We had our first committee meeting after the AGM last week and this was a planning/ handover meeting for our new committee members.

Last month we held an exhibition at the newly upgraded Narellan Town Centre and I must say it was a great success for our club and well done to all members who participated and assisted with the

We are heading towards the tail end of the year, and it has been a busy year for the club so far. We had our first committee meeting after the AGM last week and this was a planning/ handover meeting for our new committee members. The new members are Vice President - Eddie Lim, Secretary - Evie Messer and Treasurer - Marcel Diebold. I thank and welcome them to the committee. Last month we held an exhibition at the newly upgraded Narellan Town Centre and I must say it was a great success for our club and well done to all members who participated and assisted with the exhibition. We received so much positive feedback and have also picked up a few new members. Some of our members were successful in selling their images and this Wednesday the 13th September at 1:30pm there will be an interview about MPS on Radio Station MCR who also found out about us at the exhibition. Upcoming club events will be a presentation night on Wednesday 27th September of some of the magnificient images entered in this years Sydney International Photo Competition. We have our end of year Top Shot competition coming up in early December so time to start preparing your entries as they will need to be handed to Robert our Competition Secretary by Wednesday 25th November. In October we also have a special offsite workshop night for all members which will entail multiple activities at a nearby unique studio, more details to come soon. Please remember to pay your club membership ASAP if you have not already done so as entry to Competition nights, presentation nights and workshops are only open to financial club members. Anyway enough for me, time to get out and enjoy Spring as the warmer weather is on the way. A great month for colourful photography. This was our first day in the Capital City, Windhoek and we were taking some tourist shots of a church and a war memorial in the centre of the city. The building behind the war memorial had some interesting patterns which prompted me to experiment with some multiple exposures. From memory I think it was three shots, all processed in camera. Minor adjustments in Lightroom in terms of contrast, clarity, vibrance and saturation. This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark IV f2./8 lens at iso 200, f9, 1/4 shutter speed, hand held. Tony. 3 Presentation Night August The August presentation night had Chris Malikoff give us a very informative and inspirational talk and demonstration on mobile phone photography and processing. Chris spoke of all of the different apps that can go onto your smartphone for image editing. He also showed us the different camera apps for your phone so that you can take RAW images on your smartphone. He also demonstrated the lens attachments that can go onto the phone camera. He also had on display (see below) images that were taken and edited on his smartphone. Chris is a former member of the MPS and former Macarthur resident. He is always well received whenever he comes for a presentation. He is very inspirational in the field of photography. Page 3 September 2017

4 September Competition Night The September competition night will be held on Wednesday 13th September. Our guest judge for the night will be a previous guest judge in David Miller. David was an accredited photographer for the Paralympic in Sydney 2000 and the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in He photographs motor racing, pole vaulting, long jump, running, cycling, fencing, wood chopping, kayaking, street photography and photojournalism which all require quite different techniques. More recently he has taken to photographing the human body. His fine art nude has been exhibited overseas with many successes in The Austrian Super Circuit, 5 gold medals and a bronze to date. Competition Entry Rules *Only current members can submit images. There are 4 categories - Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints, Digitally Projected Images and Theme images. Members can submit a maximum of 2 images in each of the categories and no more than 5 over the four categories. *For themed images, we will ask you to provide your interpretation of a specific theme. *There is a fee of $1 per print to be provided to the Competition Secretary (Robert) on the night. Entries in the monochrome and colour categories: *Rectangular images must not exceed 41cm x 51cm (16 x 20 ) including any mount or border *Square images must not exceed 46cm x 46cm (18 x 18 ) including any mount or border. Digitally projected images shall have: *Maximum dimensions of 1900 pixels (wide) x 1080 pixels (high) with a suggested resolution of 72dpi, and the image (and file name) saved as a greyscale JPEG or RGB JPEG file with a maximum file size of 2.0 MB *The cut-off time to bring your images is 7:35pm on the night. If you are unable to get your images submitted by 7:35pm, you will need to enter them in the next competition instead. There will be no exceptions to this rule. *The title and author s name should be recorded on its reverse side. *Printed entries need to be mounted and/or over-matted. If mounted, it must be on cardboard or foam core only. Framed prints will not be accepted. *For digitally projected images, you must submit them to the Competition Secretary on the Sunday night before. They should be submitted by (preferred), or on a USB or compact disc. If submitted by USB or disc, it should be submitted to Robert at the meeting on the 4th Wednesday of the month. 5 Photographic Exhibition Our photography exhibition ran from Friday the 4th of August through to Sunday the 13th August. It was a very successful exhibit, with plenty of interest from local people at the shopping centre. Many people did not know that we existed and were very pleasantly surprised at our existence and our creative work in the region. More exhibits are tentatively planned, but maybe a tweaking of the length and presentation will have to be talked about. We have had some local interest, in that people have come along to our meetings since the exhibit. Hopefully this will extend to new members. Page 5 September 2017

So a brief explanation on street photography may be warranted, although, maybe a bit late for the challenge. Henri Cartier-Bresson Considered the father of street photography. He was claimed to have coined the phrase The Decisive Moment. Some of his quotes. *To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. *Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. *The photograph itself doesn't interest me. I want only to capture a minute part of reality. *It is seldom indeed that a composition which was poor when the picture was taken can be improved by reshaping it in the dark room. *Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst *Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. You can see some of Cartier-Bresson s work here Street photography, to me is, Candid Photography. It is the taking of the image of a street scene without the subjects of the photo aware or ready for that photo. Some people feel a street photo is one that must have people in it. It should be shot in black and white. It should be caught with a Leica film camera, etc. So, as you see people can have definite views on street photography. To me it is candid and captures the culture of that street. That is all. No rules about camera type, film or digital, black and white or colour, people or no people. Page 6 September 2017
