1 Publication No 34 - November 2009 President s Column Hello Everyone, Unfortunately our October Speaker, Ron Willems was unable to attend our planned Club activities. Ron sustained severe injuries whilst on route to the Redlands from APSCON 2009 in Adelaide. We had to cancel his weekend workshop and our evening presentation. I am advised that Ron is now on the mend and is hoping to do the Redlands visit in the future. Our best wishes go to Ron and family for a speedy recovery from his injuries. We have various news items in the body of the newsletter, so I will move onto other things. A hearty welcome to members who have joined us recently. One of the issues for a new camera club member is the environment within which our club members work. We invite you to become involved and enjoy the fellowship and social elements of our club, and I ask everyone to get involved and meet fellow members. We are seen as a progressive friendly club, and, in this busy world, your Club can be a great social outlet. There is a wealth of experience and knowledge across our membership, so please take advantage of this knowledge base. Utilise your Contact Person as much as possible. Our Contact People have volunteered to help new members and introduce them into the Club s workings. The Club has an excellent web site and it needs to be visited interactively by members to make it an excellent resource base. Once financial, you will be given a user name and a password to allow access into the Members Forum area. It is there for your use, and we encourage your participation. The Forum has certain behavioural rules which must be met by members. Please familiarize yourself with the Forum s rules so that everyone enjoys their visit to the site. On the site we have relevant documentation such the Member s Handbook which has the Club s Charter, Aims and mission, and various Rules for, and the definitions/explanations for the Monthly Competitions, and our annual exhibition/salon. In the monthly competitions, members need to become familiar with the competition s definitions, visual presentation and artistic merit. Firstly, the monthly competition is devised to challenge members to interpret the subject s definitions, and then submit images which meet the subject s definition rules. Our judges are given a description of the competition s definition and competently judge and stay very closely within the definition s guidelines. The Standard definitions can be drawn from various world peak photographic associations. The FIAP (international body), PSA (Photographic Society of America) and APS (Australian Photographic Society). To add the extra challenge, the Club s Competition Committee can develop its own definition for a specific competition. 1 P a g e

2 The second step in the monthly competition is to become familiar with the physical requirements, eg image size minimum to maximum (metric), mounting (print backing mat) size and mounting materials. The digital entries are sized in pixels. Landscape maximum 1024 width x maximum 768 height. Portrait less than 768 width x maximum 768 height. This simple (?) statement requires knowledge of your post processing software and can be a source of frustration. Also the colour fidelity of the digital or printed image is subject to the colour gamut used in the camera usually srgb, Monitor usually srgb, and the club s LCD Projector srgb, home printers CYM (?), commercial labs Adobe RGB (?). The setting up for competition needs an understanding of how well all of your elements come together to achieve technical quality. So, we now know what to photograph, what cropping we can do in camera, post processing in the home computer, and what the finished image has to physically fit within. Thirdly, encompassing all this planning, organizing and implementing, we need to make the image meet the highest possible artistic standard and have a WOW factor. See, the monthly competition is what? Easy, Tough, Time consuming? Given all these factors, a new camera club member will have some issues with our activities. Please put aside some time to meet and greet new members. We were all newbies once, or twice - with the film to digital transition. Taken all round, I see the monthly competitions as the training ground for inexperienced and eager workers. When our members develop their total skill base, then entry into interclub competitions and national competitions is made just that bit easier. Well, cheers for now Len Maloney President A Note from our Program Director Members will be aware of the necessity to and reason for cancellation of the Ron Willems workshop and Club Presentation. It is pleasing to confirm that Ron is now out of Intensive Care and is making a steady recovery. It is hoped that he may be able to visit us in The committee is meeting on November 9th and work is underway in arranging our 2010 Program. Thank you to those members who have provided suggestions and requests. Victoria Point Community Bank have indicated that they are happy to again sponsor a Master Series of Presentations and a Schools competition is now drawing to a close. It has been a most exciting and successful year with steady membership growth but more importantly, our best program of quality Presenters since our establishment. Funds raised to support Youth in the Redlands and Western Queensland were also at a record level of $4000. I would like to express my sincere thanks to those many members who have assisted me over the year. It is very much appreciated. Coming Events Nov 2nd Judging of our club competition Topic: Music. 6 Competition Entries In response to a query, members are advised that an image which has been awarded an Acceptance in a National competition can be entered into any other competition be it Club or National. It is, however, not permitted (as stated on the entry form) to re-enter that image into the same section of the National in which it gained an acceptance. Portrait Workshop This event was fully booked and Victoria Purdie had put in a lot of work to give those attending a Powerpoint Presentation followed by a demonstration of setting up a set of studio lights. Members were then able to practise on taking shots. Handouts were available. Sincere thanks to Victoria for her very Professional Presentation.
