prints our club can submit as all 25 must fit in the black mailing case we own. Last year it was a very tight squeeze. Place print title, name of club and maker s name on the back upper left hand corner. Do not reuse print titles or give your print a generic title like untitled. Prints are submitted as Monochrome or Color. Monochrome means one color. For example, a black and white print consists of one color (black) on the white paper base. The one color may be black tones, warm (brownish), cold (bluish), sepia or any other color tone. Color may include any and all colors. You are encouraged to go to the Northwest Council s website nwcameraclubs.org to read through all the rules (see competitions). You are also encouraged to develop a strategy to submit your prints to more than one competition. This means not using foam core on the back or matting on the front. After going to all the trouble of having your photograph printed and mounted, submitting it to more than one competition is a great idea! Questions? Contact Jan Irwin at or jan@lj3.com. 4

10 A Note from the President Hi Everyone, At our September meeting I mentioned a goal of greater sharing of images between club members than is possible at our regular club meetings. We only see the photos each member presents at our monthly meetings, and most of us have a far greater collection of images in our files. A number of our members have favorite images listed on various photo media sites, and others have their own personal websites. If you are part of a photo media group, or have your own personal photography website, we would like to list these web addresses in the November newsletter so our club members are aware of them and can log in and enjoy your photography. Please send me an at mhektner@frontier.com letting me know how to access the photo media or photography website that you would like to make available to club members, and the public, through the MBCC Newsletter. Per our club Indemnity Waiver, the club will assume no responsibility in posting your contact information; it is at your own risk. If you have any special concerns about having this access available to everyone, please let me know about that too. Murphy Club Officers: Murphy Hektner, President Dan Bourdeau, V.
