Project of Passion (POP) 2018 There is an opportunity to meet up to six times (once a month) with a mentor and to work on a project of your choice with a mentor. This is often a good way for developing photographers to hone a particular skill or develop a body of work on a concept. At the end of the time each member of POP usually makes a presentation to the whole group. It may start in March and Finish in August for example. We also need a member of the committee to organise POP if it is to go ahead. Before we organise a mentor we need you to make a firm commitment in an to ann.wharton@oz .com.au so that we can gauge possible numbers whether or not to go ahead with it. Welcome Dinner 2018 Sports Club Springwood We currently have 25 people attending the dinner which will be a social start to the year and chance to welcome any new members. Some members of the challenge group of advanced photographers will present their body of work and we will hopefully have someone to provide feedback to each person. So... there will be food, photographs and conversation. If you would like to attend and haven t yet put your name down please contact Margaret Taylor margaretandgeoff@bigpond.com as we will have to confirm numbers soon. 3
4 Reminder: Mat Sizes for Exhibition Nights Mat sizes need to be a consistent size to fit on the stands without covering other images and also need to fit withing the requirements for eg the Inter-club competition or other official FCC competitions. The following is information from the club policy which is also on the web The print must have the member s name, title and indication of correct viewing position. Prints preferably to be (cardboard only) mounted. Mount size of 16 x 20 (407x509 mm) maximum NO FRAMES ACCEPTED. Critique Night with Len Metcalf 12th February First Meeting Monday 12 February - Critique Evening with Len Metcalf This is a different style of meeting. We have engaged Len to work with us for an extended session. We will start at 5.30 for those who can come early. We will have a short dinner break for Len about 7.00 before working through until Each member is asked to bring along 5 prints to share with Len and the group. However, we will only critique 2 of the images. Len suggests its far easier and more useful to have a range of images to refer to. You are all invited for the whole evening or to choose a period of time that suits you. For it to be successful we want a group of members participating with Len in the critique for each set of images. There are no limits. Closer to the date, I will send out a rough idea of the times that your images will be critiqued. Thanks for the following members who indicated that they can come to the early start. If your name isn t here, but you can make the early session, please let me know. Shirley Ann Wharton, Karen Coleman, Ann Dent, Margaret Taylor. First two Outings for the year Wednesday 7th February Cockatoo Island, architecture Saturday 10th Furber Steps Katoomba, landscape March 2018 Theme: Cloudscapes (No theme February as we have a critique) Generally defined as a picturesque formation of clouds. It can be a work of art representing a view of clouds: an impressionist image that is a vast cloudscape of buoyant, floating forms. Clouds are versatile photographic subjects. They can completely change the mood of the landscape. Springtime clouds (the light and airy ones) make us think of warm days, breezes and wildflowers while big, heavy thunder clouds make us think of danger. Heavy clouds can be ominous, moody, and dramatic. The months of December and January should provide some great subject matter for this theme and your image can be abstract or anything with the clouds as the most prominent feature. Ideas... Shoot more of the sky than you need and crop in later if necessary. Slightly underexpose the image if shooting during the day. Try Long exposure times or unusual filters or add extreme color. Give them movement. Add motion or radial blurs to simulate movement. Warp them. Given that clouds have no predefined shape you can use tools in Photoshop such as liquefy to mold them to your desired shape. 4
