Qld August 2007 Annual General Meeting The following resolutions were put to the members to vote on:- Notice of Motion: That the following Special Resolutions be put to members to vote on at the Annual General Meeting to be held on the 7 August Special Resolution (1) That Cairns Photographic Inc. adopts the model rules, version 6, by the Office of Fair Trading that incorporates the changes to Associations Incorporation Act of 1981 that took effect on the 15 June Notice of Motion:That the Rules for the appointment of Life members be included to read as set out in Special Resolution 2 Special Resolution (2) (a) The Management Committee may nominate a member of the Society for Life Membership for meritorious services to the Society (b) The nomination, with fully documented particulars, shall be placed on the Agenda of the next AGM for election by the members. (c) The number of Life Members shall be limited. Membership Fees: The Management Committee proposed that the fees be amended as follows:- The membership fee for the yearly family membership is to be increased to $40 for a family of two (2); plus $8 for each additional family member. Half yearly membership, from January to June of each year is to be $20 for a family of two (2); plus $4 for each additional family member. The single membership fee is to remain at $30 per year and the half yearly from January to June is to remain $15, but is subject to further change. Both Special Resolutions and the change in Family Membership Fees were moved, seconded and carried. The new Management Committee elected is:- President: Dell Deed Treasurer: Gaye Harding Secretary: Kate Schmidt Competition Secretary: Joan Leach Committee Members: Newsletter Editor: Di Harrison Hans Schmidt Dell Deed The AGM was over in half an hour and Troy Mayne gave his presentation on Self Publishing Your Own Book. Troy has put together a children s book, using real photos that he has taken on the reef. (Put your order in now for this one, it is a great book!). Troy explained the procedure he has gone through to self publish his book and some of the details that he had to look at, in what is required for children s reading. Troy, we wish you success with Sorry Wally and your future books.

2 CPS Newsletter August 2007 Page 2 President s Report There have been quite a few changes to our committee since the last AGM and it doesn t resemble anything like the one elected. When the President resigned at the beginning of the year, I was asked to stand in by the committee until this AGM, a time I have enjoyed. The President elected, Dean Armstrong resigned due to personal reasons, our Vice-President, Fenton Mills had to resign because of ill-health and our Secretary Rachel Whymark also had to resign for personal reasons, one committee member, Judy Davies, although didn t resign, was caught up in family commitments and unable to give time to the committee, as has Ray Gibson, so it has been left to Joan and Stewie Leach and myself for the last couple of months, but hopefully a change is about to take place. This coming six months has 3 great opportunities for you, the photographer. We have the Exhibition at the Art Gallery in November, which is a great honour, our book, to be launched at the Gallery and our competition with Derby City Photographic Club in England. Everyone has the chance to be in this, as everyone has the change to take that great photo, you don t have to be a professional or have the most expensive camera. This committee has worked hard to implement these activities as well as our monthly meetings, monthly outings and club competition for the club as well. We have had some great help also from some members and if I try to name you, I will fail and I don t want to offend anyone, so thank you to those who have offered their help and assistance, it has been greatly appreciated. Finally, as always, it is thank you to you the members, as it has always been said - without the members, there is no club - but I also think that - without a committee there is no club either. So when you join a club, any club, nothing will happen unless you have a committee to implement the club activities. Black & White Tip Black and white photographs can be just as beautiful and striking as colour and to make that dynamic photo, that everyone would like to achieve, you must see the shapes, lines and tones that make-up a black and white photograph. If you are photographing a building, walk around it and look for strong shadows that will add to the dimension of what you are looking at, whether it is all of the building or just part of it. Sometimes shadows will add a repetition of shapes that will give you that great shot. Thank you must go to Joan and Stewie Leach, especially to Joan s amazing skills for organisation and Joan, like me, is a now person, so if you want something done and done well, Joan will have it done now, not later. Thank you to Stewie for his amazing skills too, for all of the odd jobs that he does for the club that saves money

3 CPS Newsletter August 2007 Page 3 Cairns Regional Gallery Time is going by so quickly, and such a lot to be organised for our Exhibition. Thankfully though, several members at our August meeting volunteered to take on some of the tasks that have to be done. Photos are now being judged for selection and if you entered any, you will be notified as soon as we have the results. As said previously, the Gallery has some frames and matting that we will be able to use, so if you are successful the list will be sent to you, but will require an immediate answer, as it will be first in, first served. If you wish to sell your photos through the Gallery, there will be a 33 1/3% commission, so you will need to know how much you want to get for your photo. The prints will be sold without frames and the Gallery will flat pack them. If you wish to sell privately, the Gallery will hand out cards to interested buyers. If some of your works are suitable to make into postcards or bookmarks, at your cost, the Gallery will also be happy to put them in their shop to sell. Photos that are to be framed by the Gallery MUST be in by the 22 October, if you are framing your own then they are to be in on the 5 November. CRG will take care of insurance as soon as items are on their premises. Roy Jaques, from the Camera Museum in Herberton, will have some old cameras for display as well as a pin-hole camera and photo taken with it. If you have any queries, please contact me, delld1@bigpond.com, Our Book Photos MUST be in at the September meeting, there will definitely be NO LATE ENTRIES accepted. Photos will be given to the judges on that night for selection, so no favours can be given. Photos are to be 5x7 and taken within the Cairns Electoral boundaries, which are Ellis Beach to the north, Whoopen Creek to the south and to the Kennedy Highway at Smithfield. The title of the book is Our Backyard - Cairns so bring your very best shots showing the lifestyle, culture and geographic location, that will, in turn, show that Cairns has the best backyard in Australia. It was hoped that we could launch the book at our Exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery in November, but due to unforseen circumstances. that may not happen. The RADF Committee has kindly given us an extension of one month in case we need it but every endeavour will be made to avoid taking advantage of that extension. The question has been raised about the boundaries with the forthcoming Local Council amalgamations but the boundaries for the book remain as stated. Our Web-Site Our web-site is in the process of being re-vamped. Michael Critchley kindly put his hand up at the AGM to work on it. We hope to have a members gallery this time. Will advise when it is finished. Palm Cove Competition Thank you to those who entered the Palm Cove competition. The prizes were collected this week and will be handed out at the next meeting.

4 CPS Newsletter August 2007 Page 4 New Members Welcome to new members, David Summers. Michael Critchley and Terry Power, we hope you enjoy being part of the CPS family. Outings August outing is to the Mareeba Airshow on Sunday the 19th. The show starts at 11am, the meeting time is 9am at the gates. Total Lunar Eclipse A total eclipse of the Moon will be visible in Eastern Australia on Wednesday, 29th August. There is a very good article available on how to photograph the lunar eclipse, on the New York Institute of Photography website: then click on read more. While you are on their site, check it out, as there is also an article on Black & White and as our outing in September is to be B&W, you could get some great clues from it. There is another website: id=55,409,0,0,1,0#when That will give you more details on the eclipse. September 16th is to Innisfail for a black & white shoot (if you haven t got that option on your camera, or able to convert to B&W, please come along anyway and shoot in colour). There will be a hunt and shoot on the day as well, with a small prize for the one who photographs all of the items on the list. To get the best lighting for the river shots we need to meet early, it was suggested the time be 6am, but was not decided on, so at the September meeting this will be discussed. The meeting place will be at the Revivor Centre at the turn off to Millaa Millaa Morning tea will be at the Warrina Lakes and it has been organised that we visit the Violets and Lace Nursery on Croquette Point Road to photograph the lovely old home there as well as plants etc. Supporters of Cairns Photographic Society Inc Battery World 297 Mulgrave Road Cairns Ph Join us at our monthly meetings, February to November, on the first Tuesday of the month, Cominos House, 27 Greenslopes St., Edge Hill from 7.00pm. 5 CPS Newsletter August 2007 Page 5 Cairns Show Congratulations to Caroline Beecham who took out Champion of Show with the highest points awarded. (I m sorry for this terrible photo because they just looked great) This marvellous donation by these people has given the Club the extra money needed to have our book printed and we can never thank them enough. It goes without saying, Joan and Stewie Leach did a great job as Chief Stewards of the Show and had everything running smoothly, so a special thank you to them. And to Jeanette McInnes for Champion Monochrome Print To the volunteers who came along to put the photos up and then help during show time, especially in selling the raffle tickets, a big thank you too. Joan and myself did manage time to have a look around the Show and take some photos. Entry numbers were down this year but all in all a successful show with our members taking out major prizes and our great successful raffle. A huge thank you to Frank Harrison, Steven Nowakowski and Kerry Trapnell who donated great photos for the raffle, to Lee Middleton of High Scan who printed them on canvas and Mark Surman of The Picture Framer who framed them for us. Joan really wanted her photo taken with the dog with sunglasses on, but the other dog wasn t going to let that happen and jumped up in between them just as the photo was taken. They were very happy, well trained dogs and enjoyed all of the attention they were receiving.

6 CPS Newsletter August 2007 Page 6 Club Competition Rules Entry fee of $1 per member for up to three (3) photos. All photos must have been taken within the last twelve (12) months. Photos entered in the 2007/8 competition MUST NOT have been exhibited during the year 2006/7 and financial members only are eligible to enter. Up to three photos per member can be submitted, the size is 5 x 7 or 5 x 8 - no smaller and no larger, not matted, and also no white Your name must be on a separate piece of paper and attached to the back of the photo (post-it-note) NOT written on the photo. Unidentified photos will not be entitled to judging Please take note of these rules as the judges will disqualify photos that do not comply with them Junior Division Photos can be any subject and the size is 6x4. Entry is 50c for up to 3 photos. Name and information to be attached to back of photo s. No competition in August due to the AGM and Cairns Regional Gallery discussion but for our new members the rules for our competition are above. All new members are in Division Two to start with, but at the Competition Secretary s discretion, can be changed to Division One. Next Months Competition The subject for September s competition was to be Black and White, but members voted to swap it with November s subject, Candlelight and so Black and White is now the November subject This is because our September outing is a black & white shoot in Innisfail and so you may get some great shots for the competition. A list of guest speakers and outings is also on the calendar of events that take you up to June next year. Please note though, they are subject to change and a couple of the weekend outings will be discussed at our September meeting. If you have any suggestions at all. please put them in the suggestion box that is always at the meeting and be assured that the committee does read them and will implement them where possible. The subjects for the rest of year are listed on the back page, and the committee has tried to organise a couple of outings to coincide with the subjects.
