3 Photo Class Details for October 2017 NIK SOFTWARE CLASS BY LEE DYGERT Many times I have heard NIK mentioned in image judging or conversation at MBCC. I thought giving a basic class on how I use the program may be helpful information. NIK Multimedia was founded in 1995, selling their individual plug-ins for 17 years. Google bought NIK Multimedia in The collection was originally priced at $500, but after Google acquired NIK, the price was dropped to $150. On March 24, 2016, Google announced that they would make the NIK Collection free. On May 30, 2017, Google announced they have no plans to update the NIK Collection over time, nor add new features in the future. NIK plug-ins are compatible with both Windows and Mac, but you must also have one of the individual programs of Photoshop, Lightroom or Photoshop Elements. Although not all versions are compatible, I will have a chart showing exactly which versions are OK. NIK is a group of separate plug-ins, all offered by NIK (through Google) and are free to download at: The package of NIK plug-ins includes: Product name Functionality Analog Efex Pro Applies film-era camera, lens, and film simulation to digital images. Color Efex Pro Package of filters that comes with many effects, e.g. HDR effect Dfine Noise reduction HDR Efex Pro Specialized program for processing HDR pictures Sharpener Pro Image sharpening Silver Efex Pro Black & White conversion Viveza Color control with advanced functions to change contrast and saturation In the Photo Class, I will focus on the individual plug-ins I have highlighted, demonstrating how you may use them and how they may benefit your images. 3

4 2018 TRAVELING PRINT SHOW IMAGES TO BE SELECTED AT NOVEMBER MEETING Now is the time to be preparing your prints for NWCCC s 2018 Traveling Print Show. Unlike prints submitted to the Puyallup Fair competitions or the NWCCC Individual Open Print Salon, this is a CLUB competition. You may submit up to 4 prints at the November meeting. We will be voting to choose our club s 25 submissions for the 2017 competition, including color and monochrome. (The distinctions between monochrome and color are noted below.) Mount Baker CC s 25 prints will then be judged by other NWCCC clubs during the winter and spring. Print size, including any matting, must be between 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 inches. The same print can be entered in only one of NWCCC s competitions per year. If you entered a print in this year s NWCCC Individual Open Print Competition, you may not enter the same print in this year s Traveling Print Show competition (from another year? great, as long as the print didn t win an award). You cannot enter a print that has WON AN AWARD FROM ANY NWCCC competition. Any prints that were submitted to the Puyallup Fair or other competitions outside NWCCC are fine. Prints must be mounted on firm support (like 4-ply matte board). Please do not use foam core, as the print will not be accepted in many other competitions, including those sponsored by PSA and the Puyallup. It also may limit the number of prints our club can submit as all 25 must fit in the black mailing case we own. Last year it was a very tight squeeze. Place print title, name of club and maker s name on the back upper left hand corner. Do not reuse print titles or give your print a generic title like untitled. Prints are submitted as Monochrome or Color. Monochrome means one color. For example, a black and white print consists of one color (black) on the white paper base. The one color may be black tones, warm (brownish), cold (bluish), sepia or any other color tone. Color may include any and all colors. You are encouraged to go to the Northwest Council s website nwcameraclubs.org to read through all the rules (see competitions). You are also encouraged to develop a strategy to submit your prints to more than one competition. This means not using foam core on the back or matting on the front. After going to all the trouble of having your photograph printed and mounted, submitting it to more than one competition is a great idea! Questions? Contact Bill Dewey at or retief@deweydrive.com 4

11 A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT, Murphy Greetings friends and club members. We are well into another beautiful fall color season. October is one of my favorite months due to the natural beauty of the season and the many photographic opportunities it provides. The Northwest Council of Camera Clubs Fall Conference is coming up very soon, and you will find full information is in this newsletter. From my own perspective, the abundant print display is a highlight not to be missed. The quality of the prints seems to improve with each passing year. A REMINDER: The Annual Assigned Topic for 2017 is Geometric Shapes. There is still time to photograph your geometric shapes images as the deadline is not until midnight on December 31 st. The other POY topical categories to photograph during 2017 are: Flowers Birds Monochrome and Landscape/Seascape. The assigned topic and other 4 topical categories will be judged and shown at our annual Photos of the Year banquet in March.
