Cable Release Macarthur Photographic Society, INC August 2017 Issue 286 From the Presidents Desk President Brett Atkins Well here I am writing this month's report from the NSW coastline of scenic Kiama with 12 of our MPS members just finishing dinner. We are down here on an MPS Photographic weekend away all staying at one of our MPS members Jeff's holiday house having a great time and taking some fantastic images. Thank you Jeff for your hospitality and guided tours around Kiama. I would like to thank our MPS members for voting me in as president for another term and welcome our new committee to take MPS forward for another year. I am also very honoured and at the same time excited that we have our MPS Photographic exhibition on display in conjunction with the opening of the new Narellan Town Centre for the next 10 days. I am very proud of our members works and so far have had nothing but excellent feedback on the exhibition. Make sure you get down to see the display. Coming up this month we have another workshop with Kylie Lyons which are very informative and lots of fun, we also have Chris Malikoff coming back to present on mobile photography and processing on the run. Another action packed month of MPS to look forward to and also another exciting year of activities, stay tuned. Regards Brett Atkins Editor s Notes When life gets blurry, adjust your focus. 7 Photographic Exhibition Currently running at the Narellan Town Centre is our, MPS Photographic Exhibition. It started on Friday 4th August. It goes over 10 days until Sunday 13th August. The interest from the general public has been fantastic. Our images have impressed everyone. We have met numerous possible new members, and also people keen to come along to our meetings to see what happens. The position we have could not be better. The through traffic right in the middle of the new shopping centre has been phenomenal. The Premier of NSW, Gladys Berejiklian opened the new shopping centre. She then made a quick bee line to our exhibition to inspect the exhibit and meet us and shake hands with our Competition Secretary, Robert. Page 7 August 2017
August Member Profile The August member profile is Bruce Wallace. Due to people still finalising their member profiles, I do not have a participant. So I will step up and put forward myself as the Member Profile. I started photographing in the 1960s, when I was given a Brownie Box by my parents. Shown here is my Brownie Flash 11. I did not take photography seriously at all in those days, just family photos. Here is one of mine with my brother and friends whilst we were out camping, probably around My interest in photography waned through my late teens and I left my Brownie Box at home when I flew the nest for the Big Smoke. Then in my early twenties I became interested in photography again. So I went out and bought a Polaroid Land Camera. This camera was great because I had an image within minutes of taking the photo, similar to the current digital days. Opposite is one of my Polaroid prints. Taken in The original colours had faded, so when I scanned the original I revamped the colours in Photoshop. But it has stood the distance of time fairly well considering it was not kept in an ideal situation for most of it s 40+ years. My interest soon increased with the photographic world. I felt the Polaroid did not meet my expectations. So I consulted a friend, who was heavily into photography, about where I can go in this wondrous world of photography. He diagnosed my problem very quickly and said, You need an SLR. A what, I said. He showed me his Pentax Spotmatic and his Kodachrome slides that he regularly took. So in 1976 I went out and bought an SLR. A Pentax KM. A completely mechanical camera, all manual controls, with a small button battery for the light meter. I knew nothing about f stops, shutter speed and ASA (now ISO). I was very keen to learn, so it was a pleasure to learn how to use my camera. Above is one of my images from A colour print taken on Kodacolor. I read photographic magazines voraciously, particularly Australian Photography. And I was soon up to speed on the use of my camera. Page 8 August 2017
August Member Profile My interest in a genre of photography was not there. I was an all rounder. Some landscapes, family and whatever was there to photograph. I had my own darkroom at home and mainly made Cibachrome prints from my colour Kodachrome slides. I also did a little bit of black and white printing, but mainly colour. I knew about the MPS in the early 80s, but did not join, I was a gunna join. This went on until 2012 when I finally joined the MPS, 30 years later. But things changed in the late 80s when I became fascinated with Australian Native plants. I joined the Australian Plants Society in the early 90s and I was photographing all things Australian native. Above is two of my favourite native plant images. Although it was not until the digital age before I bought a Macro lens. I now enjoy wandering around the city photographing whatever I see of interest. Some street photography, and getting out of town to photograph our rural environs. I use a Pentax K5. So I am still a bit of an all rounder. I enjoy printing my own prints, and in particular monochrome prints. So I have an Epson R3000 printer that prints a very good monochrome image. Page 9 August 2017
Photography Tips, Reviews and News Bruce Wallace Newsletter Editor The Golden Hour (From Wikipedia) In photography, the golden hour is a period shortly after sunrise or before sunset during which daylight is redder and softer than when the Sun is higher in the sky. When the sun is near the horizon, sunlight travels through a greater depth of atmosphere, reducing the intensity of the direct light, so that more of the illumination comes from indirect light from the sky (Thomas 1973, 9 13), reducing the lighting ratio. More blue light is scattered, so if the sun is present, its light appears more reddish. In addition, the sun's small angle with the horizon produces longer shadows. Image taken just after sunrise, Gulgong, NSW. Taken at 06.59am 17/05/2017. Sunrise in Gulgong that day was 06.45am. So image taken 14 minutes after sunrise. Wikipedia contd. The term "hour" is used figuratively; the effect has no clearly defined duration and varies according to season and latitude. The character of the lighting is determined by the sun's altitude, and the time for the sun to move from the horizon to a specified altitude depends on a location's latitude and the time of year (Bermingham 2003, 214). In Los Angeles, California, at an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset, the sun has an altitude of about For a location closer to the equator, the same altitude is reached in less than an hour, and for a location farther from the equator, the altitude is reached in more than one hour. For a location sufficiently far from the equator, the sun may not reach an altitude of 10, and the golden hour lasts for the entire day in certain seasons. Image taken just before sunset, Butterworth, Malaysia. Taken at 7.24pm 15/04/2014. Sunset in Butterworth that day was 7.26pm. So image taken 2 minutes before sunset. Tips, reviews and news continued over. Page 10 August 2017
Photography Tips, Reviews and News Image taken just after sunrise at Austinmer Beach, NSW. Taken at 07.02am, 25/05/2014. Sunrise that day was at 06.49am. So image taken 13 minutes after sunrise. So as you can see it is a great time to get out at sunrise, or sunset and get some very warm, atmospheric images with the sun low in the sky.
